So I received a free copy of HL2 from a friend and i started to download the copy from Steam to my desktop pc. I want to play it on my laptop but my wirless router for the laptop still has not arrived so the laptop as no Internet connection. So i was wondering will i be able to play HL2 from steam on my laptop, eventhough the game is already downloaded to my PC? Will steam let me re-download the game to my laptop or will i only be able to play HL2 on my PC?

    Thx for ur time

manzi, instead of downloading the entire thing again on the laptop, i suggest u transfer the valve folder in the laptop's c:\program files, and run steam directly from that folder...and yes, u can re-download games from steam n no of times :)

As far as I know, you can dl it to your laptop. My original copy of HL2 is on my desktop. I think that's one of Steam's selling points. You can use/load them to whatever machine you are using. They are attached to your account as opposed to a particular machine. Just make sure no one uses your account on the desktop at the same time you arte usining it on your laptop. I'm sure that's a no-no.

The problem with Steam is that even if the game is installed on your laptop, it will still require an active internet connexion in order to "authentify" the game each time you want to play it. Wich is one of the reason why I deeply hate steam...

No, it can be played offline. It does require online activation *the first time* you launch it. After that, it will nag you, but it doesn't *require* online connection.

I was never able to play HalfLife2 offline... each time I launch the game while offline steam bugs me that it cannot connect and force-close everything

I didn't say it was easy, just that it was possible. I only realized after someone told me it could be done. But if you look (carefully), there is an offline mode.

Actually, all you have to do is save your account info (username and password) and if you run steam with no internet connection it'll tell you that no connection was found and give you 2 choices "Retry" and "Start in Offline Mode." You can play all single player games without any trouble. Very easy too. (There's also an offline mode in the File menu inside Steam).
