    ATI 3650 WITH 256MB

    and

NVIDIA GeForce GT 230M (NB10P GE) graphics
Features 1GB dedicated video memory and up to 2815MB total available video memory for rich detail.

I have the former and it plays L4D at around 60fps. I'm hoping the latter will play the new version and some others at a reasonable rate.

    Thoughts?

However , you can easily get a much better notebook for the same price with maybe a GTX260M which would own both.. what notebook are u looking to buy and what price is it?

GPU memory doesn't have that big an impact on performance. I would bet that a 256MB GT 230M would perform almost as good as a 512MB version, which would be pretty much perform the same as the 1GB you have. This is of course comparing with the same type of GPU memory.

The most important thing is GPU memory type. A 256MB GDDR3 GT 230M would beat a 1GB DDR2 GT 230M hands down. The 2815MB is also useless since it won't ever be utilized (system memory that can be accessed for GPU purposes).

That being said, I doubt you will get much more performance as they are both still 128-bit (mainstream) cards. If you want a gaming notebook consider a 256-bit card such as the GTX 260M or the HD 4850.

Depending on what you're doing with the laptop, the Asus G51/71 would be a much better choice for gaming (GT 260m).

However , there's also a ASUS G51J with Core i7 , GTX260M, full HD screen and 2 hard drives from $1499.. try that.. it would be an excellent gaming rigg..
