Well, I got out of school about two weeks ago, and I'm home for summer break, which lasts until the end of August. I need a new RPG or RPG/action to play. I would get Mass Effect, but I'm not really into Sci-Fi games and I'm not into shooter games either (I dislike them to be exact).
I'm looking for something similar to Diablo 2 (with lots of possibilities in game play) or Fable (with a great storyline); maybe even something like GTA San Andres.

    RPGs I've played:

    Diablo
    Diablo II
    Fable: The Lost Chapters
    Baldurs Gate
Bioshock (I know it's not really RPG...)
    World of Warcraft
    Guild Wars
    Morrowind
    Oblivion
    Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Series
    Final Fantasy Series
    Grand Theft Auto Series
And some old school RPGs, can't remember off of the top of my head.

    What would you recommend?

You can get Titan Quest for cheap now-days. Very Diablo-esque.

Check out a game called The Witcher. It's good and has a great story with lots of openendedness if that's a word.

Age of Conan is one of the best RPGs out (technically it's a MMORPG, but it's still a RPG).

"I'm looking for something similar to Diablo 2 (with lots of possibilities in game play) or Fable (with a great storyline)"

You'll get both with AoC. There's even a questline that determines your destiny.

gonna second conan... maybe find a friend who has it and see it in action...
not for the faint of heart or the "stat crunchers" but the best MMO I have played in the early stages period.

If you don't have Oblivion, it's a game you should own just for the sake of owning.

I didn't like the main quest, but the side quests and freedom were fun.

And I don't recommend jumping into Conan until the dust settles. There are highly mixed reviews at the moment. Sounds to me like they pulled a SOE subscribable beta. ;] *cough* vanguard *cough*

I've played Oblivion. Didn't like it too much - there were too many things to do, which, to me, seems to make the game itself lack in structure.

The Witcher, or Titan Quest if you want a Diablo clone . but the former is better story-wise.

If you want something good, relatively easy and engaging, try Dungeon Siege 2 & Broken world...

First off, my only suggestion to you (and the only suggestion you need ;)) is the Baldur's Gate Trilogy: Baldur's Gate 1 + Tales of the Sword Coast Expansion Pack, Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn, Baldur's Gate: Throne of Bhaal. I basically replay this series twice every five years. Do not read up on anything before you play this, except maybe a class guide to help you pick.

Second, Splinter Cell series is not an RPG :).

Is Bioshock considered an RPG? *scratching head* I always thought of it as an FPS...

Dungeon Siege and its sequel are very Diablo-esque...go a little further back, and you have Nox although it needed a little more polish...and Titan Quest has already been mentioned...

As far as more traditional RPGs, I agree with the Baldur's Gate recommendations...and if you want something a bit shorter and slightly more action oriented, the Icewind Dale series uses the same engine but caters to the ADD crowd...Neverwinter Nights and its sequel wasn't too bad either...

Too bad you don't enjoy sci-fi trappings because my all time favorite RPG is still Fallout...

Go a bit further back and there are the Realms of Arkania series, Ultima VII, Wizardry, and Might and Magic series if you like humor mixed in with your RPG...but you have to be able to tolerate graphics that will be pixelicious...

Played almost all Final Fantasy games when I was a little kid. Also played all the Baldur Gate games. I never got a chance to try Never Winter Night 1 or 2. Should I get NWN or Witcher?

both are pretty good games and very different too. NWN is played fro a bird's eye view and you have usually a squad of characters you can control, very similiar to Dungeon Siege. while in Witcher you can only play as Geralt and it's a third person over shoulder view (you can change it to bird's eye view but i found that very annoying. in short, Witcher is more like an action RPG and NWN asks for more squad management skills.

Titan's Quest and Icewind Dale II are very good action RPG's.

If you can overlook a total lack of graphics (== pure ASCII) and have some patience and time to learn it's keyboard dependant gameplay, a roguelike game like the Ancient Domains of Mystery (ADOM) would be unusual, but good choice. You would be surprised how much more possibilities and depth it has than Diablo, which is btw based on roguelike games. Atleast for me the almost infinite amount of possibilities, randomness and challenge easily overcomes the lack of graphics. :)

    Mass Effect - great game!

    @Age of wind:
As far as I've seen in the gametrailers.com videos, the only thing that's changed in the PC version is the "tactical what-ever-the-hell" where you press space, the game freezes, and you issue commands to your team.

Maybe because the Op said he didn't want to play ME because it is science fiction. ;)

To the Op: Another really good title I haven't seen mentioned is Arcanum. Fairly old but well done.

Just got done with the Witcher. It would make my top 10-15 list.

I missed this post. I would get the NWN series. Not only for original campaigns, but for the replayability in the official add-ons, and the player community developed mods. A lot of good stuff!!
