I installed the original Neverwinter Nights (Diamond Pack) and tried to start it. Immediately I get a message saying that Neverwinter Nights is not compatible with Vista. Is there anyway around this? I could've swore there were people on here who played the original on their Vista machines...

if i recall the procedure correctly - you need to have dx9.0c+ + some dlls that you're to dl from the web to make everything work well on vista... i'll try to find the links for the site with those dlls or at least the dlls' names, but i don't promise anything.

Did you try "run anyway"? The list was made, like, during the Betas and hasn't been updated.

This wasn't even an option....it offered to "look for a solution online" which I tried...it simply came back with "Neverwinter Nights is not supported by Windows Vista" and a check of the Bioware FAQ site for NN confirmed this....it also said that attempting to play it on Vista could result in system instability in the future.....so I baled...thanks for the feedback everyone..now I just hope Neverwinter Nights 2 is compatible with Vista-64!

NWN isn't incompatible with Vista. Vista is incompatible with NWN.

NWN platinum installed fine on my system, ran it for a few minutes to see if the game would run and succeeded first time without having to edit any of the .ini files. I agree with Lithus in that the game just won't run well on x64 OS systems.

I'm gonna keep this short and sweet.

It isn't hate crap when three times I've installed Vista, and three times I've gone back to XP because of various issues.

To be fair, I know that a large majority of people do not have problems anymore (they used to). I'm not one of them, I'm in the group that still cannot use the OS for whatever reason. So I'm still against Vista personally. But seriously, Vista64 has not gotten nearly as much attention as Vista32...and that's MS's fault. Vista64 will probably go the same way that XP64 did because of a lack of interest and the fact that most OEM installs (the way a LOT of people get the OS) are 32bit.

I was just thinking...has anyone thought to install NWN into a Virtual Machine under Vista 64? The graphical requirements are 'old' enough that it MIGHT work, just an idea.

I just want to say, NWN2 has no official support for Vista x64, but that doesn't mean it won't work. However, the game is still buggy, which annoyed me to the point that I stopped playing it half-way through.

My point is, there was no need for your previous comment. It would be the same if I went to the Mac forums whenever someone had a problem and said, "well, it's because your OS sucks". And you know how that turns out.

Played NWN2 all the way through multiple times on Vista 32. (this laptop actually)
So did two of my friends.

I gotta say, not one of us had any trouble with the game and went through multiple times.

Keep vista, your drivers, and NWN2 patched and you should be golden.
    (for Vista 32 anyway)

First of all thanks to all of you for the feedback...any to be honest, to me personally - I welcome all opinions..whether they be positive or negative..that way we all know what to possibly expect....I am a relative Newbie to modern laptop gaming (hence my name) ...so please excuse the ignorance...but what is your opinion? Did I make a mistake in going with Vista-64 when I ordered my 5793? It came with recovery disk for both Vista-64 and Vista-32....what would you guys recommend ? Thanks!

There's at least 3 quest bugs, still unfixed with the latest patch, that can make it so that the game will not continue any further. Call me unlucky, but I got halfway through the game, hit one of the bugs, and found out all my save points were after the point of no return.
