For those who don't know, Black Mesa (formerly known as Black Mesa Source, but there were some legal issues there) is a Half Life 2 mod (now using the orange box engine) that acts as a total recreation of Half Life 1's story and gameplay.
The entire mod is built pretty much from scratch, from the levels to the models to even the voice acting and soundtrack, this is no port, this is no Half Life Source, this is not just some custom campaign levels for half life 2.
I could go on, but why not just check out their trailer, and while you're at it check out all the sweet content on their media page, and the rest of their site. They even have a devblog where they go into some of the technical aspects of developing the mod, and a download page with some of the soundtrack available.
Trailer: Youtube (widescreen), or Filefront (720p)
Website: here
Media: here (renders, screenshots, concept art, etc...)
Devblog: here
Downloads: here (music, wallpapers, the old teaser)
Oh, and if you still haven't watched the trailer, the mod is on schedule to come out in 2009.
P.S. They have more youtube videos, like voice acting bloopers, here

Interesting. I have only played Half Life 2, but not Half Life 1 (or HL2's episodes) yet. This is worth a try, once it's released.
-
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh . awesome.

masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
wow. wow. wow.
as impressive to me today as hl2 seemed to me when its trailers came out. -
Thanks! I've been waiting for this so long I forgot it was coming.
Kind of like the KOTOR II restoration pack. -
wow that looks siiiick!
-
wow!!!!!!!
-
I've been following this one for years, but It's still a ways off. I'd be absolutely amazed if it really did come out in 2009. I really like how they used some of the new scripting techniques from the orange box version of source in this. It looks great. I think one of my favorite parts about this mod, and actually many hl2 mods, is that it looks so professionally done. This mod looks MUCH better than many retail games that are coming out these days.
-
I wonder if they'll leave all the old map exploits in there, that was one of my favorite things about Half Life.
-
-
wow that looks great. im excited for it.
-
I wonder how much they will sell it for. Obviously it has taken quite a bit of work...but a sub $50 price tag would definitely be a winner.
-
They seem to have been working on this since 2004.
-
That's also why it's been in development for so long though, the team isn't as big and they have to do it in their free time.
I suppose they could decide to charge for it though, like Garrys Mod, but it wouldn't be $50 if they did. -
I don't see them charging for this. I'd pay for it, but I don't think they'll charge.
-
Not only will they not charge for it, they aren't allowed to, since it's a mod. They could conceivably get it picked up and turned into a full game, but untill then: mod, free, long wait, looks amazing.

-
Ayle dont even give them the idea to pay us pl0x
i payed for Gary's mod, and it was worth it, but i love freebies too!
-
free or not free, I'm getting this.
-
Seeing as how I never played Half Life 1 I don't think I would mind paying for this great looking mod.
-
-
This thing would be worth money. Unlike HL:Source, which was a joke. Sure you can play with physics, but using old textures with a new engine is unbelievable, especially when they charged money for it.
-
Wow I havent even scratched more than 4 hours on HL1 yet, but I've beaten HL2 1.5x lol. Love the game, makers of this mod deserve the money.
Wait, I remember saying that about everything Valve does. Hmm, if BMS is lucky enough, Valve will hire them. After all, they did say they hire modders.
-
Yea i heard HL: Source was a joke. I would definitely pay for this though.
