I need a new game, preferably a good new first person shooter, or something very fun and entertaining with excellent visuals. Id also prefer that the game DOESNT run through steam. I don't care if it's single player or multiplayer, I'm fine with both, I'd actually kind of prefer if it was single player (Or both).

If the game has a demo available, MAJOR brownie points. Being able to test the game before I put down the money would really help me decide. Trailers are nice, but watching a game is not the same as playing it for yourself.

I already have some online first person shooter games through steam, and don't really need any more.

I'm not really into 3rd person games, it would have to be excellent 100/100 for me to really want it (Final Fantasy 7 comes to mind [back in the day]).

    Please post all suggestions/ideas/screenshots/demo links/etc.

Any and all help is appreciated, thanks in advance!

Crysis, Bioshock, Fallout, Half Life Series, Stalker series (if you can live with the RPG elements, such as slowly getting better with the guns), Quake 4, Quake Live, Fear 1&2., Call of Duty 4 (better than 5 IMO)..the list goes on :)

Ill download the crysis and bioshock demos tonight

Ive also seen a ton about prototype, just wish there was a demo for it or a way I could test it out before buying. I just don't know if it could continuously hold my attention for a long time, the movies of gameplay ive seen get somewhat boring after a couple minutes.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Easily the most influential FPS of the past few years. There is a single player demo available as well.

    Also an excellent choice.

Hell, on Steam (yeah, I know, I know), you can get the Unreal Deal pack for $30, which includes literally every Unreal series game ever released.

I just finished COD:4 SP today... had a bit of time on my hands. It's very pretty, very engaging and altogether fun, but I've found myself tired of FPS gameplay mechanics after playing it. It's intense, but most of the shooting is exactly the same, minute after minute.

Crysis was a surprisingly good game, because I kept myself in the dark as to its storyline. Very impressive.

Just started Far Cry 2 and so far I'm bored... the game is too simple after playing Fallout 3 and COD:4, although the environments are pretty.

Bioshock, FEAR and Cryostasis are all good thrillers, and Dead Space ranks highly as long as you're okay with its viewing angle (I personally loved it, even though it got in my way. Excellent theatrical choice.)

If you're looking for the full package of great graphics and intense, varied gameplay, however, I'd have to recommend Microsoft Word 2007.

Actually Fallout3 can be played as a FPS if you want to. It's not the best way to play it; but its very possible. Strictly speaking its a FPS/RPG hybrid; because Bethesda decided NOT to go full RPG with it; arguably it means it can be played as either, you can chose to play in a more RPG styled way focusing on stats, VATs etc; or play strictly as an FPS.

Id bet that not using VATS/using stats would cut the amount of time I put into that game by atleast half haha... VATS was half the fun! exploding bodies and rolling heads? yeahhhh lol.... I just finished FO3... and just started playing Operation Anchorage, then onto the other addons :)... I would highly recommend this game as well

I'll probably get Crysis and Time Shift, Bioshock looked pretty cool too but I didnt get a chance to play through the demo yet. Not gonna spend the money on prototype without playing it first.

    Thanks everybody!

You can try FEAR 2 as well and download a demo on this site. It wasn't as good as the original FEAR, but I've heard its still worth playing.

By the way, you can download demos of Bioshock at these sites:
    Fileshack Bioshock Demo
    GameDaily Bioshock Demo

You get to play the first 30 minutes or so of the game but you need the latest ATI and NVIDIA drivers (in your case, ATI).

For game demos of other games, you can check out FilePlanet FPS Game Demos and GameDaily Free Game Downloads

I wouldn't bother with time shift, get bioshock instead you won't be disappointed its a amazing game. I know they are both 3rd person but i would look into Mass Effect & Dead Space as well both cracking games and can be picked up cheap as well.

I have a friend with Fear2 so I'd just borrow it if I wanted it, I already beat Fear multiple times.

I'm not a big fan of MOH, DOD, COD, BF1942, etc. I prefer futuristic FPS over old-timey FPS :p, can't help it, just my personal preference.

I already downloaded the Bioshock demo and started it up, I'll beat it later tonight or tomorrow. I have ATI in my work pc and NVIDIA in my home pc, both have good updated drivers ;), and both perform flawlessly.

I remember seeing the previews for Time Shift and thought it was totally awesome, however I'm not usually one to buy games when they first come out. I usually like to wait for reviews, be able to test the game first, price to come down, etc. Unfortunately this style makes me forget about games, and Time Shift was one of the games I forgot about, so thank you very much for reminding me! :)

Bioshock is pretty cool but looks like it will take a while to learn.

This is great though, now I'll have way more game choices :)

It's a dated game, but I absolutely loved Painkiller and the expansions/sequels.

Painkiller is what you get if you take all plot out of an FPS and just focus on shooting. I never got bored.

Err, what? It's a fun and pretty game, sure. But the most influential FPS in the past few years? Come on. It's just like all the previous Call of Dutys: a heavily scripted, on-the-rails shooter where nothing happens if the player doesn't advance.

Fun and nicely done but there's absolutely nothing innovative or new about it. It's just a refinement of the previous ones.

What would you say is the most influential fps of the last few years?

COD4 is one of the most talked about modern fps games, and rightly so, as it is like playing in an action movie! however if you do not like linear games and prefer sandbox.. then sure fallout 3 (fps/3ps/rpg) is probably going to be the favourite, then somewhere following would be farcry 2, which is an example of how a sandbox game trying to be a fps can fail (imo). Don't get me wrong, farcry 2 is a great looking game, and the physics are very good. However, once you have spent hours walking (or taking the bus occasionally) across the same desert, just to find that some more AI have respawned at the outposts you only just cleared, and then collapsing from malaria at the most awkward moments.

It all depends on what is the most important aspect of a fps for you

    Realism - Arma 2
Storyline - Bioshock, COD4, Fallout 3, HL2, Brothers In Arms Hells Highway
    Re-playability - Fallout 3, Bioshock
Graphics - Crysis, Farcry 2, Fallout 3, Brothers in Arms, Bioshock
    Multiplayer - COD4, CSS, L4D, TF2

These are just a few games off the top of my head, if you can think of any more please say. But it just shows, what games have really changed that much from their predecessors? Arma 2 is a better looking and bigger version of arma. COD4, as LJK said is just like the previous CODs but in a modern context. Fallout 3 is basically oblivion, in a different setting with modern weapons. Brothers in Arms is a better looking version of the previous games. Out of these, Bioshock and Half Life 2, both of which are reasonably old (compared to arma 2, farcry2 etc), yet still show that a well written story and well scripted gameplay can make for an awesome game.
Sorry for the rant, just thought i'd have my say.

This one is a pretty boring game. And it's a complete turd to get it to run on any modern system.

Edit: Oh, and FEAR2 is a Steam game. I don't think you're going to be able to borrow it, unless your friend gives you his Steam login.

How could i forget Painkiller!!! I have a golden edition , but havent finished The Battle out of Hell . Its an awesome game which for some reason was forgotten . I guess people tend to remember games which stunned them by their plot/story It has awesome physics , nice Metal soundtracks and lots of gore . Hordes of enemies and impressive boss fights .ITs similar to Serious Sam games . A must for any FPS lover .

It's not terribly innovative, but you can't question that it's one of the most popular games ever made. It doesn't have to bring anything brand new to the table in order to be influential. I don't think I know anyone who doesn't play it. :p

Back in 2001, look at Halo. Aside from the recharging energy shield thing, it didn't really innovate much of anything either. Completely linear gameplay, standard sci-fi weapons. That doesn't stop it from still being the best selling video game franchise to this day.
