When Penryn comes out in 2008 will Nvidia/ATI be putting out a new set of GPU's or are the current/upcoming Nvidia 8x00 and ATI 2x00 series going to last for a year or two?
I'm considering buying a laptop for portable gaming as a perk rather than a necessity and until recently have paid zero attention to laptop hardware. If the Penryn hardware will have the current GPU's then I have a lot less reason to wait I'm just not sure how often new generations of GPU's hit the mobile scene.

It's a big unknown at this time. My guess would be that the 8800M will come out later this year, and a mobile quad-core Penryn will be out sometime early 2008, and that will probably be the best you can get for a long while.
Considering the Go 7950 GTX came out last October, and it's still the king of mobile GPU's, it might be a while before the 8800M is replaced by a "9800M" or whatever Nvidia comes up with. -
From what I've seen so far. The 88xx series could possibly last for a year or two.

NVidia plans to make a new generation of GPU's every year. In the fall, they release the high-end parts (9800 this fall, presumably), and midrange/mobile parts in the spring.

I think by the end of this year the 8800m should be out, and maybe even the 8900m (along with the desktop version)?
Off-topic: anyway wonder what they're going to name the Geforce cards after the 9xxx series? The 1xxxx series maybe lol? -

I think Nvidia has been using ATI's names since the geforce 7 series? I could be wrong.
Back on topic: If you wait new things will always come out. Basically you will be waiting forever. I believe the mobile 8 series is still new....so I think you should be looking forward to the 8800m or 8900 rather then the 9800 or 9900 if that is what it is going to be called if you are going to game.
Just my opinion of course. -
I'm really looking at notebooks in the 13-15 inch range so the top of the line mobile cards aren't really my concern. I'd really prefer the smallest/lightest laptop I can get that will still run the games I want. Minimum requirement for me is enough hardware to have smooth raiding in wow (or some other mmorpg). Just not sure if an 8400m gs (like the one in the dell xps m1330) will fit the bill. If it doesn't do what I want I either move up a size class or wait for a better card to be placed in a small chassis. Again, this is more of a perk/secondary gaming system so I don't need a desktop replacement. I'd much rather have portability, build quality and good battery life in my laptop than an 8800 or whatever card.

The 8600m is available in 15" notebooks. It's a nice step up from the 7600, and should have no problem with mmorpg games.
New GPU's with Penryn?
