Now by a show of hands, who wants to play but can afford to spend about 1.5-2k?
I don't think we need an actual show of hands here to answer those questions. And no it is not your problem we are poor, sure. That does not make for a good reason, however, to completely ignore apparently inferior GPU upgrades that cost about $200 and still pretty much make all games of today playable.
Finally, no the argument isn't about SLI. The dual GPU argument barely makes for a page or so of this thread. The argument was about whether NBC's review was truly nonsense and then whether it was worth paying the premium for the GPU, not for support for dual GPUs. I think it has been answered several times by many sensible people that it does not matter. Even 40 fps and 55 fps which is a big difference, does not matter to many.
Because I do not have an extra 500 bucks to get the 680m does not mean I should be stuck with the 675m. For people like me, there is the 7970m that gives similar performance in most games and for the ones that it doesn't do so well on, well, I'll play those AFTER the drivers come out. For others who can afford to pay that kind of money, they get the 680m. It really does not matter whether my GPU is better or not. If the 680m is better, well done nvidia. -
And the "crack" was light banter to a poster who thought the thread might be closed. But now that I think about it, it turns out to that it actually would be an interesting social science set up given some of the posts that came afterward.
PMs were sent - by me. You can ask a few in this thread (not that they would admit to it, considering). Warnings were issued also. "Well placed warning posts" were made in a number of these threads. Posts were edited also. And this is for both the sides of the "war?" The mod team doesn't play favorites - unless we really like you and you have been an even keeled poster. We're always on the look out for mod candidates.
BTW, we have to deal with this GPU fanboy nonsense in multiple sections of the forum. Sager/Clevo, Alienware, and Gaming. What's funny is that some of the same posters are in all three sections going on about this or that. Some are sensible in one section but go batty in another.
If there's anything I'm biased against, it's trolls that come running to the mod team for protection against reaction to their trolling. It's hypocritical.
Well, anyway, your post is so way off base with this assumption of AMD bias. Your fanboy affinity is making you see something that simply isn't there.
Cloudfire starts a thread for self validation and with trolling language in the title. "The truth." That ruffled AMD GPU owner's feathers. And all he did was post an alternative review of the 680M. It showed that in most games, the 680M is better. In others, not so much. Great but not surprising. After all, Nvidia has taken the lead in GPUs for a long time now. For the first time, it appears AMD comes close and some could say bests Nvidia at this game or that. And that it's cheaper, some really dig that.
But there really wasn't anything for anyone to argue over. Numbers are numbers. But when you have a notorious troll starting a thread with what amounts to "I told you so," you're going to get certain reactions from posters.
Personally, I like the fact that the 680M uses 28nm die and consumes less power and runs cooler which makes for a quieter idle. Perfect for an SLI set up that if I were a gamer, I would go for. SLI would be needed for me since I would pair it with a 27" IPS monitor @ 2560 x 1440. Only thing that seems to be an issue is Clevo/Sager's implementation of Optimus in that it routes through the Intel Integrated GPU's post processing. I'd rather they did it the way Alienware does. But as it is, Clevo chose the cheaper way out.
So much for your bias theory, huh? You might want to read around a bit before laying a charge of bias. If you had claimed I was Nvidia biased, you might have had some more posts to use to back that up (1 thread in particular where you would find the majority of my posts). I'd still deny it since I don't have a dog in this GPU war nor any material interest as I'm not in the market for a gaming notebook at this time nor in the next year or so.
Next time you want to lay some charge of bias, you might want to investigate the post history of the one you're laying charge against. Or if that's too much trouble, which might be the case if the poster has thousands of posts, simply ask. -
Can anyone please point me to the posts where people are trashing nvidia? among all this talk (I tried to read as much as possible) I didn't encounter a single word against nvidia (except for the price tag, but let's face it, it is 300 dollars more, nothing unreal I guess..)
what happened was:
Cloud: nvidia kicks amd's @$$!!!
Rest: no, it does not, they score the same...
Cloud: here look! another review where nvidia kicks amd's @$$!!!
Rest: no, it is still the same.
Cloud: but here...
you get the gist.. no one ever trashed nvidia... -
Why bother
-
gosh I wish i could say a knotty word

Cloudfire, yes, your post was deleted. Stick to actual facts and actually helping people like you claim you want to do. Please stop playing innocent and making all sorts of unfounded assumptions. Your rap sheet of infractions/warnings and poster reports complaining of your actions betrays you.
(And no they aren't all from 7970 owners as you suspect - shows just how much you get under poster's skins when both camps are irked.) -
SlickDude80 Notebook Prophet
Except for Akimox's post about dpc latency (which is significant for those that are audiophiles), this post sums it up nicely...no one ever trashed nvidia except for the price -
I could post a huge list with links to thinkpad, macbook and dell forums with model numbers and GPU failure details, but that am no longer interested in wasting my time.
I'm not a AMD missionary and don't really care who you vote for. From now on threads like this one are on my ignore list. If someone wants my opinion - PMGood luck in your holy war

I know it's not near the fastest, but that's not stopping me from having a blast playing my games.
For what it's worth, I got Windows 7 for a special advance order price before it was released. Order total on Amazon: $54.43 on June 25, 2009. Microsoft was definitely pushing that deal. It's not unprecedented and not because of how they feel about Windows 8 chance of success. -
I reckon if nvidia release a 700m series as power hungry as a 675m we will be looking at 7000-8000 3dmark11 scores for same power consumption as a 675m. We can already see big oc on 680m to 7000 3dmark11 scores as they are nowhere near the limit of a mobile gpu on 28nm. -
Didn't you get warned about this? I guess some people just don't learn. -
-
Well I am just comparing to 680m.
-
Even if you have the "fastest" or "best" it is only that way for such a short time that it is irrelevant. Honestly I'm still pretty happy with my current system, but it's just not quite enough to run some of the newer games I want to try now. Otherwise, I'd be happy to just keep using it. It has been a workhorse of a machine.
Great post adding a ton of perspective to this issue! -
thats my point 675m is basically a card that you could get nearly 2 and a half years ago.
-
Regarding your supposed bias - Look, I don't know you and your posts' history is really not the point of this discussion. Your current posts in this thread - are. Since I don't have stock options in either company, I don't care one whit about one grubby company or the other, just on what's going on in these forums and how flame wars are being dealt with.
The cost/performance of AMD sure is unbeatable, no one ever said otherwise, not even the most overzealous nVIDIA 'fanboy' (man, I hate this word) but when guys around here behave all childish, spout their flames all over the place, prevent civil discussion on the matter and gloat and make fun of anyone that might choose or suggest something in favor of nVIDIA, and they do that regardless of their denials (Sorry graz`zt and SlickDude, I can't bother tracking each and every one right now, but they are many), then this needs to be handled, and many times it hadn't, which really ruined the whole atmosphere around here. This happens on a lot of subjects unfortunately, but nVIDIA vs AMD is indeed the worst.
And yes, I bet this is a handful, but still, whole threads were destroyed by this type of behavior, and these users just kept on to the next thread, ruining one after another. And they seem to avoid being rebuked at all, as they keep on staying here and repeating their behavior. I was looking for the reason, and seeing your messages in this thread, I thought that this might be the cause these guys are still around, spewing their petrol. And regardless of reporting on their bad behavior, I noticed nothing gets done about these guys, so I thought this must be to a certain bias on the mod-team's part. Since what you've said seems like picking sides, I jumped to the conclusion that this might be the reason. I guess I was wrong and made false assumption, then, but this whole situation sure is awful. -
-
That being said. I may upgrade to a 7970M or 680M in the mid-term future if the guy trying to put a 7970M in his Sammy is successful. They both look like fantastic chips. Great performance with a power decrease. What's not to like.
Who knows by then something better may be available for me to upgrade to. -

I should have the money in place for a new laptop purchase this week. I am reading everything i can on these cards.
I'm still contemplating the 680m or going 7970m and saving the money, or more upgrades like upgrading to the 3720QM GPU... decisions decisions -
Fanboism seems to be a more modern phenomenon. Seeing as such, we'd rather close threads than ban posters. We've banned the trolls, fanboys and miscreants in the past and they just end up coming back under a new persona. We sometimes catch those also. But it just ends up being a contest of whack-a-mole.
Decent threads with useful information stay open and we eliminate trolling posts when we notice them. Warnings and possible infractions are doled out. But threads that are nothing more than cheerleading which attract flame wars will simply get closed. We're not going to ban people for falling for flame bait.

I have nothing against 40nm, I would buy it myself if its a crazy deal but when I look at a laptop I want the best price to performance ratio as well as the latest technology.

Its like my 9600m gt being rebranded to a gt220m and then keep getting rebranded to lets say 300m and 400m series with slight oc. -
The only place the 675m is mentioned in this thread is as a comparison in the original review whilst the thread was meant to be......actually I have no idea what it was meant to be but I do know it was not meant to be a 675m is power hungry thread. -
I have learnt from the op is that 7000-8000 3dmark11 100w tdp gpus are possible.
edit:In essence its worth comparing the 680m to a 670m and 7970m. Once amd and nvidia release extreme end cards it will be worth comparing to the 675m but we already have a rough idea the limit of 28nm should be at least 7000 with oc cards. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
I think I am going to grab a 680M......
I can write directly to its bios where as the 7970M is locked out for some reason.
Also optimus is more mature than enduro.
I'm going to try using another machine to flash the clevo too, then make a comparison of the two I think.
Oh and as for the other discussion in this thread:
Fanboyism (Fan = fanatic = a person whose enthusiasm or zeal for something is extreme or beyond normal limits)
You are by definition not being rational. You are being an idiot by being a fanboy. Stop it.
Also Cloud, if you have not got either a 680M or 7970M by the time I have both in my hands I will be very disappointed. -
Do a comparison between the two and test the heck out of them. That would be fun
As for the 680M, I`m waiting to relocate to a new apartment before buying a new notebook. I will be moving this fall, maybe to a new country. I`m not shure yet what will happen with my work -
Cloud, again, your post was deleted because it's pointless (the one prior to the one above). I'm not going to respond to your unfounded innuendo. Your rap sheet and the reports we've received from posters puts you out of the clear and makes you ineligible for commentary regarding who is and who is not trolling. Trolls never think they're trolling. I can't remember the last time an honest troll owned up to their trolling.
Put simply, I'm not going to ban people because you want them banned. Especially since they are merely reacting to your trolling. People have asked for YOU to be banned. But it hasn't happened has it? I suppose if we heeded to their request to have you banned months ago, none of this would have transpired.
You know, there's always some who think the mod team handles things poorly. Especially those who receive infractions. And that's natural. I don't like handing out infractions unless they are really warranted. These fanboy fights are all over the forum. It's what people seem to do these days.
In any event, let it go. Move on. Go back to being actually helpful. And stop inciting people with troll posts and attitude laced hyperbole. -
-
Really who cares what card performs better? Do any of you actually make money off of either card? No.
Get whatever fits your freaking budget and move on.
P.s How can you discredit NBC and then post a review from a no-name website and claim it to be truth is beyond me.
This is completely childish behavior! -
Both perform extremely well, from everything that I've seen.
In dual card mode, I've seen nothing on the 680M, and the 7970M seems to have problems with some folks on this board, others none. -
I'm sorry, but if any of this were true, you would know it isn't the GPU which fails most of the time. At 3-4 years in, its almost always power related. While I have had gpus fail, they are very very low on the list of likelyhood and you would know that.
I'm sure I could list laptops with gpu failures, but that would be silly as you'd have to list the failures based on everything else which would dwarf the gpu issues. (this is even counting nvidia's manufacturing flaw from a few years back)
Both companies make GPUS with very good tolerances usually and if any company has an advantage it is minor. (especially on the high-end)
Aikimox, you DO seem to care way too much about spreading misinformation to furthur that holy war you speak of. Enough to offer misleading and ultimately meaningless lists.
It's just a GPU... why all the emo? Why the misinformation? Why is it a holy war for you?
Why is the 680m actually performing admirably a threat? Why does it require this level of emotional response?
Competition between AMD and Nvidia is a WIN for everyone.
I am not sure of why AMD owners need to make up any other advantage than price. Those that own a 7970m paid $250-300 less for an extremely powerful GPU that probably is within 5-10% overall one way or the other.
People seem to forget... the posters here are often seen as experts and people really do make decisions based on what is accepted as the truth here.
If you post FUD, you will be called out by posters like me. -
Though I do think it's amusing when someone gripes having a CF 7970M and then screaming, I paid for it, I should have support for it. But then CF 6970M users screamed also, not much changed. 5870M CF users screamed, and yeah... AMD should provide better support for mobile CF, and game developers SHOULD actually develop their games for multi-GPU support considering the prevalence of such systems now, but they don't. And yet, I guess, somehow you though having CF 7970M would be different.
And yet there hasn't been a game that requires the power of multi-GPU in YEARS, not since Crysis 1 first came out. Even Metro 2033 with playable at steady framerates with a 5850 budget high performance single card with AA and tessellation on. But whatever, gripe away with your CF systems. Maybe it will change with the 8970M, but yeah... pfft, like that will happen. Maybe console game developers will care about ensuring their games run properly for PC Gamers with multi-GPU setups. Oh wait, am I talking about fantasy or reality. ROFL, like that will happen. -
Another AMD vs Nv war thread...
Lets see some numbers talking and some technical analizys of card behaviour. -

MY GOD DON`T YOU EVER STOP.
F*CK THIS FORUM. I`m done! Give me infraction for bypassing the language filter. I don`t care. Take away my rep points, I don`t care. -
Just finished reading this thread, there seem to be quite a few taunts and some name calling directed at Cloud. I don't see Cloud utilizing personal attacks. The fact that you hate Cloud's opinion doesn't justify all this hate, name calling, and ban wishes. Actually, none of Cloud's posts justify that.
Sure, if you're a rabid fanboy, you might find the OP "offensive", but for the rest of us, meh.
MOD EDIT: read around the forum a bit and you'll see where at the animosity towards cloudfire comes from. That's what accounts for the immediate reaction to this thread and it's title. -
This is the third time Cloudfire has written he'd be gone.
He'll be back, I bet
