Hi, I thought I would post this in a general Gaming forum, I have tried posting the question in a specific forum but didn't get many responses. I pretty much only play World of Warcraft and do some photo editing. I am going to purchase a new laptop in about 2 or 3 weeks and I am looking for one with a graphics card that will allow me a high framerate while playing WoW.

Currently I play on a Latitude E6400 business laptop with an integrated graphics card and I get like 22 to 30 FPS (on Fair settings). This is ok when just running around but I love to arena and it just doesn't cut it for that.

I have been looking at Sager's and MSI notebooks with anywhere from the 560M to the 580M and the 6990. I have also seen several of them with the 570M. I would really like to keep this purchase at around $1200. Anyone have any idea's what will allow me the best WoW experience for my buck?

I will take a look at it, I personally have had one experience with HP and it was a desktop and it croaked after about 2 years so I wasn't very happy. I am very PC savvy and I have built my own system several years ago. Are the HP laptops reliable? I know thats a loaded question but worth asking. Also, I wonder if I would be better off getting a used laptop, say an Alienware thats like 2 or 3 years old from say ebay. I have had good luck picking reliable sellers on ebay, I have an old macbook that I have definitely got my money's worth out of from ebay.

I took a look at it and with just a few changes it was up to $1400, which I could probably swing. All I did was upgrade the RAM to 8 gigs (1600mhz), the hard drive to a 7200 RPM, put an operating system on it and updated the wireless card. That took it up to a little over $1400.

ive never played WoW but is it really that intensive that it needs a powerhouse gpu? i mean 560/570/580/6990 are top end.

It's always better to buy ram aftermarket, OEM's overcharge way to much.

    EDIT:
Nevermind that upgrade is not that bad for $39.

    EDIT 2:

I would have to agree, but with a 580m. :)

Hi, WoW is definitely not a graphic intensive game, except for certain exceptions. Like I said, I am running it on a business laptop with an integrated card on FAIR settings and getting 20 to 30 FPS. But, if you Raid or do Arena's, you need more juice. The reason being is say for raiding, you might have 25 other players in the same spot fighting the same boss, and the lag can be horrible without an adequate graphics card. Same goes for Arena's but for different reasons. So, with that being said, I would like something that will run it for years to come. I am afraid if I go with a lesser card and another expansion or 2 comes out and they change the engine, I could be back to where im at today. I am sure the 560 would run WoW fine now, I am not sure what kind of FPS I would get, but I think the best GPU I might be able to swing is the 6990. Or, I could buy something with a 570M that would allow me to upgrade to a 580M when they come down in price.

You might be right as far as overkill, I am really looking to get atleast 60fps while raiding and 80 to 100fps while just out questing on my own. I was hoping someone read this that plays WoW and had one of these cards that could give me an idea of what I might be looking at fps wise.

I tried the trial WoW to check performance, and mines around 100+ fps while playing normal.
This was with all the eye candy enabled in Dx11 mode at 1920x1080 on my HD 6970m.

But dont underestimate WoW either, allot of small improvements have been made so its not as easy to run as in vanilla.

I hate to hijack this thread and I'd hate even more to start a new thread, but would anybody know how an nvidia 540m runs WoW?

I haven't played in a few years and with SWTOR being in the state that it's in, I'm considering going back to WoW.

Thank you for any help received.

My 560M plays on ultra at 1600x900 and I get > 100 walking around, if I remember correctly. Next time I get a chance I'll bench it for you. But personally I think you'll be more than fine with a 560M

I play SW: TOR on my M18 and get 85-100+ on Ultra

    Incidentally, SWTOR > WoW anyday.

I just read some reviews on newegg about the laptop I just orderd with the 540m card and there were some real good notes about how well it can play SWTOR and WoW. Hopefully that's the case when i get it in!
