Normally im not too impressed by screen shots of a game. But the realism in that human render is really incredible!

you can see the age spot
-
waits to see it running at 20fps with 3X SLI GTX280s XD looks stunning
-
it's PS3 exclusive

LOL it looks like she did some wrestling when she was in high school...cauliflower ear

Not that impressed. Crysis almost does faces that well.

I can't be the first person that thought of "Chubby Rain" from Bowfinger when they read this.
These look like bullshots. If the PS3 can produce that a PC would run wild on it. -
Looks pretty good IMO. I had obviously never heard of this game before, as I clicked on the thread thinking, "How did they come up with laptop screens you can use in heavy rain?????" and didn't quite understand why there was no laptop in the picture. Only then did I read the posts and realize it was a screenshot of a game.
Looking at it for more than the laptop that isn't in it, it could use some more anisotropic filtering - the background isn't that crisp. But the person is very good. -
To those who said video games will never look realistic.
This one is amazing. I'm really excited to see what games will be like in 20 years or so.

What exactly is this game? Is it being developed for the PC? Genre?
-
It's being developed for Playstation 3 and it's said to look the most photo-realistic game ever. It's a mystery/thriller game, coming out late 2008.
Information hole : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_Rain
From a technical and technological standpoint, notable features of The Casting include full body and facial motion capture, real-time tears and wrinkles on the face, advanced skin shades, and some advanced rendering features, such as depth of field, spherical harmonics, auto exposure and high dynamic range rendering. The technology enables animations of pupil dilation, tongue, eyes, fingers, and dynamic hair with physics. The game engine also supports real-time post-processing, with which E3 attendees could interact at the event. Hair physics is achieved by the use of PhysX by Ageia. Facial motion capture was recorded using Vicon Peak MX40 cameras and system, and was enhanced with a muscle system. -
So it's the PS3's attempt at making a Crysis-equivalent tour de force in graphical power. Interesting how the game isn't a FPS like the usual graphics showcases.
-
I love how everyone praises this game yet they know little about it or it's gameplay.
Lets see how it plays first! -

Not that impressive imo. Yes they rendered the faces and hair nicely but the environement is lacking in all the pics. Also the cloth renderer is pretty bad, in the pic because her jacket looks like a board, with no folds or bends.
-
People come on, don't get all excited when you haven't seen the finished game, but only a close up screen shot with all the rendering power focused on that point and nothing else around. If all consoles were to render one face really nicely and forget about the environment and its effects, then every game would seem as realistic.
You guys ever saw that "screen shot" above? Well, it was to be what heavenly sword looks like in game, since its a screen shot. But, I'll tell you, as will anyone else who played the game, it looks nothing like that. Today's consoles can't handle the shader and AA processing needed to make an image look as crisp as the above one. -
As for the two last bashers, since when do your clothes have bends or folds when you're standing in the rain?
"Today's consoles can't handle shaders and AA"?
Well, it's obivious that you don't know anything about Playstation 3's or Xbox360 hardware, so I'll explain this as simply as I can - consoles aren't like PC's, these machines have exclusively built up gpu's and cpu's, and when combining either Playsation 3's extremley powerfull CELL with it's nVidia RSX you can do much more graphically than Crysis will ever be. (Uncharted? Resistance 2? Killzone 2) As for the Xbox360, it's already 3 years old console, but you will still need a top-notch computer to run games what are released on it or will be. (Gears of War 2, anyone?) -
As for the retort stating that you will need top notch pc's to run games released on consoles, it is not due to the fact that mediocre pcs with the top 7900 desktop card can't handle it. It is in lieu to the issue that these games are tailored to run on those systems at a set resolution and known hardware spec. On the pc side, you will need a far larger performance curve in order to get the same graphical level and playability, but not because you PC is underpowered, but because it the software was not optimized for your specific machine with basic level tweaking for performance. -
Most of the multiplatform games have looked a bit worse than X360 versions because they were ported. Yes, that's right. When Playstation 3 came, nearly all of the multiplatform games have been ported from X360, but games where PS3 were the lead platoform looked better, as for the exclusive games we're already seeing what PS3 is capable off, and not to forget even Uncharted game devs said they only used 30-40% of PS3's actual power, most of the other devs have complained it's hard to code games for the PS3 because of the complicated CELL at first and so it was better to just port the games.
Also, a year ago devs said they only use a very small % of the Cell's power, but now, a week ago Uncharted devs said they only used 40% of it and so far it's one of the greatest games. If you really own a PS3 then you should know it.
This should be clear now.
About the PC part, I was not talking about mediocre PC gaming rigs, I meant high-end rigs most of the hardcore fans have, and again you missed something .. all the games what are released on X360 are being developed at PC, that's why most of the X360 *only* games are avalible on PC, not to mention it's all in Microsoft hands. -
Her teeth look fake!
-
IMO the enviroment looks like crap. so that game isnt taxing graphically at all like some PC games out and Games to come, detailed enviroment is 100% more taxing than somekind of face render.

Yes most cloothes do not look like they are painted on even if it is in the rain. They do not contour to your body perfectly, and have their own shape instead of being a flat object on your body.
-
This game has been shown for a while. These are the only new screenshots to come in a long time.

Bottom line is that PCs are constantly evolving, consoles are NOT. They represent a fixed point in time for technology.
The fact that I can play Gears on my 8600m GT full details at 1280x800 (better than 720p) is a fair testament to that statement. The Xbox was released on Nov 22, 2005. The 8600m GT May 9, 2007. That's a year and a half of improved PC technology.
Either way the X360 and PS3 are fun gaming devices, but so is my PC. -
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Yeah but the difference is, when you go into 1080p it looks alot better, though some of our members are gaming on that on their lappies, but then it becomes a more expensive proposition. Though consoles still have some aliasing issues even then. Completely agree with you though ht.

I like what I'm seeing.... Now could somebody please explain to me why this kind of thread always have to end in a "bloodbath"???
-
Only the actual human models looks good. Look at the background and texturing, looks crap to me.
Yes of course PS3 has overpowered Crysis, the Cell is the most powerful CPU out there and the RSX Aka 7800GTX is the fastest GPU out there. Seriously did you just woke up from your dream? Have you ever played Crysis? Comparing a Corridor shooter to an open ended shooter with miles ahead graphical quality.

Enough already with the ps3/pc comparison!!!

Personally, I'm really hyped by the idea of the game.
A phenomenally pretty game that's NOT about big men with big guns shooting BIG monsters (see: Halo series, Crysis, Gears of War, Resistance: Fall of Man, ... you get the picture)?
Where do I sign up? I really enjoyed Fahrenheit, despite its shortcomings, and Heavy Rain, as described by Cage, seems to be an effort to improve on the former game's weak points.
Oh, but yeah... the fact that they only ever render the people in isolation (bg has blur applied) makes one sad. Guess we'll have to wait for another console hardware generation before we can have both insanely detailed environs and characters at once. Plus, I'm curious to know whether they've improved on the uncanny valley effect from their original tech demo in 2006. Have to wait for video for that though... -
Isn't this supposed to be the spiritual successor to Indigo Prophecy?
Whatever the case, the human face certainly does look like a human face! -
I hate to take sides but after comparing those Uncharted vs Crysis pics its not even close.

A fact is a fact because it simply is something that exists. A lawful fact can be proven, but an actual fact is like proving that water is wet. It is an existential truth. Sure there may variability to the symantics, but it is what it is.
Now back to your regularly scheduled programming... that's a fact. -
