It's a low end of a mid-range GPU. It can handle most newer games at 720p and low to medium detail. I would just recommend either Avast Anti-Virus (Free version) or Microsoft Security Essentials (also free).

Maybe get ccleaner and glary utilities and do scans with those periodically to keep all the clutter from gobbling up hard drive space or resources.

    Maintenance:
MS Security Essentials (best free antivirus software - I use it too and I had no probs so far) + Comodo Firewall and Spybot as extra (I could also recommend other software for advanced users, but these 3 for security are just fine)
    CCleaner - general maintenance
RevoUninstaller - uninstaller software (better that inbuilt win utility)

MSIAfterburner - monitor your CPU/GPU temps and other (good while playing games)
HWinFO64 - system profiler with similar features

    Gaming:
You seem to have a mid-range graphics card. It will handle most of the games you throw at it pretty well, but do not expect high resolutions and max settings on latest titles. For a more detailed view of what your card is capable of and how games perform on it, check this: Geforce GT 540M
You need to scroll down the page a bit to see game titles.

    Good luck! :)

    EDIT: Ninja'd :D

Any other recommendations? I just bought a Vaio F23 and I wan't to know what steps should I take after I get it all setup? I haven't had a Sony laptop and I don't want to miss any critical programs, tools, procedures, etc.

Also, what are some good applications to get? I don't mind hearing the gamut if it means I can use this rather expensive laptop productively. Thanks for all the help.
