Hey! Yesterday found good news. New Stalker game is finally out and it's free. Although is was meant as a mod before it is now a completely full game with partially same story as Shadow of Chernobyl (or it looks like).

I have just played and aside that it is not well optimized (not surprise as it is Stalker after all :)) and better looking it has many new features like helicopter patrols or a belt where you can stick detector, ammo and other stuff. Batteries for flash torch exist now, as well as some new cans of food.

As I heard, this game is free because some jackass leaked beta version of this Lost Alpha and therefore now authors can't make a deal with any distributor as no one wants to invest in something which is already became free. Creators spent their free time for almost 7 years and their plans were ruined but despite that they finished the project as soon as they could and continued doing bugfixes.
If you liked the game and want to donate do it at their official english site Dezowave Group - Headquarters

    So here we are.

Wasn't HL2 leaked too and then released normally?
Currently I'm not interested in it (have a bunch of stuff to do and other games to play), but once I'll be ready to play some STALKER I'm gonna try this out...
Hope it will run on my laptop...

Does this require installation of an original STALKER Game? Or is it independent?

Surely it's independent, that's why it is a full game :)

As to HL2 leaks in the past... Yeah, it has much same in the story (both leaked betas and both were bugged etc) but Lost Alpha has no marketing at all and HL2's predecessor (HL) does not look as close as HL2 itself :)

And yeah, I forgot to mention (good it or not) but you can drive a car in this game :) Watch screenshots in the first post.

I'm a bit confused - it sounds like this was a mod in the first place. Are you suggesting that the creators of the mod (now converted to standalone but using the same commercially-protected properties, including the name) were unable to market this to publishers because of a leaked beta?

If I understand what you're saying, they're unable to market it to publishers because it's a modification based on a copyrighted property and so it would never have been marketable in the first place. There are tens of thousands of game mods out there, many of which represent more man-hours and longer development times than this one, and they're all free because they can not legally be sold by their creators. Some of them do it for the fun or to give back to the community, others leverage their modding experience into jobs in game development or whatever other field they contributed to (composition, writing, voice acting, art, etc) in the mod.

Some of my favorite games have been total-conversion or remake mods, and it's nice to see the creators get something in return for their efforts, but the fact is that selling mods is not a viable way to do so unless it's their own intellectual property and they build it to be a standalone product (see the commercial release of Dear Esther).
