I updated the notebook release just now, using a driver cleaner which wiped out all HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video key.

I was thinking that was pretty normal. But after reboot i have noticed that the gpu (GT 240M) spend much time on high performance even when only opera browser is open (and temp. of course are higher).

Strange, uh?! I think that this is some registry key missing, so please i'm ask to post all PowerMizer** related keys (i have NO keys about PM at ALL) in HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video\{XXXX}\0000 to let me check if something was broken.

    Thanks a lot for helping!

There is a program called PowerMizer Switch which should put in the right reg keys for you.

How do you tell which power mode your gpu is operating in, is there an app.

    Thanks.

Use GPU-Z to look at the clocks your card is running at.

Usually when you aren't doing anything intensive, your videocard should not be running at max clocks since that increases heat.

My GPU properly downclocks to 275/550/300 with this driver.

ehm.. the exact opposite on mine.

with 257.15, powermizer is not stable resulting high temp even on idle and fluctuation in clock even while browsing. one reason why i revert from 257.15 to 195.62.

but 257.21 quite stable, always on lowest profile when not using 3D. also lower temp.

Anyone else notice that you can't change gpu clocks with nvidia's performance? Is it the driver?

Try using system restore and restore to a point before you updated and used the driver sweeper.

I just updated this morning also to Adobe flash player 10.1 and nvidia verde257.21.

I hear alot of people suggesting running driver sweeper before installing a new graphics driver, but I find it very unnecessary and more risky since it does delete important registry keys. So I just uninstall, reboot then installed the new 257.21 driver, no problems or complications.

The verde driver works great,, and I've noticed it does run cooler when I observe my temps using nvidia system monitor, also Adobe flash player 10.1 is awesome for streaming vids, no more full screen stuttering.

Odd. Someone on this forum reported that the only difference between the beta and the WHQL version was the certificate.

i also find it odd. but that's what happened on mine.
that's why i'm kinda hesitate when i first tried 257.21

but is it really differ only in certificate ???
since there's another version after 257.15 and before WHQL, which is 257.19
i'm certain there're some minor changes here and there.

either way, it's working for me now ^_^

It could be upping the clock because you open GPU-z, or if Opera is doing hardware acceleration for Flash.

Thanks for helping. I'm currently tying to figure out if this is really an issue. However after 5 days i can say for sure this release is a complete fail for my system. Almost random kernel crash both aero and playing battlefield 2.

Not good at all. I will soon go back to 195 series, because i've experiences random crashes starting from 197 and above.

I managed to disable PowerMizer on both my machines. I'm not sure if anyone would like to try them out.

    Regedit>

Go to HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video Then find the 0000 directory that contains the full settings for your card. It show 3DMark06 registry settings repeatedly and other settings... etc etc etc

Right click and add new String Value then Type in correct uppercase letters as follows:

    PerfLevelSrc

and value set to 2222 (for full clocks both on battery and AC)
or value set to 2233 (for full clocks on AC, but downclock on battery)

Restart your machine, and run GPUz, it should show your card running on stock clocks.

For SLI users, you need to do this twice, for both your cards. There are two 0000 directories in HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video so add PerfLevelSrc 2222 or 2233 for both 0000 directories.

I wanted to share this for a long time, as it worked for other laptops I tried, now I need someone to confirm this. Thank you. Be careful of your temperatures when you set to 2222, but I'm not concerned for my cards as my machines are capable of keeping under 55*C idling and maxed 60+ *C.

I have set both PerfLevelSrc settings to 2222 and have never downclocked since. Before manually disabling PowerMizers I am experiencing performance issues while doing AutoCAD, 3D Max or SketchUp, so disabling the downclocking helped ALOT.

When you remove any Nvidia Drivers, they leave settings and Reg keys that are not needed since you have already removed the program. If you use a Driver Cleaner after using the official Nvidia Uninstall you won't get any problems if you do it correctly.
