Your best bet of finding a good single player FPS would be by looking at ones to buy. I'm sure they're some free ones out there, but they probably aren't that great.

good single player games tend to have high production costs. they usually aren't free.

Kuma Games are free and single player. Shootout, Dino Hunters, KumaWar, etc, they use the Source engine so they look good as well.

The Cube engine games are free. I know they have a singleplayer mode but I don't know if they're story driven.

I agree with everyone else you need to fork out some cash to get a really good game. My suggestion would be to buy HL2, Doom3, Quake4 or any game that has mods. That way when you finish the game you can always download a mod.

Tell me about it. I played it on 360 and as soon as I get my laptop I will be buying it for PC. I hoping I should be able to play it at max settings!

And KumaWars is great. I love that game. I can play it on my X200M. Anything I can play on my X200M I love lol.

Just go here for lots, and lots of free FPS games. They're quite good, much better then all other freeware games in terms of graphical quality and polish. I've seen far worse budget games actually making it onto the shelves.
