The sad reality is my laptop is faster than my desktop, but in about a week no more! I am building my new desktop that will be based off a Q6600 clocked at 3ghz or higher and 2 ATI 4850's in CrossfireX, I have a nice big 37" HD LCD that really puts you in the game and for the last year or so I have had it I have had to game at 1200x700 rather than the native 1920x1080.

So now I want some good games with alot of eye candy to make me feel justified in my purchase :p

Im thinking bioshock (already played it but didnt finish it)
I'll have to see how good I can play Crysis
    Call of Duty 4

So what else is there that is alot of fun that has all the eye candy for a high system to chew threw?

Do not recommend Age of Conan I dont need to get into a MMORPG ^^ I guess I could reinstall hellgate london and see how it looks in DX10 but that game got boring fast too.

If you can splurge an extra $200, I'd really recommend upgrading those 4850's to a pair of 4870's.

Crysis will play all high on your system at at least 1920x1200 with a good 30fps. I get 30fps with Crysis all high on my system at 1680x1050, NVIDIA has better drivers for Crysis, though. How about Unreal Tournament 3?

Lost Planet is a graphical showcase that takes good advantage of multiple GPUs (NVIDIA ones at least) and DirectX 10. Another one would be Call of Juarez. I've not actually played it, but there is a DirectX 10 demo out. It can also be purchased from the Amazon marketplace for $10.

If you want high end games to test your machine here are a few to try out

    -crysis (duh)
-eve trinity (free 14 days just use it to test your system)
-small note you have to force AA and HDR with a program like Nhance, just use the oblivian trick and plug in. make sure you put shadows in 4000x4000 rez.
-devil may cry 4 demo PC
-bioshock (not that hard actully :p)

And I don't know... hope they release MGS4 for PC? lol.

Also there some new 3rd person horror action shooter coming out I can't remember the name...

UT3 is great, but it does not take that much to run it at full settings.

Bioshock would be a recommended from me, since ATI cards Destroy Nvidia's Performance at full HD, also you might wanna try DMC4 pc demo, the game is a drop Jaw in performance, looks, gameplay.

@ Trentonx, Damn! they have to release MGS4 for the PC. its the last in the series you know. :(

How are the driving mechanics for Grid? Is it like Dirt, or did they improve? When I had Dirt, the smallest turn would send me smashing into a wall. And trust me, I am good at racers.

Zee, I haven't tried it on PC, but from the 360/PS3 version, it's insanely sensitive, and from what I've heard, PC is worse.

I find it's alright with an analog controller, there is no chance playing it on the keyboard,

I love the driving mechanics, it shows a lot of realism, e.g when you plant the power on in a corner it does spin out. you have to drive it like a race car.

People have criticised it for being a bit too real but i love that aspect of it.

Most of the best looking games don't actually require much horsepower these days to be honest.

A single 4850 would easily run Call of Duty 4, Unreal Tournament 3, Gears of War, Bioshock and so on at 1920x1200 high settings no problems....

Crysis is a different story and really is a beautiful game, and with a pair of 4850's, you will be able to play it the way it was meant to be played.

Right now I feel apart from Crysis the market is pretty stagnant in terms of games pushing visual boundaries.....Call of Duty 4 doesn't look any more pleasing then the few years old Call of Duty 2 for the most part for example. I was playing Doom 3 a few days ago, and again, despite being a few years old, is not really any less impressive then some of the more recent FPS titles.

I think really at the moment, it's more so other genres like RTS, MMO, etc that the visuals are taking huge leaps forward...

to the person who said not many games push hardware on a 8800GTX in a desktop eve at fulll settings and AA+HDR in 1900x1200 I get 9 fps. And that is with 1-4 people in the same place it goes up to 400 on 400 fights.

Forgot about GRID! yeah I definitely wanna try that one I have always like racing games. My favorite series was always the Ridge Racers, and Datona USA back in the day. Some of the others are great but never quite as fun to me.

I have a great controller to play GRID with its called my Wiimote :p I have the guide posted here on how to use your wii controller on your PC.

UT3 is another I will try, I had the demo on my laptop and didnt care for it much but I admit its a pretty game, but I dont think it can steal the crown from UT2004 as my fav twitch FPS. BF2142 & BF2 are overall my fav FPS games.

@Mr._Kubelwagen I got my 4850's for 150$ each so it would cost me double to run 2x 4870's and trust me its not 2x faster I built a system based on the best performance per dollar my whole setup was only 1200$ and you can find it posted at the desktopreview.com forums.

Im ok with them not pushing visual boundrys, I mean we have to hit a point somewhere where a game cant look any better, and trying to do so only un nedingly increases hardware needs. I much prefer a game with good gameplay over good graphics. Thats why to this day I can still enjoy playing final fantasy 3 on my super nintendo just as much as anything else.

Crysis is not playing too well with 4850 Xfire they need to make a profile for it , its almost just the same as 1 card, but I am sure this is a rather high priority for them right now and it will happen soon.

I just watched a youtube video the other day where some guy had QUAD SLI with 4x 9800GX2's basically the power of 8 high end video cards and he only got 60fps average at 1600x1200 in Crysis......

He was so excited and happy but I was thinking wow what a loser thats like a cheap new car infront of you in the form of 4 big black bricks.

I already ran thru Assassins creed :( I had to play at lower settings it still looked great tho, only lag in a few situations, but I was unable to finish the game out of pure boredom after about my 3rd main assassination.

I had more fun doing the dark brotherhood stuff in oblivion than I did AC, I wish they would make a whole oblivion game just with a ton of those...

Wiimote with Grid?!?! Sounds like a dangerous combination. Have you ever tried racing games on the Wii? I found it impossible to play Carbon on the Wii, and that was an arcade racer. From what I hear, Grid is really hard and sensitive with regular game pads, so with the Wiimote, it seems crazy. But hey, if it works, kudos.

Your thinking of using the tilt for steering i guess, i was going to use the analog stick on the nunchuck. But Mario Kart Wii uses tilt and it works perfectly!

So, system is built and I got Grid..

It looks so good and plays 60fps on 1920x1080 all details maxed and 4xMSAA but... I crash about 3 or 4 minutes into a race and cant play the game :(

Works fine on my laptop no crashes but also cant play it with nearly the same kind of visual settings.

    Q6600 @ 3.6ghz
    2x 4870 @ 700/1050

Fixed it I think, I just had to drop my overclock down, seems the cards cant go very high. I didnt notice it since I did find several web results for crashes in GRID when I googled it.

Went from 700/1050 to 650/1000 and went thru like 5 races fine.

Works great with the 360 controller, I have not tried the wiimote yet.

Oh ok, then it might work. But you have to remember that Mario Kart controls as well as other Mario-based games don't need sensitive controls, whereas Grid does. I'm thinking about getting it. So you say it's not bad with 360 controller?

Just installed UT3 right before I came to work, I should get some time to play it later when I get off.

The demo ran pretty good on my laptop but I was not too impressed by the game prefering UT2004 by far, but maybe now with it all maxed out at 1080p the graphics will be more appealing.

UT3 runs more like the old UT's, like 99, then 2k4. Which I like, since I was a big ut99 gamer, but a lot of people aren't used to the TRUE king of twitch fps's ;)

Personally, my favorite visuals out of ANY of the new games is the single player in COD4. I'm not one for war games, personally, but some of the environments in that game are more beautiful than the other graphic-pushers.

Same here I am liking CoD4 500x more than overhyped Crysis that intro on the stormy boat made my jaw drop. Sad thing is totally maxed out its still well over 60fps, while crysis on just high can go below 30.....

But COD4 is smaller more defined areas vs the "sandbox" that is Crysis.

But I get crazy artifacts in crysis too, seems like every time I go to play the game there are more of them, but when I started there were none. Like its a curroption issue and it only gets worse.

One thing you have note about Crysis, is that it has to be run on the highest settings to look that good. If you have a decent machine, COD4 does a good job of displaying great graphics while not being so demanding, while Crysis will just look good. But if you have a true monster of a PC, then Crysis will be pretty in all its glory. I personally love both games.

UT3 has direct support for physics hardware acceleration, so falling debris trajectories look pretty realistic if you have a PhysX or CUDA equipped system. There are lots of new vehicles, and some game modes will have players equipped with hoverboards for crossing large maps without walking. The Leviathan received a lot more teeth with the upgraded variable weapon shield turrets (it's not nearly as easy to kill as its previous incarnation in 2004). EDIT: My two favorites of the new vehicles are the War-of-the-Worlds-style Darkwalker and the Nightshade (Cloaking mine layer tank, a royal PITA to deal with when used by a smart enemy player).

    Assassins Creed
    Crysis
    Bioshock
    Call Of Duty 4
    World in Conflict
    Need for Speed Pro Street

    try some of them
