Im new to pc gaming and just bought a MSI GE70 2OE-017US and want to know whether I need a gaming controller to get the best experience from pc gaming. I don't want to get frustrated or turned off from pc gaming by not playing right so if anyone has any recommendations id appreciate it. I sort of feel like I shouldnt get a controller because id just feel like I was playing ps3 or xbox in a way. Can pc gaming be just as fun without a controller (keyboard and track pad) or is it a necessity? Havent even opened the box yet so Im looking for some advice as to any setups to start with being new to gaming and any game advice on what would be the best to play capable on my system. (i7 and gtx765m). I wanna get into the whole pc gaming world but feel like it may be tough getting started. ANY ADVICE IS HUGELY APPRECIATED, THANKS!!!

RTS games and other games requiring plenty of user input would be better off with a keyboard/mouse. FPS games are more of an iffy; personally I'd rather have a controller, but others like the keyboard/mouse for that.

killkenny1 Too weird to live, too rare to die.
If you are using controller for PC gaming, you are doing it wrong! Just joking...maybe...
But seriously, don't you have a controller? Just play some games with and without it and see what suits you the best. -
Almost all fpses and rts games and most rpgs play better with kb/mouse.
Almost all sports games and most ports play better with controllers.
The good thing is, you have a choice in pc gaming.

that really depends on the game.
fighting games / emulators / ports like assassins creed series etc... are better with controllers.
driving Sims, flight Sims are joysticks and wheel
rest are mouse and keyboard.
mmorpgs like world of warcraft are easier to play with advanced peripherals (nostromo, multi key mouse, macro keyboard, logitech g13),although not required and is user preference.

Buy a wired 360 controller. I use mine for pretty much every game that supports it. There's only a handful of games that are better without it. Diablo clones, most RTS and most heavy as sims. Oh.. And if you are playing fps competitively in multiplayer use mouse+KB. You're talking to someone who games on the couch with a lap desk though so the controller is best for me when it's supported.

Thanks to everyone for all the input, honestly it helps a lot. I have started my journey into pc gaming and have only opened far cry 3 and im completely into it. Although I get stuck at points because it tells me to use certain mouse buttons for functions but im playing with a trackpad so im like , and then to make it worse the trackpad is being... meh, i dont know if im not pressing hard enough or what but sometimes the trackpad doesnt sense my finger and im like im getting killed here, help me out trackpad. Its not that its not quick enough or anything it just straight up doesnt even do anything when i swipe my finger sometimes. Well, i guess that is just the gaming world saying "GET A MOUSE IDIOT". And I will take that advice and buy one tomorrow. Does anyone know is this a trackpad issue or does it have to do with my laptops gaming ability? Im thinking gaming ability because I havent had any problems elsewhere with the trackpad. Sorry if i already typed too much, just sharing my experience so far and again, thanks for all the input, greatly appreciated.

it's a trackpad "issue." i mean, your trackpad is likely fine--but nobody games with a trackpad. heed the gaming world's advice, then enjoy.

Get yourself a decent mouse with at least 5 buttons (razer naga or logitech g series) and a wired xbox 360 controller
Down the road you can also get a decent keyboard and a gaming pad if you desire.
I regularly switch between gamepad and mouse/kb. For games that offer both, I try both out to see what i like.
Yes, you can use your trackpad for gaming. But...I don't know why you would. -
Yep, as others have said, trackpad should really only be used for on the go mobile gaming, as it will never be as enjoyable as a mouse. And even in that scenario, a controller would be a better choice depending on game. But, for FPS there is no substitute for mouse/keyboard IMHO.... the accuracy once you get a little practice is miles ahead of a controller.
Of course, play with what you are comfortable, there are no set rules! For example, in BF3 I play the infantry parts with mouse/keyboard and grab the controller for air warfare (heli/jet).
Have fun! -
welcome to the world of PC gaming.
using a trackpad to game, ouch that would give me a headache
like mentioned above a mouse with some buttons and a wheel is a must to master the true art of pc gaming.
take a look through the accessories thread > Computer Accessories Forum, Peripherals where lots of members have asked for advice on mice.
ive used quite a few in my time and found logitech to be the best. also got a razer but dont use that much.
i use a G700 has loads of buttons you can program but its a bit pricey. -
I play world in conflict with laptop. I just got some weeks ago, runs everything so nicely.
