    Hi all,

Just got a gateway 6860 fx and been playing warcraft 3. Played it with a vostro 1400 prior to the gateway. That lappy had the 8400m gs on it. Couldn't do max settings when I played custom game with 12 teams on at the same time.

Figured the gateway with it's 8800m gts would be able to do it no sweat, but almost the same problem today. What am I doing wrong? I can't imagine the gateway couldn't handle an old game with warcraft 3. using fraps it goes down to 0 and you can't freggen play the game, it's kinda ridiculous.

Is warcraft 3 with 12 teams really that demanding? thanks for any help.

I don't believe so. GPU isn't the only factor in gaming though. What are the rest of your specs?

The 6860 should tear right through it. Have you tried different drivers?

Highly liked that it's your drivers because your PC should surpass WC3's recommended settings. Try laptopvideo2go.com.

The only thing that may be affecting it is the slower processor since its a RTS, but like u said its a somewhat of an older game so even that processor should be running it well, hmmm.

The OP didn't say whether WC3 is patched to the latest version. ;)

It's possible that the game is running slower with both cores running. I would eliminate that by booting up the game, then bring up task manager, right click on the WC3 process and change Set Affinity to run off of 1 core. Then see if that helps any.

Most older games had no clue how to handle dual core processors.

    Hi all

i installed the latest patch on the game. I usually only play the 12 team set up but never noticed the lag while playing the campaign.

The lag doesn't happen all the time. it's weird. I use the task manager and shut off most of the processes buut doesn't help. I'll try shutting off one core though.

also i installed the latest video driver already from laptop2go.

wc3 tends to hog alot of cpu (and maybe ram) resources in custom games where units start filling up the screen, since it was designed to have a limited amount for each player in the normal ladder game.

Dude it sounds like you may need to reboot your computer to the state in which it was purchased because something seems to be wrong with your system. I had a similar problem but not as bad and i rebooted and everythings fine now...sometimes theres an abnormality in your system. Does it happen with only warcraft or do some of your other games run slow?

You don't have any problems playing the custom games with 12 teams on high settings? I played it again an there's still lag but wasn't as bad as before where it was totally unplayable. I defraged the harddrive and that seems to have helped a little.

The only other games I have are the orange box stuff, half life and team fortress and there are no problems with those games.

I couldn't find the processes option to shut off a core to see if that helped.

    12 teams?

My laptop sometimes lags up in a 4v4 footmen vs grunts!!

The game can definitely go overboard and crush your system with so many potential units and special effects on the screen.

Some people make custom maps where it spawns so many units it will crash the most hardcore system...

i play wc3 fine on max settings.
sometimes i get weird lag, and choppy graphics but i blame that on drivers.

    never tried 12 teams tho...

First possible issue: Power setting (make sure that Vista is set to "High Performance)
Second possible issue: Internet lag, if your connection sucks you can't get around this with a faster computer.
    Third possible issue: Overheating.

I think the second issue is most likely, try running a complex, many player map offline or in LAN.

Try other custom games or a ladder game, it could be just that specific map

btw, do u have other programs turned on while you are playing? because it might not be able to multitask

It's probably an internet connection problem. Try playing offline instead of on battle.net and see how that goes.

My desktop with a AMD Athlon 1.8GHz with a 7300 GT has no problems running it at maximum on XP.

Thanks for the input all. I always leave the vista setting on high setting. Been playing this offline so it's not an internet lag issue. And no overheating as my temps have been around 65 for gpu and 55 or around there for cpu. Only thing of significance running in the background would be Mcafee.

I actually tried the turning one core off as suggested and that seems to actually work. There seems to be less lag than with both cores running.

For those that say they have no problem, please try playing a custom game offline, 12 teams insane, settings all high, and let me know if there are any lags. If no significant lags for you guys, then I got some work to do trying to figure this out.

I'll try that soon but my specs aren't exactly the same as yours. Have you considered that maybe you have some sort of virus?

That's probably your problem. The AI is probably getting into a loop or something. Are you playing official maps, or are you playing user-created content?

I'd bet almost anything that your computer gets into an AI infinite loop, and can't make a decision. Your framerate isn't limited by only your card... the slower CPU that you have can hurt it as well, as well as badly designed pathing for the computer teams, and the fact that the "insane" AI's typically are much more demanding on the machine because they do a lot more calculation per turn.

From what I'm seeing, you're asking why you can't fit a camel into that water jug. The jug is bigger than the glass you were using before, after all ;)
