What genres do you like? Steam is the best overall marketplace to buy games. GOG.com has mostly older titles and some newer ones. The good thing about them is that everything they sell is free of copy protection/DRM so you can download and install them on as many machines as you want.

There are literally dozens of each kind. I suggest taking some time and reading through this thread. You should also post the specifications of your laptop because a modern game might not work well if it's a low-end machine.

My favorite racing game is Need for Speed Pay Back

You need to install these 3 main platforms of gaming where you can buy/install the games you own.

    Origin

    Steam

    Uplay

Don't forget Twitch if you're an Amazon Prime subscriber in certain countries, due to the monthly freebies. Battle.net is still out there as well, IIRC.

And yes, the specific hardware will matter greatly. We don't know whether you've got a low-power dual-core CPU and no dedicated graphics hardware at all, vs. some monster "desktop replacement" with much much more computational power. At least Steam refunds are a thing, if you buy something and immediately find out that it really doesn't work well at all for you.

Also check out the MSI GT75 Owners Lounge, if you want to discuss with people who own the same machine. There are lots of super technical and very helpful people in there.

    Randy,

For me Steam (steampowered.com) is my preferred games marketplace or store. I tend to check them every week or two on the Friday/weekends for any sales. Steam runs lots of sales, especially on the weekends.

Racing games: my favorite racing game is Assetto Corsa. I use it more of a “hot lap” sim where I race by myself and try to improve my lap times, down to a fraction of a second once I get good at it. I like the physics engine it has.

First person shooter: my favorite is Hitman (2016). It’s not really a FPS though. It more strategy and precision and execution, pardon the pun. Hitman games are historically tend to be tough as nails and you need to be okay with restarting a mission like 19 times as you go for perfection. It’s not everyone’s tastes.

First person shooter: right now I am also enjoying Far Cry 5. This one is set in Trump America, but you are the antagonist. You can play this one how ever you want to play it. It can be more gun and run. Or you can play it stealth like, if you want. I play it both ways. Plus it has cars and trucks you can drive. There are planes and copters to fly. You basically just run around blowing stuff up and freeing hostages.

First person shooter: another fun one is Grand Theft Auto V. Another fun one is Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Another fun one is Deus Ex (any of them), it’s more of a stealth game.

If you want something different try Life Is Strange (first season). It’s 5 episodes (levels). It’s a narrative story of a young woman and it’s more of a story board game. The premise is you can rewind time to change the events as the story unfolds and to change how the game ends. It uses the rewind time developed on the FPS game Remember Me (action game, also fun) but more fully develops the rewind time mechanics. This is a game more for people into story and narration than action.

If you want a quick puzzle game Rime was fun. But short. It’s like 5-7 hours to play through it. You solve puzzles on a deserted island with ancient ruins.

The good thing about Steam is they let you do returns. I think it’s like 2 hours of game play and 14 days since you bought it and you can return it for refund.

I just want to also recommend GOG. You can get lots of old classics for great prices on there and they really go the extra mile to make sure they run on modern machines. I always buy a game on GOG if I have the option.

Steam is my second choice. Vast selection of games. I’ve been a steam user since 2004.

As far as actual games, the list never ends... but lately I’ve been sinking inordinate amounts of time into The Witcher 3 (which you can get for $20 with all the expansions on GOG probably 2 or 3 times a year, it’s a great deal). If I had to recommend one game right now that would be it.

Edit: I think you can get a GOG key for Witcher 3: GOTY Edition for like $22 on G2A. I assume that means someone bought tons of keys when it was $20 and are now selling them for a profit. Some people warn against those bargain key retailers, but I've never had issues so do with that what you will...

"Witcher 3" is excellent, if you're willing to make a substantial time investment and you like action RPGs. Something to note that if you buy it on Steam -- one, it's fairly frequently on sale, and two -- the last few times it's been on sale, they've charged the *exact same price* for the base game and for the GOTY version (base + both expansions, and the expansions are quite good), so obv. get the GOTY version.

Games I've been playing recently and liked included --

Yakuza 0 -- story-heavy brawler w/ a fair bit of exploration; combines very serious main plot with seriously bonkers side stories and a gazillion mini-games. Note -- controller recommended. Do not get if you hate cutscenes, or if you're an obsessive completionist with little time, or if you're easily offended by a lot of female NPCs being based on adult video stars (not joking, although in-game there's nothing more prurient than bikini videos).

Streets of Rogue -- 2D... well, "chaos simulator" is probably an accurate description. Early access, hitting release fairly soon. Supports local and online co-op for more chaos. Lots of 'mutators' to affect gameplay; for instance,. you can set it up so that every NPC has a rocket launcher and that every map is also a war zone between Soldiers and Cannibals and that all corpses explode, if you find the vanilla game not sufficiently chaotic.

Tyranny -- fairly intriguing, lore-heavy, small-party-based combat-heavy 2D top down RPG, real-time with pause. Seems to have a lot of branching decisions to make. Do not get if you hate reading, though, or if you dislike morally ambiguous decisions or insist on always being a Lawful Good Humanitarian.

Angels Fall First -- still early-access and not terribly n00b-friendly (needs a tutorial, for instance), but interesting objective-based FPS (either multiplayer or offline, supports bots either way) in science-fiction setting. Supports both ground maps and space maps; in space maps, you're piloting craft (maybe capital ships, maybe fighters, bombers, dropships etc) a lot but there's also infantry combat during boarding actions and the like (e.g. board enemy capital ship in order to kill the pilot, blow up the engine core, etc). Hampered by very low player count -- if you want to play vs. people rather than offline and you don't have friends to join you, you pretty much need to pop into Discord and see whether a match is being planned. Missing lag compensation, which is being worked on and should improve online play once it's in. Might be worth following.

Nice - I gotta try that one. Hot Pursuit was the very first game I broken in my AW 17 R5 with. :) Not super demanding I know, but it still blew me away, having not played any games whatsoever since about 2012. I really enjoyed it, except maybe the time trail events. Dropping those spike strips and so forth, mmm, really enjoyed that, hehe.

A game I recommend - Assassins Creed Origins, surprised no one mentioned it. Open world, can play it more action or more stealthily. I have no idea how long it will take to complete. I am blown away, I must have played it for 60 hours now and it looks like I am not even halfway through (but I do enjoy just playing with local soldiers and doing all side missions, etc.). And the environment - I just did not realize that this sort of huge game world existed in so many games today. I mean, the first time you get to Alexandria, I was thinking, ok, so there's a few city blocks... no way, it IS a city. I have no idea how they build these environments, I mean, I guess there's more tools than I know of to help automate some of it but man, to me, I would have to guess it would take a hundred 3d modelers working full-time for a year. Only downside is it started crashing after about 40 hours in, but I think running in borderless window mode has rectified that. (seems to be a recurring problem for other people also at about 35-40 hours in) I only got it because it was on sale and I sort of liked the idea of the first Assassins Creed way back on Xbox (although it did seem repetitive, the basic point of jumping from high places and assassinating high profile targets really jived with me). So glad I did though.

I thought I'd just play CS and the usual FPS titles, but man, while Battlefield 1 is also awesome, I really dig these single player adventure games. Extra yummy at 4K, too. :)

Also got Shadow of Tomb Raider for free - I never played it, wasn't really my storyline, but hell yeah that game is a beast also - I just don't like that some of the puzzles are actually challenging enough and take a long time to visualize because you have to move around the environment a lot and die often to figure it out - I resorted to looking up the solution quite a few times, then it was like, oh yeah, obvious, but not really so obvious. If you enjoy a challenge and dying 20-30 times though to figure it out, then it's great. It does have an easier mode, I played it through in normal (it paints the walls and fences and stuff with a bit of white paint, very natural looking, and helps to clue you to where Lara can jump or attach to), maybe the easy mode made it more obvious, I don't know.

You may want to look at Origin Premier Access bec. for 24$ a year you'll get access to all triple A games offered on their store . I think it's a good value if you don't like collecting games that you will only buy because it's on sale and you'll never gonna-play because you lack time just like me :(.

Nice, I hadn't seen that, only the season pass stuff. I know what you mean - I bought a "pack" of Need for Speed and some other titles, but only one NFS so far is somewhat current (but I did love it), some of the others, look like they were from 2004, they don't even run correctly. (sale was a good price though, $20 I think) I will definitely check out the annual access route.

The expensive one is 99 a year w/c have full early access to upcoming games while the cheaper subscriptions only have 10hr. trial. https://www.origin.com/irl/en-us/store/origin-access. If you're looking just to play games regardless of the year a game is released then the cheaper price is more beneficial.
