News on mobile 8600?

Hey guys,
What is the latest news on the new DX10 nvidia 8600 mobile gpu? What do you guys think of this card and is it worth waiting for over the 7900gs? Any thoughts appreciated.

 

I dont think there is really any new news on it yet 'cept it will be out soon.
Is it worth the wait? For Direct X10 Shader model 4.0 it is, for performance vs. A 7900gs probably no, but u cant tell as its unreleased. Also it will be awhile before DX10/shader4 games as not even the vista drivers work correctly yet. Sierra's Crisis wil probably be the big one. Dont expect developers to make tons of games DX10 vista optimized when a majority of gamers have DX9 cards on XP. Dont wait too long as there's always something better around the corner and u might never buy anything by then. I heard the the high end mobile Geforce 8 cards should be out by the year's end once they switch to a smaller fabrication process as they run too hot for current notebooks, though it hasnt stopped low end Geforce 8s and the mid ones too like the 8600 ur talking about. Another thing though I know about Geforce 8 series, besides supporting DirectX 10 and shader model 4, they can run HDR and Anti-aliasing effects at the same time as can the Ati x1000 series and above, the current Geforce 7000 series cant, I know cuz i play Oblivion which can use both those effects and find it annoying that I cant turn them both on at the same time. Its probably a good thing as it would affect my performance a great deal otherwise. Oblivion is as demanding as it is beautiful. Rock on, hope my little info helped even a little.

 

Where can one find info on the mobile 8600?

Might it not be a viable plan to skip the 1st generation of DX10 gfx cards?

I was thinking that by the time DX10 software is wide spread and DX10 exclusive, the hardware to run it will have come a good ways and be cheaper to boot. (Pun not intended)

It will be out in June, maybe. The 8600 will have performances similar (if not better) to a 7900GS Go: it will be a real good card for 15.4" laptops.
Perhaps it's worth waiting also for the Mobility X2600 which will be build on 65nm chips (instead of 80nm ones, as the 8600).

 

Also the unified shaders will make it perform better than a 7900gs.

 

Even if the 8600 was a dx 9.0 card it would be better than a 7900 gs. Very similar though.

 

I have a small question that probably fit in this topic so i dont have to open a new one for it. There are some asus computers with the same price but only with a differend videocard. That is:

-ATI Mobility Radeon X2300 w 128MB vram & DirectX10
or
-ATI Mobility Radeon X1700 512/1024Mb

Which one would be better? I gues the x2300 is the newer one because i cant find it on the forum?

 

The x1700 is way better. About twice as fast. The X2300 is not DirectX10.

Is it better that the nVidia GO 7900GS?

 

No it is not. The X2300 is a major disappointment for all of us I think. It is not DX 10, it is just a newer version of the X1400.

 

And just in case you were asking about whether the X1700 is faster than the 7900GS, it is not. The 7900GS is at least 33% faster than the X1700.

My opinion rests with the rest of the thread on the X2300 issue. It's not DX10, it's just a refreshed version of an ATI DX9 card. The way ATI marketed it is supposed to fool you into thinking it's a new generation of DX10 cards - don't be fooled, it's not. The X1700 is twice as powerful as the X2300.
