Anyone have any speculations as to what the next big MMORPG is going to be? Something that'll kill WOW, and hopefully take a lot more skill to play.
The only thing I've seen so far that might have a shot is the new lucas arts/bioware old republic mmorpg that's coming out... but most lucas arts titles end up being mostly hype and then die after awhile.
-
Duno about WoW killers, but The Old Republic, Star Trek Online and Stargate Worlds all have large fan bases.
As far as longevity, I would say a toss up between ToR and STO -
-
it all depends on if they gimp it becuase too many people complain or leave it alone.
STO sounds awesome, but current reads seem to have it as dummied down a bit from the original ideas...and while it may help actually get it to market, and the money in the bank at the start, if it gets dumbed down too much, the player base will go elsewhere. Same can be said with ToR...
i played the original SWO when it came out...was very difficult to do certain things, was fun, but at time challenging. too many crybabies complained and then they changed too much and made it way too easy for certain things and ended up actually destroying the game for al the people that worked hard for the xp and other stuff...
difficult to say....seems as if FPS's are the king of the hill right now....i just dont play them as it is... -

How about the next Big MMO that blizzard has had under production since wow came out lol, It's going to shatter even WOW since it's the same team, it's next gen, it's going to ruin people's lives again lol....

I like a good fps now and then, but I haven't seen any for the PC that I'm interested in (unless you consider fallout3 a fps). I love resistance 2 for PS3, but on the flip side hate Halo and dislike COD. I really wanted to try crysis, but I want to stay as far away from serucom as possible.
I plan on giving the old republic a shot, but if they find a way to completely ruin it like they did with galaxies it'll be a short lived experience.
I played WOW for a long time (quit and rejoined multiple times due to not being able to find anything else to play) but i never felt any sense of accomplishment playing. The pvp is extremely weak, especially world pvp, Raids are a cakewalk if you're not playing with incompetent people (which are harder to find than you'd think), and it just felt like a giant grind fest. -
-
If you include any game that can be played cooperatively online as a MMO, then my money is on Diablo3.
-
PVP has always been a selling point for rpgs for me, and diablo has always had weak pvp. Going around slaughtering innocent players and then sitting on their corpses is much more entertaining than beating on monsters that never stood a chance. -

Star Wars: The Old Republic is shaping up to be a big game, WoW killer? Probably not, but it's probably going to be very popular. I for one may even enter the world of MMORPG's once again.
-
-
(i have yet to get really into WoW simply cause of the simplicity of it and the cartoonish look)
-
But again that brings about another point that I don't like about WOW and unfortunately a lot of MMORPGS are starting to follow this trend: There's no real reward for killing people/no real penalty for dieing. I miss back in the old days of runescape where if you killed someone they dropped all but 3 pieces of gear...made people more competitive and eliminated the carebear nature of today's current rpgs.
Now I'm not saying people should lose all their gear for dying (this would be slightly absurd with the complexity of the new games), but losing a piece of gear or some gold/currency would drive up the want of pvping. -
-
Many of the original WoW development team left Blizzard to form Carbine Studios which is working for NCSoft on an MMO. -
The game I just started looking at is Fallen Earth. Haven't heard much about it though other than it's PVP is restricted to certain zones but in those zones PVP is open and death incurs a stat-loss.
I'm not a total fan of futuristic/FPS MMOs but open PVP with a penalty for death has me interested. -
also in L2, the death penalty is a pain in the a$$ to get your XP back. when you get up in levels, the implimented 4% blows chunks if you can not get anyone to rez you with a spell or scroll...talk about grind to get it back...lol
but hey, as i said, most companies have dumbdowned things cause too many people complained about it...i liked the older days of L2 where you dropped something period if you were red...there was no augmenting and the like. -
with the new expansion lich king. -
Next big MMO? Haven't heard of one yet. -

There are a few up in the horizon for 2009 release, some of them are quite hyped.
Games like Aion, EarthRise, Fallen Earth, Mortal Online, The Secret World and Guild Wars 2.
If any of these will be p2p and will have game sold in markets (not just digital download) then a success is almost guaranteed. -
-
-
erepublik will kill all mmorpgs
-
I'm waiting patiently for Aion, seems to b getting very good reviews so far on asian market and to b released na/eu this year. After that I'm waiting for blade&soul few yrs after that and guild wars 2.

from the game developer grapevine:
Square-Enix has been working on their new MMORPG to be the next big thing... might even have the Final Fantasy name with it.
I will be at E3 this year, hopefully we will get more details then. -
To OP: It seems like you like open-world PvP balanced w/ PvE and a "hardcore" environment. I hate to break it to you but that is not really the mindset of a casual MMO'er and a large WOW type game probably won't ever suit you. Look at Mortal Online (in Dev). It seems like a game you might enjoy.
-
Cabal online beats WoW pvp wise, one of the more dynamic pvp systems in an mmo imho.
The game is just....fun heh
you should try it (its free) -
-
People that are against open PVP totally ignore the benefits that PKs bring to an MMORPG community. Having people to hate in a game forces you to look for people you can trust and bonds formed with people for safety and protection are stronger than those formed for greed in order to aquire that next best piece of loot.
Think of it like this: who are you going to be tighter with the buddy that saved your life in the war or the buddy that bought you a beer in a bar one night.
Fact of the matter is anti-PVP people do not want to play MMOs...they really want their MMOs to be single player or small group games because for the most part they want to be left alone and only group when they feel it's to their benefit. -
I'd love to see an XP penalty system combined with an open world PVP based ranking/reward system. Player looting isn't really required. -
-
Yes there are those that like small groups and soloing almost all the time, but I don't think those are the main people that are anti-pvp.
I'm mainly looking at STO, and possibly Champions Online... other than that, any intriguing MMO that comes out that isn't centered around PvP is something I'd look at. -
Star Wars Galaxies pre CU was better if not superior to WoW. It was a very advanced game and everything was based on skill, no lvl's. 30+ professions and the ability to mix and match made your charector totally unique. It had player runed cities, pure crafting professions, etc. it was ahead of its time. Mostly pvp though but if you watch any star wars movies almost all of it is pvp.
But hey SOE tried to make it easy like WoW but then 90% of their player base quit litarally over night.
Currently waiting for SWG EMU which will bring it back.
if your not into PvP go check out Lord of the Rings online. 99% of it is like pve and you feel you are actually in a story line. -
It feels like a budget version of Fallout 3, except some of the NPC's running around you are players. While that may sound kind of cool... it isn't. This puppy needs a lot of work. -
well Perfect world's a sorta fun MMO :/ when you die you start off losing 5% of your exp and it keeps going down as you do more and more of the cultivation quests ones for your spritual side. At level 30 you can start pvping and when you pvp there is no level restriction you can kill anyone you wish so long as their not in a safe zone. There is a penality for PvP though if you do it you start off witha 1% chance to drop 1 item and it goes up from there. like if you're the type to just camp outside of cities and kill people if someone finally kills you, you'll be horribly hurt. Next big one :/ i doubt it the stuff's way too expensive marriage and such are very expensive skills cost loads of gold. And at around lvl 80 you have to start grinding nonstop as the quests dry up. So i'll probably leave before lvl 80 as i don't like grinding i don't plaly MMOs to grind.
Also for the PvP side of it :/ i don't know i play on teh PvE server my class has a melee penality and considering the tank classes in the game can jump forward ~30m at one swoop if they so wish i'm going to die.
I was into Regnum Online for awhile Fanbase is slowly increasing. And WoW will never die. There will always be those addicts out there feeding the devs their precious money. -
I just checked out Mortal Online. My internet's really slow here, so I read some of the articles while the gameplay video loaded. I loved what I read about the gamestyle, attributes, and the world itself... and then I watched the preview.
The graphics were atrocious (I know it's still a beta, but you can only bring the graphics so far from beta to final product). Also the combat seemed very sluggish. It looked like I was watching someone play a dumbed down version of oblivion(oblivion style fighting is fine for pve, but way too slow for me for pvp). There were at least 2-4 seconds in between attacks, and I thought fighting in WOW was slow. -
Aion.

Startrek and Stargate online
Im hoping they will be great! -
there arent any mmorpgs that will succeed wow anytime soon. theres only so much of one type of game. thats why I like playing mmofps or mmorts, mix up your games and youll have fun. although fps is my favorite sort of game. I enjoy killing people fast with bullets, instead of with knifes and swords. ;x
cheers -
-
Ok that sounds awesome. Very highspeed imo. However, having only 4 class options might seriously gimp this game.
edit: Just watched the beta teaser trailer, and this game looks beautiful. I can't wait to see what it'll look like close to release, there's a good chance I'll be playing this one. -
if i could wish for 1 single MMORPG...i would wish for a Ultime Online with up to date graphics and no carebear land.
i really really miss a game that requires pure skill to win fights. i miss all the times newbs tried to jump me 5-7 ppl against me and i would put a stompin on all of them, alone. *sigh* i feel like al bundy talkin about his high school football days...

If you are looking for a PvP MMO, why not play Warhammer (WAR)?
Everything from the scenarios to the open realm versus realm endgame sound like they would be just what you are looking for. Absolutely epic battles too. There really isn't a more rewarding PvP experience. -
Is their any Free - To - Play Mech Games either than Exteel?
I am gonna get CS:S + Garry's Mod I am soooooo excited to get GMOD. -

You will regret it... it makes your life < GMOD
