Electronic Arts announced details of the next three expansions for Battlefield 3 at an event in San Francisco last night.
The first of the newly announced content packs is titled Battlefield 3: Close Quarters and will be released in June. The expansion will feature infantry-focused "vertical" gameplay with four new indoor maps and 10 new weapons that can also be used in the original version of the game.
In line with Battlefield 3's timed exclusivity deal with Sony, Close Quarters will be exclusive to the PlayStation 3 for one week, before launching for other platforms.
The next expansion--Battlefield 3: Armored Kill--has no current release window, but EA said it would feature new vehicles and the biggest maps in the franchise's history.
Finally, EA announced a third new expansion titled Battlefield 3: End Game, but gave no further details.
The publisher also announced it would be introducing customizable available-for-rent servers for console versions of Battlefield 3. EA already offers servers for rent for PC copies of Battlefield 3.
Last month, EA revealed a major patch for the shooter, including general, vehicle, weapon, weapon accessory, and game type updates. According to the publisher, Battlefield 3 has sold through 10 million copies to customers as of February 2012.

how can EA justify calling these "expansion packs"? these are map packs. nothing more.
-

Exclusivity to PS3 for one week? What's up with that? Not that I care, one week won't make a lick of difference to me. Do they think PC gamers will run out and buy a PS3 just to play the new expansion?
They need to bring back something like a carrier rush-type level.
Indoor vertical maps... it will be Metro x 20 everyone pinned inside stairwells.
BF3: End Game? Whatever. -
What about that huge patch they promised us?
Cant say i heard much about it. D; -
If this doesn't classify as an expansion, what does? -
Stupid...
I paid for a complete game. Not a stripped 'base model' game...

I dunno, but I'll admit that bf3 has been pretty dry. I'm getting pretty bored of console gaming. Can't wait to get into the heavier PC gaming scene. creed 3 and borderlands 2 will be my future laptops first challenges. Lolololol
-
I'll hope for the best and play my chances that all 3 DLCs will be free

Reminds me of this.
-
Close Quarters does not interest me at all. I want new game modes, like a carrier map like in BF2 (Iron Gator?). I liked most of the Special Forces maps, they just never got much love. That's part of the problem with expansions, you get a limited audience compared to the full game.
-
Sweet jesus that trailer looked awesome!!
-
The other expansion, which is the opposite, is one I'm looking forward to. -
-
Bah. I won't get excited about any DLC if it means they drag their feet on the mega-patch. Also, I don't find anything exciting about that trailer at all. Slow motion projectile and explosion spamming does not a wallet-opener make.
-
Maybe I'll just wait a year and buy the bundled edition for $10 or something.
-
sick map trailer, looks really promising...
Battlefield 3 Close Quarters -

Battlefield is to me all about big maps with a lot of oppertunities in them, I really think that is the core of the game and also the way Battlefield differentiate from games like CoD and MoH.
I will certainly skip this DLC. -
Unfortunately for me.
I'm most likely to get it for the new weapon assignments and use them in vanilla bf3.
Also, use them for awhile before DICE decides to overnerf them. -
Is MW3 like that too? I haven't played either but I was thinking BF3 cause it was "more real" but now with all these extra $ for DLCs and from what I heard having to log in to this thing in order to even play the game was bad enough. Maybe MW3 wouldn't be a bad choice anymore?
-
i actually like playing battlefield on smaller maps every once and a while, especially with the destruction, it makes it so much more dynamic that mw3. in cod if theres a bottle neck you are screwed, in bf just blow a hole in the wall problem solved
.

You guys realize this is almost exactly what the expansions were like in Battlefield 2? I'm really not seeing what everyone's getting so bent out of shape about.
BF2 Special Forces added new maps, new vehicles and weapons, in closer quarters and more infantry-based combat. The two smaller booster packs, Euro Force and Armored Fury, also added a handful of maps and vehicles, no weapons.
Either way, these look to add a hell of a lot more than CoD map packs, and we don't even know how they're going to be priced. Sometimes I think people actually look for reasons to get angry. -
They weren't released 2 months after the original game...
-
So you're technically right; it wasn't as soon after initial release...but let's be honest, it's not a huge difference. -
Original Game + B2K had enough maps, its not like they offered us a half game or something, dont see why everyone is getting so angry. And this is coming in June, how is that 2months.(i dont consider B2K a DLC, almost everyone who bought the game in Oct/Nov got the Special Edition with B2K)
I am probably gonna skip the close quarters map pack. Not fond of indoor maps -
-
I*m looking forward to all the expansions. The CQ Trailer looked good, expecially that penthouse style map. I think it's a nice move to include more indoor-type maps, seeing how popular Metro is with some players.
Alot of people will be dissatisfied with anything new that is added to the game. It seems the new logic for gamers are that if a game gets expansions/dlc after release it was originally incomplete upon release, something which is ridiculous in this case.
Haters gonna hate, and all that -
Well release day DLC is a sham, and I don't care how they spin it. If it's available release day it should be part of the game, period. In the case of BF3 it was pretty much the case anyhow since if you pre-ordered you could only get the Limited Edition which included the Karkand expansion.
I am ok with maps/expansions added later. I like it, actually, but charge a reasonable price. $15 is too much. The full game can be had for about $30 now. Should be less than $10. -
Where does it say they're going to be $15?
-
-
-
Very likely. Or 3 months after release, 50% or they randomly give out a limited amount of keys in random forums or sites.
Also, did you know if you knife the current EA community manager and steal his dogtag.
DICE will mail you his dogtag with a letter of thanks.
