Hi All,
I have recently purchased a HP DV4 1241TX laptop with T6400 2 Ghz processor, 3GB RAM, 320 GB Hard Disc and an Nvidia 9200M GS graphics card.
HP says it is a 512 MB Dedicated Graphics Card where as in several forums I find that 9200M GS is a 256MB Card. Please could anyone suggest if this is a 512MB or a 256MB GPU. I am running Vista Home Basic and the Nvidia Control Panel shows it has 512 MB Dedicated memory. I am confused and worried as I paid for a 512MB GPU and not a 256MB one. Please help.

512MB and 256MB doesn't make much of a different. Because 9200M GS is a 128bit Buswidth GPU. Which mean if you have 512MB, it can't fully utilize all 512MB of the GPU due to the Bus Width.
Download GPU-Z. It is a software designed to read every detail of a GPU. So, you can know your GPU feature and abilities with it. I will provide download links here.

Extra information for you. DDR 3 is better than DDR 2 very much.
For example:
Nvidia Geforce 9600M GS 256MB DDR 3 beats Nvidia Geforce 9600M GS 512MB DDR 2.
If your GPU is DDR 3, you don't have to worry it is 512MB or 256MB. -

Thank you all for the info, especially dark silver for all the details. Earlier I was using a celeron 1.6 laptop with only an intel IGP (950 serise). So I could hardly ever play any games. Although I am not too much into gaming, I would like to be able to play some games like NFS carbon & undercover, Fifa 09 etc. and play movies on this laptop. Would this GPU be able to support this kind of an activity? Please could you guys advise.
Laptop Specs:

3 GB RAM (DDR II)
320 GB HDD (5400 rpm)

To acxyz,
9200M GS is a 3rd class GPU according to some website. Due to it has 64bit Bus Width(my fault for telling you it is 128bit last time).
It can play videos well.
Gaming, it can play many games(newly release/3D intensive) but not really in a very good FPS(frame rate per second).
You can try overclock it though. However, try that at your own risk.
The link TinderBox provided is great(about overclock and driver), http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=299785
OK. If you want to play safe with stable and great performance, here is the solution.
Download Nvidia Geforce Driver(latest) from Nvidia Official website and install the driver. Currently, it was v186.03. Download link(choose your OS and GPU model), http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
Get you DirectX updated. Download link, http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A-9B6652CD92A3&displaylang=en -

Bus width and memory amount are not directly linked in that way darksilver. The 2900XT had a 512bit memory bus but would see no benefit for 1GB of ram. The HD4850 is a 256bit card and getting 1GB of ram on the card can actually help.

Hi,
Thank U all for helping. The links provided by Dark Silver & Tinderbox were informative. What I understand is the 9200M GS is ok for playing games as long as I stick to medium to low details. I am not too much of a serious gammer as I would mainly use the laptop for running office applications, surf for long hours so a decent battery life would be helpful which this laptop seems to deliver so far and for playing music and movies regularly. I would like to play games only once in a while so it's good to know the games will run...albeit in medium to low details...but I just wonder what is the point in offering 9200M GS with 512 MB dedicated memory if it won't be able to use all of it. -

I have the 9300m GS and I really like it. I can play Call Of Duty 4 very vell on a resolution on 1200 X 768.
-
I have a nvidia 105m, I think its on par with a 9300m.
That said, i only play racing games.
And both Grid and NFS Prostreet work well.
Ive only tried it at 800x600 for both games.
But on Grid i made damage effects on high.
And car detail on prostreet on high.
I will be posting the exact configurations in a week or two, when i do my review of my laptop.
But it runs them both at a constant 30fps. -
Does the windows system rating mean much as far as GPU performance is concerned? Mine is 3.4 for this card which seems to be the aveg. for most users.
Also, my driver is not the latest for this card. On Nvidia's website I found version 186.81 which I have not yet installed as I am not sure if it will be any good....I have seen some people getting into trouble after installing new drivers... -
The Windows system should be ignored most of the time. I recommend using 3DMark06 for a fairly accurate score for your system.
For drivers, I've always been a fan of the ones at LaptopVideo2Go especially the Dox Optimized versions. Here's a list of the most recent ones: http://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/159-19x-series-geforce-driver-releases/
But there are some new drivers released by nVidia which are supposed to be pretty good: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=412578
