    Hey guys.

I am looking to buy a new thermal paste soon.

I am using Zalman STG-2 now and it was good. unfortunately i tried a different method but it gave me bad temps and i have very small amount left in the tube and i am not sure it will be enough for cpu and gpu

I ordered gelid extreme from ebay but it will be shipped after 3-4 weeks

so i searched almost all the stores in my country and only the noctua NT-H1 is available.

made a search on google but found nothing about it for notebooks.

Is it better than zalman stg-2 ? if it is better. any recommended method?

My CPU is core i7 4710hq and gpu is GTX 850m

And i have another stupid question :D. How tight should be the heatsink mounted? because i over tight it and i don't know if that's wrong

    Thank you

If you're feeling brave and want the best temp decreases, look at Coollaboratory Liquid Pro/Ultra. You'll get decent decreases and it's not noticeably more expensive than other TIM - especially when you consider how much coverage a small amount of it will provide. On the other hand you have to be careful when applying it so it's worth taking time and applying the paste with the CPU removed from the socket.

I use Noctua NT-H1 in my Macbook Air but I'm going to be switching to CLP/U in three weeks when I flush out the dust that accumulates and repaste the CPU while I have the cover removed. It's OK but I didn't see siginificant reductions in temperature.

You shouldn't be able to overtighten the heatsink on a notebook. It can only go down so far and stops. Not like on a desktop that frequently you can control how much you clamp down on the CPU.

you did good on the tightening, no worries.

I use Noctua NT-H1 with great success. I bought it couple years ago and it's still good :D Actually I'm about to use it again in a week, lol.

there was a thread on here some years ago about comparing thermal compounds and the Noctua didn't come towards the top. However it lasts pretty long time without hardening/cracking so its fine.

STG-2 isn't bad...I know that someone here uses it on an Alienware M18x R1 with 2960XM... I would try again with it... Gelid will be excellent but STG should work as a temporary solution...

More pressure is never a bad thing on the mobile platform. Usually dot/line method is recommended here (NBR), but plenty of people are spreading paste across the globe and no one have any issue.

typically <5C core difference is normal, 7 is a little high, but not worrying~

I would use the line method.. Just a small line through the middle of the cpu die is what I have used always...

It is a very good TIM for a bare-die CPU (no IHS). All mobile CPUs have bare-die. The results can be seen here:

i repasted with the noctua 10 minutes ago using small line method and i am noticing more than 8 degrees different but i am getting temp spikes "10 degrees"

the thermal paste is so smooth that i wanted to spread it, it took me 3 times to make sure the size and line is good, and in the 4th time i was afraid i lose all the paste amount so i just used the weirdy rice grain size method :D

You know the simplest way to lower temps? Raise the back of your laptop with some books etc and temps will go down 5-10C... LOL..
