I know this has been a very long debate about this topic and I THINK that I may have found a solution to check if it bothers you personally.
Download a movie from whatever source you like, like youtube or movie trailers or whatever you like.
When you open it, it should automatically be set to be a 100% size (I use VLC Player but you can use pretty much anything you like)
Just resize the video up and down and see if you can really see a big difference in resolution. The result, I believe, should be like playing in non native resolutions.
I could be wrong in this, please correct me if I am.

You are correct, however the effects of a non-native resolution are IMO most visible on fonts, not on videos or games.
Youtube videos often have bad quality, to do your test it is important to use a high-quality video, such as a movie trailer.
