Are there any RPGs out there that are based on real time combat. I don't mean like Fallout 3/borderlands where its an Fps, i mean something similar to TES IV or Fable.

I was looking around a bit and i saw these games called Risen and rise of the Argonauts. Has anyone played these?

Never heard of those two games, but I believe dragon age is not turn based.

Risen does seem to have pretty good reviews though. Heres a link to the demo if you want to try it first.

I think by turn based he means games like Dragon Age, Diablo, Baldur's Gate, stuff like that. If you look at the games he mentioned, you actually control your own attacks and stuff, the comp doesn't attack for you.

And I think you might like the Gothic series or the Witcher.

Don't write off first-person just because it looks kinda like a shooter. There are some great first-person RPGs, such as Fallout 3, Deus Ex and VtM Bloodlines.

For third-person (some old, some new):

    New(ish):
Torchlight (awesome game, get it, only 20 bucks on Steam)
    Mass Effect (& sequel)
    Dragon Age
    Neverwinter Nights II (and expansions)
    The Witcher Special Edition

    Old:
    Anachronox
    Knights of the Old Republic
    KOTORII: The Sith Lords
    Planescape: Torment
    Baldur's Gate (& sequels/expansions)
Arcanum: Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura
    Icewind Dale II
    Fallout

Why not include NVN 1 with the old? Oblivion as well.

I could never get Arcanum to work properly, unfortunately.

There's Dungeon Siege as well, with fewer RPG elements however.

PS: Was Arcanum turn based? I can't remember.

Brand new game, Divinity 2: Ego Draconis...most awesome. Also Risen is a good choice.

@ synaesthetic, the majority (not all) of these games, while technically can be played in real time, are generally considered and best played as semi-turn based, or pause and play types...I don't thinks that is what he was after.

    New(ish):
Torchlight (awesome game, get it, only 20 bucks on Steam)
    Mass Effect (& sequel)
    Dragon Age
    Neverwinter Nights II (and expansions)
    The Witcher Special Edition

    Icewind Dale II

Planescape: Torment, every RPGer should play this at least once.

Ah the old Dungeon Siege games. Too bad they don't remake them. Although a lot of people didn't like it because you felt like a manager rather than a combatant.

The only title that deserves to be mentioned is dragon age, a really superb rpg, rest of them are old games with horribile graphics, or new ones with decent graphics but epic fail engine, like divinity II (do not try that game, it epicly fails!)

i think torchlight was far better then the dungeon siege games.

i cant speak for dragon age but ive heard it has loads and loads and loads of cut scenes. I love a good story and a cut scene here or there but not to many. then it just removes you from the game play and makes it feel like your watching a movie rather then playing a game.

all im saying is if you dont like to many cutscenes and possibly pausing the game all the time to set up your attacks you may not like dragon age.

    Gush much? lol

Torchlight is very different from the Dungeon Siege games though, both of which have their own unique areas.

And ultimately, what you like in a game boils down very much to personal preference. And I liked both Torchlight and Dungeon Siege.

Big fan of NWN, since the storylines were quite interesting. Oblivion got a little too unraveled for my taste,

Dragon Age and Neverwinter Nights 2 still use a turn based system though, but if you play it on an easy difficulty you can usually let the AI run the rest of the party in combat so you never have to pause and issue commands.

They're certainly not like elder scrolls or fable, combat is basically click spot to move, click enemy, click ability.

My friend currently owns the witcher, enhanced edition, and i've seen him play at the very start. I thought its a turn based game? Because all he had to do was point and click.

I'm asking for non-fps games because i already have played many of the fps ones like borderlands and i kinda quit on fallout 3 already lol.

And yeah by turn based i mean you control your own attacks, move around evade all that stuff. Not like the runescape stuff :p

    Edit:
I have played diablo 2 for about 4 years in high school and i have quit a long time ago so yeah.. no more d2 suggestions xD

And i currently have dragon age. Its meh but i dont like the turn based nor the multiple party control aspect of it. A single character, like fable is what suits me best.

I think you and I have a different definition for turn-based. The Witcher certainly is not turn-based RPG, nor is Dragon Age: Origins. Turn-based would be like the older Final Fantasy games where one side or character takes a "turn" and then the enemy takes their shot, and keeps swapping out.. Witcher is live action, but combo attacks, DAO is live or can be paused but enemies can attack when they want, granted the attack or skill wanted to use is not on cooldown.

Anyway, from this thread I have an interest in Risen, so maybe you should check that out too, same people as Gothic though I've never played any of those games either.
