I've seen it done. I know it's possible. And I want to do it. I should have done more homework before I bought my computer (see specs in signature) because now I want a better GPU. So I ask you, is it possible to replace MY GPU? I assume it would be different, because mine runs Optimus Technology and has the button to switch between Optimus and the IGP. So I really want to know if I can do this. It runs Starcraft 2, Mass Effect 2, Bad Company 2, and WoW all great, but not good enough for me. I can only run Bad Company 2 reeallly smoothly on low, but decent on med. I wanna run SC2 on ultra, WoW on ultra, Mass Effect 2 1920x1080, so on and so forth. So I'm planning on getting probably the GT 425m, but I could just as easily treat myself to the 480m.
so let me know!

You have to know which socket (MXM) your card is and find a compatible replacement.
you can't have a very strong card with it (not even GTX460M).
Max is maybe the 335GT -
damn, that wouldnt even be worth the effort >.>
thanks! -

If you're talking about replacing the gpu for the computer in your sig it's not replaceable it's integrated into the mother board on that model.
-
wow. i totally knew that too.
hooray for JT wasting thread space!
i might as well face the fact that im not gonna be satisfied until i spend 5 or 6 grand on the best possible laptop i can get. -
that's hardly true.
If you're really willing to spend just get a m17X with Crossfire 5870's. -
you can get a sager8690 with the 470m for 1500+ on xoticpc.com
-
lol. More like $1500-2000, especially once SB hits and quad-cores are less sucky for notebooks, as well as the HD 6000M series of course. And it's nothing to beat yourself up over. We're here to help.

My laptop can run ME2 @ 1080p pretty well. And it is practically the same as yours.
-
I reckon 30 FPS in ME2. But ME2 is not the most demanding out of those games.
-
But my point is why can't JT run the game at the same settings as me when we both have very similar laptop specs? Is it a driver issue?
-
oh no i run it at 1080p perfectly fine, it just runs a BIT smoother at lower res. i cant stand tiny eye hiccups
-
These are few and far between on my laptop. Most of the time it is perfectly playable and smooth.
-
The 5650 is probably... let's say 20% faster than the 330M, so that's to be expected.

Since you have Optimus, can do a GTX460 DIY ViDock x1.Opt for ~US$250. That will give you quite a performance boost. Though the NP5125 doesnt have an expresscard slot, so would need to go via underside mPCIe slot used for wifi. Wifi would need to become a USB device if want to use if concurrently. Would need an external LCD for best performance too. -
umm you'd need much more than a 425m to run those games at 1080p with ultra settings, much much more. A 425m wont be that much better than what you currently have. You'll want at least a 460m or a 5850m, you can get those in laptops for easily under $1500.

Well I can't afford a new laptop right now. buying a brand new one right after i just got this one 2 weeks ago would be a waste of money. but it is ridiculously tempting. I could easily sell this brand new Sager for 700 bucks since its discontinued and would be way cheaper then anything anyone could find. but eh, ill have to see. but the next one in my sights is the..well look at my signature hehe
