Hi all! I'm thinking about buying a laptop as I head back for grad studies, and I would like something versatile enough to play a few games, but still come in around $1000 --not the easiest thing to do in the Canadian laptop market.

I have a 6800GS (albeit slightly overclocked) in my desktop computer and I'm fairly happy with how it performs. What notebook GPU would offer me something close to the same gaming performance?

    THANKS!

go 7600GT should have similar performance as the 6800GS

i would suggest getting 8600M GT though, shouldn't be that much more expensive than a 7600GT laptop

Eek. Not much chance of getting that for <$1000....How does the 8400M measure up by comparison? I can't seem to find a decent place to get Dx9 based laptops, other than IGPs, but an 8400M is a slightly cheaper possibility.

    http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=DNDWMA2&s=dhs&sm=2

I configured you an Inspiron 1720 with an 8600m GT, 2GB of RAM and a Core 2 Duo at 1.5GHz for 1200 bucks...add in an easy to find coupon and that should get you to about $1000...

Theres an inspiron 1520 with a 1.8 GHZ Core 2 Duo, an 8600m GT and 1GB of RAM for 1100 dollars...again a coupon should get you in the ballpark of a thousand bucks...

Yes, the only way to get a dedicated card under 1000 would be the 8400 g or gs. But im sorry to say it performs only about half as good or so as the 8600 GT.

My bad forgot about Dell.. true true. But you wont be getting it soon methinks.

8400M GS is definitely worse than a 6800GS, should be a fairly large margin.
Still though 8400M GS is not a bad card, 30ish FPS on games like Oblivion, COH at medium settings, so not too shabby

Wow. thanks for all the responses! I really do wish I could use the damn Dell coupons--it would make things so much easier...and cheaper. I would also prefer not to bring it across the border if I don't have to, so I may just end up biting the bullet and going for Dell.ca...Maybe the Vostro with the 8400GS.

    Thanks to all!
