go to the link below and run the program, it will tell you the temps, and if the load temps are high, chances are the idle temps will be high as well.

Get something to monitor your temps, check to see if your fans are running, if it's overclocked, reduce the clock, make sure the vents aren't blocked by dust or anything else, and make sure there's some space beneath and around the notebook.

Run oblivion for 10-15mins and close it.. see what the max temps hwmonitor shows up

Your temps are fine at the moment, pretty good actually.

Run any GPU intensive programs then, to try stress out the GPU card and see what temps it reaches. So it only shuts down when your playing games?

Its unlikely that dust is clogging up your vents/exhaust since your idle temps are quite cool. Just make sure nothing is obstructing the intake and outtake vents.

Download ATITool and select Scan for Artifacts, it will stress your card to the high clocks and the max temperatures it can go.

i guess it is the fan, they just love the dust. You got the dell computer right? you can try the fan controller and put the fans on max. Run any programs like ATItools and see if the temp goes up and shuts down as you scan for artifacts.

well after scanning for artifacts, it shut down again and now my notebook won't boot up to the sign in screen. (btw, nothing is blocking my vents and there is NO dust anymore).

Sounds like your GPU simply crapped out on you. Call Dell and get a repair.

I suggested you delete all traces of an overclocking on your laptop. This included uninstalling the overclocking program and the log files. Something like this might void your warranty and leave you to pay for the costs to have the damages repaired. If you didn't get rid of the overclocking program then you might get lucky and Dell might send you a new GPU so you can manually replace it yourself.

Make sure you do everything running on AC power with the battery pack OFF

If you can still boot up past the BIOS, id suggest doing a recovery install before returning it to Dell for repairs. They will probably do the same thing anyway

Alright then sounds like a defective notebook, I'd just send the laptop for repairs and include a complaint letter. Who knows maybe you'll get a freebie out of this.

i have finally concluded that it only over heats during game play. it overheats with the witcher and oblivion, but not bioshock. all settings maxed out. during restart, the GPU temp was 160 f

    driver version is 167.55

alright, put in 169.09 did not help. just went from an A07 Bios back to a A04 (previous) and it took a lot longer for it to shut down and the fans started to work when i went back to A04
