while playing oblivion, my notebook just shuts off. i have 169 drivers, power cord plugged in and this has never happened before. upon restart, it says my notebook got hotter than usual.
-
Were you using it on a soft surface?
-
on my tv tray
-
What are the reported temps for GPU and CPU?
-
it did not say
-
go to the link below and run the program, it will tell you the temps, and if the load temps are high, chances are the idle temps will be high as well.
http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php -
Get something to monitor your temps, check to see if your fans are running, if it's overclocked, reduce the clock, make sure the vents aren't blocked by dust or anything else, and make sure there's some space beneath and around the notebook.
-
sounds like dust problem to me.
-
and i'm on stock clocks
-
Run oblivion for 10-15mins and close it.. see what the max temps hwmonitor shows up
Your temps are fine at the moment, pretty good actually. -
-
Run any GPU intensive programs then, to try stress out the GPU card and see what temps it reaches. So it only shuts down when your playing games?
Its unlikely that dust is clogging up your vents/exhaust since your idle temps are quite cool. Just make sure nothing is obstructing the intake and outtake vents. -
Download ATITool and select Scan for Artifacts, it will stress your card to the high clocks and the max temperatures it can go.
-
i guess it is the fan, they just love the dust. You got the dell computer right? you can try the fan controller and put the fans on max. Run any programs like ATItools and see if the temp goes up and shuts down as you scan for artifacts.
-
well after scanning for artifacts, it shut down again and now my notebook won't boot up to the sign in screen. (btw, nothing is blocking my vents and there is NO dust anymore).
-
Sounds like your GPU simply crapped out on you. Call Dell and get a repair.
-
-
i have NEVER overclocked my gpu.
-
Make sure you do everything running on AC power with the battery pack OFF
If you can still boot up past the BIOS, id suggest doing a recovery install before returning it to Dell for repairs. They will probably do the same thing anyway -
-
after about 10 minutes of being off, it now starts.
-
It must be overheating, keep your eyes on the temps specially the GPU
-
i have finally concluded that it only over heats during game play. it overheats with the witcher and oblivion, but not bioshock. all settings maxed out. during restart, the GPU temp was 160 f
driver version is 167.55 -
drivers can affect temps, try changing driver to 169.09
-
Another + for the 169.09 here.
-
alright, put in 169.09 did not help. just went from an A07 Bios back to a A04 (previous) and it took a lot longer for it to shut down and the fans started to work when i went back to A04
-
well i just got my notebook back from Dell. they replaced my motorboard and fan because they said they were faulty. well it still shuts off after about 5 minutes of playing games
-
doesnt sound like dell did anything...
did they replace the GPU aswell?
