Hi there.![]()
I'm trying to find out which of these two cards is faster for games as I need to buy a notebook which I can play decently with.
I stumbled upon the GT240m but I can't find any review or comparison with the HD4650 or GT130 or 9600GT, so I decided to ask you guys if you know anything about this card and how it performs against these graphic cards.
Thanks.![]()

The GT240M is one of Nvidia's new 40nm GPUs. In terms of performance, it's slightly better than the HD4650 although the difference really isn't something mind blowing. I'd check the other stats of the laptops you're looking at since the difference isn't something that'd be a deal breaker.
-
since it's not out yet, simply judging by the specs, i'd put it between the hd4650 and the hd4670, all with gddr3.
-
The 4650 DDR3 is better than the 240M DDR3. The 240M DDR3 is better than the 130M and the 9600M GT but not very much.
Check this site
Acer 5739G with 240M
Just have in mind that their laptop with the 4650 DDR3 has a much better CPU than the 240M laptop. On the other hand, when you compare the 3Dmark Vantage score, the nvidia cards have an advantage when the PhysX is enabled, because the 3DMark is calculating the physics in your system separately from the graphics. So in an nvidia system the physics test are done by the CPU and GPU, in an ATI system the physics are done by the CPU only. So if you check the site you will see that the nvidia card with disabled PhysX has 26% less score. But still the score with PhysX enabled is lower than the 4650 DDR3. There are of course and games benchmarks which give a more 'real' picture.
Of course when you play games if the GPU is not powerful enough to do graphics and physics at the same time such as the 240M then you disable the PhysX.
I would go for the ATI but it also depends what are the other specs of the laptop. If the CPU in the 240M is much better than in the 4650 laptop then I would pick the 240M laptop. But generally I think the nvidia cards are more expensive than the ATI cards so I doubt you will find a similar price 240M laptop with better CPU than the 4650 laptop.
On last note the type of memory DDR3 or DDR2 is really important. If any of the cards has DDR2, pick the one that has DDR3. The difference will be significant. -
Actually, the Asus N51vn has a GT240M. Unless everyone(including resellers) got a huge typo, then it's out.

Yep, I'm asking because there's an offer of the Acer AS7770 (which I couldn't find in neither the net and the official Acer site)
Specs:
Q9000
4GB RAM
Geforce 240 1GB RAM (I guess it's the GT240, since it looks like no other model exists with that number).
500GB Hard disk
Hmmm...somehow I thought the GT240 would be faster then the 4650. :-/
EDIT: how rude of me, thanks for the replies people!
EDIT2: By the way, for gaming I should get a Dual Core with a higher clock rather then a Quad with slower clock right? -
I have no experience with the 240, but I do have a 4650. Just based on the number the two should be very close.
-
Do you mean Acer AS7738? I don't think there is a AS7770 model.
Not a problem mate. I would expect the 240M to perform much better than the 130M but apparently it doesn't. It has very similar specs to the 9700M GTS but the memory bus width is half. The 4650 is between the 9700M GTS and 9700M GT. The 4650/70 is really a gem as it has 2.66x the pipelines of the previous generation (3650/70). On the other hand, the 240M has 50% more than the 130M or the 9600M GT. Of course the comparison is not that simple but I have the feeling that the 240M would overclock very easily.
Anyway, I don't know how the 240M would behave but if you get a 17'' laptop with full HD resolution you'll need something more powerful to play games in native resolution. Otherwise the 240M should be fine. The quad core looks really sweet though. -
Unless they have misprinted the flyer, it's correct...I read Acer AS7770 (I couldn't find this model anywhere so I'm confused too
).
I have seen many HP with the HD4650, I might check them out better then.
EDIT: Stand by for some pics.
EDIT2: Here you go (the shop is MediaWorld, the language is Italian / the price is in euros):

I made a comparison between the HD4650, GT130m, GT240m, 9700m GT, 9600m GT and the HD4650 seams to be the winner (not with the FEAR game which we know performs better on Nvidia chips).

Now I'm undecided on these three (probably the first or third):
HP Pavilion DV6-1277EL (T9600, HD4650, 15,6”, 4GB Ram )
HP Pavilion DV6-1150el (T9550, HD4650, 15,6”, 4GB Ram)
HP Pavilion DV7-2085EL (Q9000, HD4650, 17”, 4GB Ram)
I have to investigate if the graphic cards have DDR2 or DDr3 memory. -
its ddr2. scrap hp
-
I've seen in NBR some HP dv6 users having a 4650 w/ GDDR3...
-
4650 has the Nvidia equivalent of 64 shaders, but a relatively low core clock for the architecture at 550. The 240M has less shaders at 48, but it's based on the improved GT200 architecture. The 4650 has a slight performance edge based on the Vantage GPU scores, maybe 10%. But the 240M is 40nm, will fit in smaller notebooks, create less heat, and consume less energy. The 240M is a fresh GPU for Nvidia, and even has DX 10.1 support. It's certainly a step in the right direction...
-
lol it's not GDDR3 but DDR3. Hp always gives cheap nonsence.... i'll nver buy HP again...
-
GDDR3 and DDR3 are the same thing. DDR2 is the crap nobody wants, and I can vouch for that. My DDR2 9600 GT in my old HP was underwhelming.
-
Well my friend decided to buy the notebook today (I suggested to wait a little bit more and decide without rushing, but there where only two pieces at the store so he wanted to be sure to have it and bought it), and he bought the HP Pavilion DV6-1150el (T9550, HD4650, 15,6”, 4GB Ram).
I checked for the ram and it said DDR3 so this particular model is ok on that point of view.
GDDR3 and DDr3 are indeed the same thing...the G stands for Graphic (so it's often used in graphic specs and not for system ram specs, but you can also find DDR3 for gf).
I hope that he'll enjoy the notebook (that I recommended for the prince range he wanted to spend) and play some games.
Thanks again everyone. -
My HP - provided HD4650 is GDDR3 in GPU-z.
I seen lots of posts of people wrongly state that those HP versions are DDR2 and it's wrong. Bring-in a screenie of a HP laptop with DDR2-based HD4650!!! -
Can I ask you what cpu has your notebook and if you are happy with the gaming performances (if you play obviously).
Thanks.
EDIT: Nevermind, I just saw your profile (AMD TurionX2Ultra ZM-82 2.2GHz) -
HD 4650 is faster overall (but not by much), but the GT 240M has lower power consumption and thus better battery life, at least according to notebookcheck.net (and yes, they did a legitimate comparison).
-
-
Yes Vampire666,
I got a ZM-82 Turion Ultra. Although the HD4650 GDDR3 is awesome, the mid-range CPU manages to pull a not-too-bad 5900 3Dmarks06 (nice save).
I assume that a Nvidia 240m and an Intel C2D would still score a tad higher in 3Dmarks06, because of the more powerful CPU...
The thing is that my DV6z cost me $999 CDN fully loaded (4 Gigs 500GIG HDD wireless N, bluetooth, led backlit LCD, an Intel C2D/GT240m combo would sell for at least $350 more around here. -
-
What I meant was that when we see written DDR3 on the specs of a video card that means GDDR3 and not the DDR3 that we have on our mobos.
At least this is what I knew...I could be mistaken though.
EDIT: Damn! I didn't know that "A speciality of the Radeon HD 4600 Series is the possibility to use ordinary DDR2 and DDR3 graphic memory (as a cheaper alternative to GDDR3). However, cards that use that kind of memory will be slower than others equipped with GDDR RAM"
http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-4650.13883.0.html
...now I feel stupid...and I really don't know what will be the impact on performances with DDR3 on the HD4650. -
Both gpus are good my friend. you can max out tetris with 8xAA,max res in FULL HD(1080P) to.But i like nvidia more, either way you should get a 300m series. http://www.nvidia.com/object/tesla_preconfigured_clusters_wtb.html Go there for a real future proof machine.
