Alrighty so... I've got this older 6970M, and while it games plenty hard, it's hot, aged, and requires this undervolt to remain in my laptop. Again, it's just too hot. :(

I waited for the new GTX 700 line to appear and I'm hesitant to jump on any of them, mostly due to the lack of info on which are plug-and-play for my machine. The other thing is that I want the next GPU to offer the best performance for the money.

Anyone have any ideas? (Was looking at the 765M...)

I don't think they make 765m as MXM. You'll have to go 770m or 780m.

Why not a 7970m? Its certainly twice the performance of a 6990m and runs much cooler.
Also might be able to pick up a cheap one in the marketplace.

What's generally the price range for a used 7970M? Does it run that much cooler than the 6970M? o_O

I saw es sold for 300usd and oem ~250-260 euro on nbr. Not sure if it will get lower when 8970.

Much better battery life, not dure how hot though.

765m can possibly mxm as it is offered in the alienware 17,but the performance improvement compare to 6970 wont be much.
