I love how they describe Halo 3 players:

As a PC FPS player, I never really understood why Halo was supposed to be so "cool", since it didn't really do anything new, except run primarily on a console.

Halo basically put everything that previous console FPSs had done right and them stuck it all together.

For PC gamers...perhaps it is nothing new.

When Halo was first conceived, it has some amazing depth and ideas to it. Yet, in the end, it became a ol' FPS. I believe Halo was soley a Mac project, but alas, Microsoft purchased Bungie. Oh well. Halo 1 was a great game. If the story was finished with Halo 1, and it had online capabilities, then I would praise it. Yet, Bungie had to make a second game, just for online play, and to extend the store. Likewise, they didn't even finish the game, they had to extend the store even more. Round 3 will be too exhausting, in a way in which people have had too much damn Halo.

The thing i liked the most about it was the co-op mode while on a mission. I dont recall playing such a game before, even CS was co-op but without actual missions or storylines. plus the idea of being able to use vehicles and alien weapons.

to me that was original, i had seen it in many shoot 'em ups but not an FPS game

You never played Serious Sam, Unreal Tournament or any of those games? They came out ages before Halo. I played through Serious Sam with two friends of mine, all in co-op mode... it was a blast. But like I said, the only ground that Halo broke was bringing a decent FPS to a console. The game itself is mediocre at best.

I still think one of the best FPSs for a console, if not the best one ever created, is Perfect Dark for the Nintendo 64. It had CO-OP, it even had Counter Ops, where your friend can play the enemy! Also, the multiplayer can't be beat by no game. It had bots, and you could customize their difficulty through speed, aggression, and intellect. I haven't seen Halo do any of this, sans CO-OP. Perfect Dark, my brothers and sisters, is perfection.

I have played serious sam and unreal but I meant without the need for an internet connection and a real storyline. It was the first Xbox game I played and i liked the co-op mode without the connection cuz over in NZ we can have real crap connections with high latencies.

Oh how fast people forget. Halo was revolutionary, for both the consoles and FPS's in general. It introduced the dual weapon setup, forcing the player to balance what they carried instead of pulling a cannon out of their pocket (Serious Sam). It introduced the shield/health aspect, leading many games to get rid of the Doom era health meter. It's AI was also revolutionary at the time. Instead of just running at you, they hid, worked together, and each enemy acted differently. Not to mention the graphics were one of the best at the time also, including vast outdoor scenery. In the end, the game was just a blast to play.

Remember, this game is OLD. You can't use today's standards to judge it.

Then we can use yesteryear games to judge it. If I remember correctly, the Doom games also had co-op play. Not to mention that each of the creatures in that game were highly unique and each had their own special abilities. Now, try playing Doom with another friend online at the hardest difficulty. Legendary mode in Halo might be hard, but Doom on it's hardest difficulty was completely insane, especially when you played with someone else online, then more enemies would quickly flood the screen. Another amazing game.

sigh...halo haters. this was a great game in my opinion. in this game you actually have to work together to get something accomplished...unlike CS where if you go alone u have a pretty good chance of takin the other team out. capture the flag, territories, arming the bomb, juggernaut, ninja, there's so many options available.

also the story line was so good too.

    - Dual weapon setup? Like the akimbo Enforcers in the original UT? (released in '99. Halo was 2001). Besides, did Halo 1 do this, or was it originally in Halo 2?
    - Shield/Health? Also in Unreal Tournament originally. You didn't start with the shield, but you could get one, and it'd take damage instead of the health.
    - AI, I may give you that. But that's still not that ground-breaking. Unreal Tournament's AI was quite good, especially when you got into melee range, as was Quake 3 Arena's AI before that. The AI would break engagement to go find powerups and such.

I'm not using today's games... I'm using the games of that era. Halo just wasn't revolutionary, except that it was on a console, and you might possibly say that it's mildly evolutionary.

by dual weapon he meant you can only cary 2 weapons(or 3 if you dual wield) at a time, not 12...

health/shield was pretty much standard. only diff is that halo's shiels self regenerates

ai.. I dunno I mostly play multiplayer

Dual weaponry was not that revolutionary. Im pretty sure it had been used before and it was not in the first halo which it seems ur talking about.

Halo was a great game because it brought a different style of gameplay and was a mix between a ut or quake style game and a more stealthy realistic shooter.

Otherwise there was no revolutionary aspect other than that it was a great game.

    And halo 1>halo 2 mlg> halo 2.

    1. By dual weapons he meant that you could ONLY carry 2 weapons

    2. By the shield/health thing he was talking about the fact that your shields would recharge after taking damage, considering you were not hit for a few seconds. This really affected gameplay(you could take cover and wait for your shields to recharge)

I think the main success of Halo was that the weapons and vehicles were perfect. Each gun felt satisfying to shoot and the weapon damage felt great. Especially using the shotgun to kill a flood in one shot.

I'm playing Halo 2, and that has just destroyed the weapons. Holding two is unwieldy and difficult to switch. The game play mechanic has changed from "choose your favourite weapons and try to work out a strategy to kill the aliens", to, "get a look at the aliens by travelling ahead, then double-back to dual wield/find that ideal weapon you passed that would easily dispatch the aliens".

Don't get me started with destructible vehicles. Running game miles on foot in a LONG tunnel is NOT FUN.

Nope, the console will get it first. Btw, i do wonder maybe they never own a pc that can play CS... with other ppl.
Maybe the story is mindblowing, but online FPS, it still far way down the list on the legend, CS. Btw, i heard halo 2 have sucky ending.

Dual weapons? Basically, a limited inventory? Halo was released in Nov, 2001. Deus Ex was out in June of 2000. Still not groundbreaking.

And regenerating shields saw previous life in the Protoss in Starcraft. Not a terribly unique concept, it was just applied to an FPS. Deus Ex also had healing upgrades, which are pretty similar. Halo was evolutionary, and very little at that.

No, I wouldn't understand because Halo didn't do anything new. I've played too many games, and there's just nothing new in Halo, except for frat boys who suddenly think they're "1337"

I think the Halo series is great. Not near the best of all time (Half-Life FTW!), but still great. With Halo 1 I had a blast playing through coop with friends many times. Halo 2 had a terribly boring campaign unfortunately, I could only play through it once. Fortunately though, it had a great multiplayer that was a blast to play with friends. If Halo 3 can deliver a single player as good or better than Halo 1, and a multiplayer as good or better than Halo 2, I think it will be an excellent game. I'll try to pick up H3 in stores on day 1, but if I don't get it it's not that big of a deal to me. I still think there are several other games that will be better this year.

The pure fact that Halo 2 is the fastest selling media product in history (movies, music, games) is testament to how many people played, and liked Halo 1.

I don't know why people like to bash console gamers so much. Although Halo wasn't a perfect game, it was a very good one.

Super Mario 64 was a console game, wasn't it? Gears of War?

Halo 2 was the fastest selling video game because people who never played any type of video game before were introduced to Halo and thought it was teh pwnzorz, so they all went to buy it.

Fine, then let's put it this way: even if Halo was the worst game ever made - worse than Barbie Pony Adventures - Bungie has made enough money to ship your sorry butt to a third world country as a slave.

To quote Marshall Mathers: "Yeah buddy, laugh, it's funny, I have the money to have you killed by somebody who has nothing".

When Halo hit the xbox scence on the console, console FPS players hadn't had anything this polished, addictive and frantic since Golden Eye!! Refined UI, weapon combinations, and xbox live made it a great game that experts and noobs enjoyed alike.

The PC is what invented the fps catagory, and serious fps games will continute to be PC first as the console cannot beat the keyboard mouse combo.

It was the new Goldeneye (Until TimeSplitters II) and had a cool universe. I read the book series, and it was fantastic. Unfortunately, Halo II cmpletely borked the story, and so I have no valid reason to get Halo III.

Now Killzone, the first game wasn't very well received, (presumably because you had recoil, unlike in Halo) but I loved it, and the PSP sequel was made well enough that I will buy Killzone 2 on PS3.

Halo was just easy, so lots of people could get into it. You didn't need brains or strategy, you just needed the bigger gun. It was a blast at lan parties, but only until enough people got their hands on OFP.

Haha.. i like it.. If they really think Halo is the greatest, they really haven't tried anything out there on the pc market. (Really, the control scheme of using a gamepad on FPS and realtime strategy games... it's not as good as a trusty keyboard and mouse, althought Wii might change that)

Come play MLG halo2 noob. It takes at least 4 to 5 months to refine your strategy and aim to even come close to playing the regulars in MLG.

I wouldnt expect ppl on this forum to be hardcore into competitive gaming like i am so ill leave it at that.

Halo 1 multiplayer tookmore skill than halo 2 multiplayer. However players in halo2 started developing battle rifle strategies that ending up making halo 2 very competitive as well.

Oh, and isn't MLG american. So, pay for my plane tickets, cause I aint playing at 250ms.

ok, back to the ORIGIONAL topic.

    Halo vs actual revolutionary games..

CooP gameplay, IMO, R6 Covert ops (2000) was far more revolutionary in it's FPS coop gameplay than Halo ever was.

gameplay/storyline/AI, DuesEX was far greater than halo in every aspect, but you don't hear of it much..

Multiplayer wasn't that fun, usually it involved someone camping with an RPG, or people going for a vehicle and team killing..

Halo 3 is going to blow, for many reasons.. Firstly, the beta showed me how lame and unbalanced the game STILL is. The first person to rush and grab the vehicle will instantly win.. They can ram everyone, and shoot people at the same time as dodging every shot, and no one can place a shot since most of the weapons are underpowered, or overpowered, and aiming is either too slow, or too innaccurate to track something that's actually moving with a game pad.

also there's the fact that 360 games have already maxed out the disk capacity, and are most of the time short, like 6 or less hours.
GOW--- 4:30 to beat on insane in COOP
Crackdown--- 2:00 to beat on normal in COOP
Dead rising--- 4:30 to kill the soldier on the tank at the end.
PDZ--- 3:30 In CooP perfect agent
I dont get how bioshock managed 17 hours for me.. but it did :D

anyway.. I highly doubt the game will be over 5 hours long, it's going to suck, and it's STILL going to be EXTREMELY linear like all the others..

    (cant wait for DeusEX 3 :D sometime in 2008 i think.. )

I don't see why we can't all agree with Pitabred. He's right and backs up what he says.

The game didn't invent anything new. He's right when he says that. It was all done before. This doesn't mean the game wasn't fun (who said it wasn't). The game is fun to play (games should be - and it wouldn't sell if it wasn't fun). That doesn't mean the game is hugely hyped and overrated.

I'm not a big FPS gamer (PC or console). But this is 100% true. It realyl did not do anything new, except run primarily on a console.
It's a fun game (I'm sure we can all agree here) and it's a good console FPS. You can't tell me the game is revolutionary or that it brought anything new to FPS gaming, it didn't.

Conclusion: Halo's a fun game to play. It certainly isn't the best FPS made (not even close) but it's a good game overall. I just wish Halo fans would stop overreacting the moment someone says Halo isn't the best game ever.

well halo made things sorta fair you know? except for that overpowered pistol in halo 1. i mean you can kill a guy with ur assault rifle against a pistol or vice versa. you can kill a tank with sniper or vice versa.

unlike in cs where you have an autosnipe against the MP5 on opposite ends of long A on dust2...we know who's gonna win that battle.

just give it a break. halo was great and fun. it was something new for the console. Lanning that thing was the bomb back then. hours of fun trying to capture flags on sidewinder with tanks running around everywhere.

im sorry that halo players arent as good or qualified as FPS players on the PC. not their fault u know.
