    Hey dondadah88,

I was using the 186.81 WHQL drivers before on my M1730.
I was fed up with these drivers because Demigod kept crashing. So I thought I would try these.

From using them so far I havent had anymore crashes, and my idle temps are 56C at the moment which is about the same as before.

In Call of Juarez: Blood in Bound i'm getting an average of 55fps @ 1920x1200 on High Setting. This is about a 10fps increase on my machine.

    Havent tried Fallout 3 yet.

P.s I had to install the latest Nhancer Beta Version to stop a xml error occuring

    nice...
that's good to hear. 45 to 55fps(around 25 percent increase  ) is a big jump no matter what anyone says with just a driver update. (unless sli wasn't supported. then that's a different story)

when you get a chance, please compare as much games as you can. thanks.

you get rep for your OP

you can use any driver on any gpu(with the excpetion ati with ati and nvidia with nvidia... and off course your device id is placed in the inf.)

when it says it's from toshiba, acer or where ever. it's just that's where they saw the driver come up. it doesn't mean you are limited to name brands.(toshiba, dell, leveno, etc.)

    Hey all,

Just did a test on Need For Speed Shift with latest patch and I noticed a decent frame increase with the 191.03 drivers

I have included some screens with FPS included.

Before I was getting about 22-35fps depending on numbers of cars etc.

Now as you can see I'm getting about 30fps average with 4xAA & 4xA Filtering

I find it funny that in the past, less than 6 months ago, drivers with modded infs were the holy grail of the laptop performance hunters and now suddenly everyone is saying I'm not gonna use them because they were made for desktop... What gives?

I think it has been a bit more than 6 months, but the fundamental change is that Nvidia started to release official, WHQL laptop drivers on a quarterly basis. Prior to this, there was a big difference between the latest modded drivers and the latest driver provided by the manufacturer -- some games simply didn't work and others had quirks (e.g. on my laptop, Mass Effect has an extra 40 seconds added to startup and ALT-TAB recovery times with 167.59 which went away with 17X.XX). Today, I really don't feel the need to update them any more often than once every 3 months because the modded ones don't always give better performance and even when they do, it's something along the lines of a couple of FPS and 1-2% of 3DMark06.

I'd also like to add this: While it doesn't pertain to gaming, using tweaked drivers can often be detrimental to enjoying HD video. by HD Video, I'm not talking "clicking the HD button on a youtube video", but watching a TV show in 1080p on your computer. I was running tweaked drivers from both LV2G and NBF, and while both yielded 3 to 5 percent improvements in gaming performance, anytime I desired to watch HD video, the first minute to 90 seconds would be smooth, and then after that it would look like a photo slide-show with smooth sound. Initially I thought it was a problem with my browser (Opera), so I tried watching the same HD video on Firefox and IE8. The same results ensued. I managed to trace the problem to "trustedinstaller", which apparently is a program that not only works on the installation of your programs, but also checks your computer for updates and helps to verify that your drivers are "Microsoft Approved". Such suspicion was confirmed in some capacity when I downloaded the standard nVidia laptop driver and while I lost 2 or 3 fps on my favorite games, I was able to watch all the HD video I wanted without any stuttering whatsoever.

While this may not be of paramount importance to those of us who solely use high-performance laptops for gaming, there are some of us who also use our laptops to enjoy media, be it streaming, or from a blu-ray drive. These applications also require input from the GPU, and if the GPU is being bottlenecked due to a tweaked driver not being able to do its job due to a restriction from Vista / Win7, then what good is the driver for non-gaming applications? The idea of improving drivers is undoubtedly a great one, as it pushes the big companies to innovate and refine their drivers, but some attention must be paid to making a driver that not only improves on gaming performance, but is completely useful in day-to-day operations as well, and that's something that until it's fixed, will cause users like me to use the standard driver. Speed in games is nice, but all-around reliability in all of a GPU's tasks are what wins it for me.

Same. Doubtless the availability of official drivers has lessened the use of modded-inf ones, but it does seem odd that so many people would refuse to use modded-inf ones now. I've never had any unreasonable trouble with modded-inf drivers, even ones designed for desktop Quadros. The worst driver I've had to date in stability terms is actually nVIDIA's official 185.85 laptop driver, although it may have been partially a victim of what games I was playing at the time it was installed.

I never did update at every release myself. Too much work for too little gain. 3 months-6 months was about right. I'm running laptopvido2go.com 190.89 on XP x64 right now, and Dell 174.31 stock ones on XP x86, which I haven't used much recently and thus haven't bothered to upgrade.
