The Nvidia GPU has advantage in the Shader Speed by 1080MHz against 650Mhz from the ATI GPU and a Memory Speed of 1066MHz againt 800MHz from the ATI GPU.

The ATI GPU has advantage in the DirectX support having DirectX 11 and Shader 5.0 against DirectX 10.1 and Shader 4.1 for the Nvidia GPU.

There are other differences but I don't know which to consider a better GPU, or more powerful, so please help me decide which to get as this will make me buy the Alienware M11x or the HP dv6t Select Edition.

    Thanks.

Thats a pretty close call, I'd go with the ATI due to it being more future-proof.

Actually by looking further into it, did you notice Ati's shader pipelines. I think they'd be pretty equal in gaming performance but the Ati also has DX11 (not that you'd able to make much use of it for High-end gaming your FPS would be too low on that card.)

DX 11 wont be manstream in the coming 1 year at least. Also, the said ati card would lack the juice to fluidly run a dx11 game at decent settings. Hence, dx11 should not really be a reason.

Having said that, however, the ATI driver support is better than Nvidia's and so i would have gone for the 5650.

Both GPUs will be basically equal, the 5650 is probably slightly better, but the processor options in the dv6 are much better than those in the M11x if you are looking for performance over battery life. The 5650 will probably run cooler as well, because ATI cards generally run cooler than equal Nvidia counterparts. It won't be a huge difference but the difference in clock speeds should make the 5650 run slightly cooler.

You cannot compare the shaders on the cards. Ati has a completely different architecture. But the ati 5650 is better. It will run alot cooler and use alot less power. The nvidia on the other hand is a pretty good overclocker apparently. The 5650 is essentially a 4670 with more shaders so it will out perform the 335m. Also if your look at the Alienware m11x and HP Dv6t id say take a look at the new envy 14 its going to have a 5650 and its going to be only about 999$ =D

    A lot cooler?

Nvidia is using 40nm tech now so I don't think it is.

The 335m is not some fermi based monster.

in terms of cool, if you're talking about the M11x, the 335m runs very cool in that chassis..

5650 is the better gpu. It will perform better in games. Directx 11 is better optimized than directx 10.1 plus it uses multi-threading and direct compute so you will experience better frame rates in future games with the 5650 vs the 335m even though the hardware is similar (although the hardware of the 5650 is slightly better anyway). This is, of course, as long as you don't enable the extra graphical effects of directx 11 games - tessellation and advanced depth of field etc. And don't forget the 5650 supports opengl 4.0 while the 335m supports 3.3.

Plus the cpu options in the m11x are limited and will be the bottleneck of the system not the 335m - even with the core i7 processor because they are all ultra low volatge in the m11x so low clock rates. Advantages of the alienware include nvidia optimus and so long battery life and of course ultra portability. But in terms of actual performance the laptop with the 5650 is the definite winner. But the alienware can play all modern games (gaming is what it's designed for) so it's really just up to you :)

I wonder about the analysis when you start to overclock the GPUs. Acer 3820TG users with the HD5650 in thier computers are getting 36Mark06 scores of 9115 http://forum.notebookreview.com/6368400-post553.html with the GPU overclocked. But, MBP users with the NVIDIA GT330M are generating scores of 8960  Imageshack - screenshot013ii.jpg. You would think that the GT335M should easily outperform the HD5650 at max overclock given how superior it is to the GT330M. I think we have to wait until the N82 finds itself in greater circulation to see how its GT335M overclocks. That way, the GPUs' performance can be compared with similar CPUs.

GT335m and HD5650 are neck at neck performance wise IMO. You're going to have more raw power with the HD5650, but with the overclocking potential of the GT335m, they equal up pretty well. Since NEITHER notebook will ship with a high res (FHD) screen, the only way to tell would be to look at the benches on the GT330m Vaio Z with the FHD panel. I think those scores will give you a baseline on what to expect, because 1.) the Vaio Z11 has either high-end i5 or i7 620um and 2.) it's running in most likely a quad SSD configuration, so that gives you the absolute best case scenario. Most of the notebooks sold with the HD5650 or the GT335m are going to be sold with 1366x768, and excluding most of the members of NBR Forums, most will not hook up to an external panel to play games. So either of those cards at 1366x768 is quite more than enough with a decent i-series processor.

But I agree, the GT335m's core needs to be spread around a little before hard numbers can be formed.

    $0.02 :)

Tried to extrapolate from the Z11 performance but the GT330M in the Sony is underclocked to begin with and seems to throttle at incresed OC settings. It can't get to within 1,500 points of the MBP. IMO, it can't stay stable enough to OC to its potential. I think we have to wait for the N82 to see the real potential and comparison.

Don't mean to threadjack, so slap me silly if it's rude.

    But I'm currently looking at two i7 720QM laptops. A sager with 4GM 1333 DDR3 and the 5650, and a Asus 6GB 1066 DDR3 and a NVIDIA GeForce GTS 360M.

    Price difference is about $200...

So. go with the 5650, or the 360M? Not afraid of a little overclocking, but would also like to future proof as much as posible at this price pioint.

And in response to your threadjack, go with the 360M, it is much better than the 5650.

What are the prices of these? If it's around $1100 you could get a 5850, which is much better than either.

Sager NP2180 w/ 5650. no OS for about $1150, then an Asus G51JX-A1 w/ the 360M at $1300 after $200 in rebates (bleh). Both with 15.5" LED 1080 screens. Asus comes with 2GB more ram, but at 1066Mhz.

Things don't have to play top notch for gaming, but I'd like to future proof as much as possible around $1000 budget. The screen is running up cost a bit, but i'm going to be using it for quite a bit of CS5 and lightroom work, as an amature photographer. So the extra res is nice.

I'm finding conflicting information everywhere, so thought this was as good a place as any.

Cheese, I haven't found that card in ~$1000 i7 laptop yet. Have you seen somthing I missed?

XoticPC's Force 1656-ID4; ~$1100 for a configuration with an i7-720QM, 4GB of RAM, and an HD 5850. It's basically the same as the MSI GX640, which usually comes with an i5-430M, but it only costs $119 to upgrade to an i7-720QM. Resolution is a step down at 1680x1050, but at least you keep almost all the vertical pixels.

Honestly, the difference between the i5-430M and the i7-720QM isn't all that big, though. For most games there won't be much of a difference, while the advantage in video encoding is 30%. I'd say it's worth $119 extra, but you're also sacrificing some battery life and increasing heat output.

The GX640 / 1656-ID4 isn't quite for everyone, so you should read up on it some more, but for gaming bang for buck it can't be beaten.

OK, can't believe I missed that. So that obviously is better then the asus. I'm going to go read up on it. It'll be 1213 with the i7 ram and a comparable hdd

I know there's not much that takes on quad cores yet, but I figure it'll future proof it. Plus I heard the inactive cores scale up to basically a i5 when not in use, in the 7.20's. Case 2.8.

Multitasking, multimedia, Photoshop with raw files, transcoding and ripping my DVD library are all some of the things I'm looking to do... so no I guess I'm not strickly looking for a gaming laptop. Still it be nice to play a game or two a medium settings 2 years out.

yup I saw that and got confused, but figured it out.

Hows the battery life on the MSI vs the 2.3 to 3 hours ill get with the Sager? We can take this to PM if we're cluttering this thread too if you want.

Thanks for the correction. Fixed now. It's a good deal, although the stock GX640 has the advantage of a 3-year warranty and a 9 cell battery.

With GPU underclocking and the i5-430M, the GX640 gets 2-3 hours of battery life. I got around 2 hours when watching movies at full brightness and volume. With the i7-720QM and the 6-cell, you would probably expect 1.2-2 hours.

As for the discussion, it probably shouldn't be here, although it's better if it isn't just PMs. I'd say the best place for it is probably the GX640 owners' thread.

this is good option... Asus G73 BB version is similar too but about 1200-1300... but if u pay that much might as well get the X1 which is 1400.. the G73 can easily handle anything and 5870 is much better than 5850 actually.. also allows more ocing on clocks.

    +100 to 200, + 100 to 200, ect.

    Isn't that always the case?

    :p

I decided to go with the Force, but i'm not sure if I should go with the 540M or the 720QM. Posted a Q in the GX640 thread on the interchangability of these CPU's, and if I can just swap out in a year or two to a Quad if I choose.

Thanks all for the help in this thread!
