Nvidia 650 vs 680 in laptops

Does anyone know how much performance their is between the Nvidia 650 vs 680used in laptops
I have had 2 answers from dell and hp
1.When playing high end games the only real difference is the 680 would allow ultra while the 650 would use one level below.
2. I have heard everything from it is 20% to 200% better using the 680.

I do hope that one day notebookcheck changes their game benchmarking test

For example
1920x1080 ---> ultra, high, medium, low
1600x900 ---> ultra, high, medium, low

Rather than
1920x1080 --->ultra
1366x768--->high, medium,low


I mean, do many people who use 1920x1080 resolution display really try gaming at 1366x768

 

Massive performance difference. 680m allows not only higher settings, but also higher resolution while maintaining better performance overall.

Honestly its a good card, those 2 choices are going to be in very different laptops, just make sure you can put up with the complete size change compared to something with a 650m. Although the 680m should last longer, but it costs more, just depends if you feel its worth it.

I'd get the 680m personally, it has a huge performance increase over the 650m. Plus it does have a bit of headroom for some overclocking when needed.

lol nope, Cloud is tired of his 680m. He likes to upgrade every year

I kind of agree with him though, I got to the point where a single 7970m or 680m wasn't enough... I owned both, but ended up going with 680m sli...

Speaking of the 650m, my new M14x will be here Monday... I'm thinking I'll end up selling it though. That, or sell my M18x and build a Titan-powered desktop. Decisions, decisions...

 

failwheeldrive is correct. I think I have some sort of ADHD when it comes to notebooks. I usually own mine for a year then sell them and buy a new one.

680M is allright I suppose, but cant say no to more power

I`m also thinking about building myself a desktop with Titan failwheel. Watercooled, silent, with a 1600p 120Hz screen. Very tempting but its been a while since I`ve ventured in to desktop territory. Will wait til Haswell is out anyways so plenty of time for decision making

 

Same here man, I haven't owned a desktop in years so I would have a lot to learn, but I'm also thinking about picking up a 1600p monitor regardless of which route I go. I think the 680ms would handle the higher resolution pretty well, but if they're not enough it may push me towards a new build.

And I totally understand the upgrade bug. The M14x is 6th (!) new laptop this year lol. To be fair though, it's a replacement for my faulty M11x. Dell is really hooking me up, going from a base M11x r1 to a decked-out M14x r2 is quite an upgrade

I agree. The jump from high at "768p" to ultra at 1080p is huge.

 

I think this is because most laptops being sold on the market are only 1366x768, so they want their benchmarks to be more universally comparable.

 

It would be better if they had 768 and 1080 categories. I would have guessed that most gaming laptops are 1080p by this point, so it's kind of ridiculous for notebookcheck to disregard that category of laptops almost completely.

 

Man how much disposable income do you have . I love my m18x to death but once it becomes obsolete I may take a dip into desktop gaming as well, last time I used a desktop was years ago, the motherboard was still a PCI motherboard lol. Desktop give you twice the power for the same money, nvidias future plans to streamline and optimise GPU and CPU power looks exciting

 

I'm far from wealthy, trust me This hobby is wayyy cheaper than my old one (modding cars.) I've spent more on custom turbo builds or suspension work than I did on my M18x.

Going desktop sounds good though. I'm looking forward to seeing what Maxwell (and beyond) have in store. It may be a good time to build a beastly desktop, or I may stick with monster mobile machines

 

Gona go a little off topic with this one but ive had my eye on origin pc for quite some time, hope they will still be good in a few years time, been hearing good things about their build quality and honouring warranties
