I Have a NVIDIA 7900GS in my Dell Inspiron E1705 laptop and AGAIN, the card has gone out on me. This time it lasted about 8 months and coincidentally, it was a few days after i reformatted the computer.

Are there any other video cards that I could use in the computer without having to do any modifications?

Does anyone know of a place to buy a NVIDIA 7900GS or or equivalent card at a respectable price?

    Thanks.

I don't think you can replace the graphics card without replacing the entire motherboard.

EDIT: Scratch that; you can with this model.
You could replace it with a 7800GS or 7900GS.

You can install the ATi X1400,
    7800GS, 7900GS, 7900GTX, 7950GTX, Quadro FX1400M, Quadro FX2500M.

    Here is a great site,
    http://eduncan911.com/archive/2007/12/11/why-the-inspiron-is-a-king.aspx

It shows how to tare down the laptop and upgrade the graphics card.

If youre graphics card keeps dying, it is probably overheating
When you get a replacement card, download I8KFANGUI. Set the graphics fan to full speed all of the time, so that the card does not burn out again.
You can set each fan individually. There are either 1 or 2 fans in your system depending on the configuration when purchased. If you have 1 or 2 fans, you can control both with I8KFANGUI
Its a great program. It keeps my Dell nice and cool, never once had a problem with the software. I must have user it for a good 5 years now.

    K-TRON,

thanks for introducing me to that link! Incredibly helpful information. I still cannot seem to find a Quadro FX2500M for under $325 is this the going rate these days?

Quadro's are generally more expensive than the geforce models

When my Quadro died in my laptop I was informed that it cost $1360
what a ripoff. Then again that was coming from Voodoo, which is a group of crooks

I have seen some 7900GS/7900GTX models go for the E1705 for around $250-300

So I've installed a Quadro FX2500M but on start up I am still not receive any picture (not even a backlight black) and I'm getting flashing lights on the "keyboard and wireless status lights" see the link for a picture.

    http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins9400/en/om/about.htm#wp1043338

The "9" light is a solid green and the "A" and "down arrow" are blinking.

Does anyone know what this means? Thanks.

maybe your notebook's BIOS is not recognizing it properly.

make sure your notebook has the latest BIOS update.

That error message means your memory is not seated correctly. I had this same message maybe a week ago on my E1505 after I cleaned all of the dust out.
I accidentally did not connect one of the memory cards properly. Check that both cards are connected properly and try powering up.
Take each card out one at a time to verify that the cards are installed properly.

K-TRON, I owe you dearly! After installing that new card and not even getting a picture of anything I was about to give up. Sure enough the other day i pulled my computer a part and popped out a memory stick. I just looked and you were right. Clicked it in and she's up and running again. Thanks so much!
