I've whittled down my options to two similarly specced notebooks, both running on entry level editions of the Santa Rosa platform:

The Samsung R70 and the ASUS F3Sr

Budget is very tight and the deciding factor really comes down to the graphics cards. Would the ATI Mobility Radeon HD2400 be a better option than the Nvidia 8400M GS? Both are 128mb versions.

I havent found anything that directly compares these two models.

Have to make purchase tomorrow so any advice will be very well received! :)

    Thanks

    Sols

they will be pretty equal, but I think 8400GS is more O/Cable.

Thanks for the pointer to the sticky - Yes, knew there were wider survey threads, it's just that I'm having trouble isolating meaningful feedback about the 128mb models. And next to nothing in terms of direct comparison. In terms of the Benchmark List, onboard memory doesnt appear to be listed/factored in.

So going on what's been said here they are pretty much six of one, half a dozen of the other?

Vengance_01, I didnt quite understand what you meant by O/Cable

He means overclockable, so that you can overclock the card and increase its performace.

With overclocking the 8400gs you could potentially obtain roughly 20% increase of performance. This, however, comes at a risk of overheating your laptop to the point of damage.

I dont think the girlfriend would like that :p . Take it as read, this laptop will be running at vanilla revs rather than under 'custom' conditions. It's one thing overclocking a desktop, quite another a notebook

    HD2400 beats both the 8400gs, 8400g and 8400gt
    hd2400xt absolutly whoops aswell

i would see which one has more turbocache (nvidia) or hypermemory (ati)

because dynamic memory could be a factor to consider aswell :)

Its wierd hd2400 is on cheaper laptops than 8400gs and gt but its better than both :S

How well would the ATI mobility HD2400 run games like Oblivion and Bioshock ?

bioshock wouldnt be too much of a problem, but i would imagine oblivion would have a low frame rate on max settings
