You will not be able to upgrade the graphics card.

Anyway, from what I've seen the 8400M G (not even the GS or GT) scores about half of what my X1600 does...and the X1400 is about half the X1600 in terms of power. So 8400M G ~= X1400...so the GS ought to be a good bump in power for gaming. For multitasking the GPU does not matter.

Read the Stickies before posting... The GPU Guide answers all your questions.
The 8400GS is about equal to the X1400 in terms of performance, and is dx100 capable.

X1400 is the old card at this point (DX9). It's slow, can barely play Half-Life 2.

The X2400 vs 8400 is a more fair comparison since both are next-gen (DX10) cards.

That's not true, I can play Half Life 2 on 1280*800 pretty fine on my notebook with settings on Medium/High .

Uh... I'm running Half Life 2 on high on the VAIO, the X1400 may be last gen but its still pretty potent for a basic card

half life 2 im running high 4xAA/8xAF and getting 43FPS....

that being said i'd go with the 8400gs. reason being there on next-gen notebooks (Santa Rosa) which is definitely a good buy.

The X2400 is not a dx10 capable card. ATi's dx10 range is the HD2xxx.. I am not even sure an X2400 exists.. The X2500 does, but then it's a rebranded X1700..

That would suck if Dell is only using the 8400M GS, and it is worse than the x1400 they were using. The x1400 ran Anarchy Online at super high settings perfectly when I had it.

technicalities. when people refer to x2400 they are actually just misnaming the hd 2400.

hopefully people will avoid the x2300/x2500 fiasco.

Ok so the 8400M GS is better than the X1400 right? I like to play games like Half life 2 and the only "high end" game will be Battlefield 2142, will this be ok for it?

Also does anyone have any screenshots of a game that is played using the 8400M GS?

BTW my laptop will be 15.4".

you could probably find a better graphics card in a 15.4" . whats your budget and what were you looking at previously?

why is this a poll? lol...
the 8400gs will be able to handle half life 2 all settings high and may lag a little once AA is turned up. I'm not sure about bf2142 but i'm guessing 1024 res with medium-low settings will be good.

I can play it 1280X800 AA, High Settings, still get at lease 40 FPS. So if you call that barely, then yes your right.

I got that card with my HP, I haven't got my laptop yet, but I believe it can play Battlefield 2 very good.

Couldn't this question have been answered simply by reading the GPU Guide?
