All LCD monitors run at 60 Hz. There's nothing wrong with your setup

hey brkhobowriter. Thanks for all the info on that graphics card.

I'm looking to buy a laptop and i was thinking of getting exactly what you have. But i came across a problem when i couldn't find the exact same laptop as yours on dell.com. So, i was wondering where did you buy that laptop?

The inspiron 1520 on dell.com does not give me the option of choosing 8600M gt.

I OCed my 8600GT DDR2 to 620/1240/550 and its stable. Using 169.09 driver. Ran 3DMark06 with native reso of 1280x800 and got 4608 score. After reading around I'm surprised my memory clock could go higher than many people. Anyone managed to OC their 8600GT even higher and remain stable? Care to share the uberness with us? :)

I was gonna get a Dell with an 8400M GS, but people say that I oughta go for an 8600M GT, only because the 8600M GT will be a great GPU that will work very well with newer games for quite some time (1-2 years?)... I don't know if thats true, but I'd really hate to get that if that weren't true, as it would be MORE than enough for my other games, and only seem to have the purpose of boosting the graphics settings to med-high in Crysis, which seems stupid. So, is that stuff about the 8600M GT true or what? Will the 8400M GS not work well with future games???

The 8600M GT is adequate enough to play Oblivion with maxed out quality settings.

    The 8400 is not.

That seals the deal for me.

    I am running 174.16 drivers, 8600m GT DDR2, T7100 (1.8ghz), 1gb ram and Win XP Home SP2 and I get a bencmark of 3600(exact ran it 5 times).

Is it a good benchmark? also how much would upping ram to 4 GB raise that score.

    (vostro 1500)

    Thanks

Not bad, and raising Ram to 4 GB would impact it by 10-25 points. Not much, but you will get a performance boost. Try overclocking with the guide in my signature. I got a 25% boost by doing that.

32-bit OS cannot address 4GB of RAM. You will need a 64-bit OS.

question: In need for speed prostreet ( V1.1) around the cars I get pixels with random colors just a one pixel border (almost not complete border) moves as I move, antialiasing 8X, bilinear 1400X900, and no matter how much i change settings it wont go. Is it artifacting?

I take it thats vanilla Crysis you are running? Have you had any more joy with a modded ini file and mods applied at all?

I've got some better benchmarks OC'ing my laptop.

    Check it out:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=229687

Btw, something strange happened... I runned the 3d mark tes for hours, I've played a lot of games while OC'ing... and my lappy has runned pretty stable... until I played BF2... dunno why but it's ALWAYS crashes when I try to play it under ANY OC... doesnt matter which clock speed I set... It's gonna crash for sure! DAmn Battlefield 2!

Even playing Crysis for like 3~4 hours it hasn't crashed... just can't figure out why this is happening...

Dude, this is while you're running a Macbook Pro?? How did you able to get all the Windows XP drivers working on the notebook?

I am considering getting a Macbook Pro because I need to develop an iPhone application, but I still need Windows XP for other stuff. Thinking of doing Boot Camp but heard it's a b!tch getting the WinXP drivers (network, wireless, video).

Unfortunately an overclocked GPU conflicts with Punkbuster security for Battlefield 2, causing the game to crash. Hers a thread which explains this situation:

all you do is after you boot into windows from installing just put in the Leopard Disc 1 that comes with the computer, and it installs boot camp drivers. Video card use laptopvideo2go and modified inf ... everything has worked without a hitch here

I use a zalman nc1000 cooler temps while gaming are typically 77-80c (GPU). My MBP is a Merom version, the penryn MBP's are said to run cooler.. keep in mind also ntune allows you to switch between overclock and factory settings, at idle im around 55-59c. I use everest to monitor temps.. so far heat really hasnt been an issue for me.

Just wondoring about my score ... DDR2 8600m GT... I get 4111 mark06 with 550/475 thinking of pushing it more... would you say its pretty good score? and why are my temps far cooler with the OC... running no more then 72 with OC when hitting easily over 75 without OC..

    That's a very good score for a DDR2 model. I'm guessing you are running it on 1280 x 800.

I get a 4600 score with 174.74 drivers/1280x800 and an OC of 650/500. Temps max at around 75-78c. Im pretty sure the core clock could be bumped up a little more but the memory can't go above 500 or it'll crash.

new owner here. my specs are in my sig. 2nd day actually of ownership and am quite impressed with this rig. spend most of my time gaming on my home built pc and could not pass up this deal so i found this place and as usual it is filled with knowlegable folks sharing good info with each other.

this is my first laptop and after reading all postings on this thread i can see i made a very good choice. going to download cpuz and rivatuner and memtest and see what i can see !!

    oops no sig ? dell 1520 c2d 7500 2.2ghz, 256 8800mGT, 2x1 gig ddr2 667 ram, 250 gig hd, matte black cover!

Figured I'd throw my hat into the ring. From my experience with overclocking the DDR2 model, the memory clock is clearly the bottleneck. All this is with 174.16 driver. All settings default unless otherwise specified.

    Stock: 3356
    600/500: 4128
    615/525: 4291
    615/525 @ 1280x800: 4797

So far the highest temp I've hit at 600/600 is 67C, usually peaks at 65-66C. I haven't spent much time on 615/525 yet but I don't expect it to go any higher than 72C. I think I can push the memory a little further, core can go higher too but it starts heating up a lot more with negligible performance. Upping the memory clock adds less heat per performance gained.

just take a look at the other OC/Benchmark threads - for example:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=197545&page=7

So basically you can add another 500-600 points to your results with the gddr3 version.

Whats your FPS in Command and Conquer 3 while theres big fights going on?
And by max settings, did you enable anti-aliasing?

Im getting 50-60fps in multiplayer in COD4 with extra high textures, shadows disabled

But for Command and Conquer 3 I get 14-18 fps during big fights using close to ultra high settings, shadows disabled.

    Is that wierd or what.

Hi all- Just another newbie with a 1530 fresh out of the box here.... I haven't touched a thing on this system other than downloading the free 3dmark06.

    Here are my results;
    My system: 4699
    sm 2.0 1886
    sm 3.0 1790
    cpu 2159

    system is as follows;
    Core 2 duo T8300
    2.4GHz/800MHzFSB 3m L2 cache
    3GB DDR2 667MHZ
    256MB Nvidia 8600m GT
    160GB 7200RPM SATA

funny thing is 3dmark online* didn't see my system as a core 2 duo only as on the Nvidia was listed as an 8600m gs...

*it was ok on my system
