It depends on which gs and which gt. If it's the difference between a 9600 GS with GDDR2 and a 9600 GT with GDDR3 then the GT would be way faster than the GS. However, if it was a 9600 GS with GDDR3 and a 9600 GT with GDDR2, the GT would still be better but not by much. In the end you should probably go with the GT unless the GS is way cheaper.

Hm...how can you tell if it's the GDDR2 or 3? Is the 1GB 9600M GS 2 or 3 (from this Asus)?

Don't fall for the trap of buying a graphics card like the 9600m with 1 GB of memory on it. The GPU is only 128-bit and can really only handle 256mb, maybe 512mb ... but getting 1 GB will make no difference and is kind of a waste of your money. For graphics cards, always take memory speed over memory size, you will be much better off.
