I am about to buy a Dell XPS 15 laptop and this is the final piece of the puzzle that I have yet to figure out. This will be a multimedia laptop and not so much for gaming. It seems both cards have the following identical stats:

    CUDA Cores = 96
    Memory Clock = 900 MHz
    DDR3 config.
Memory Interface Widths = 128 bit
    Memory Bandwidth = 28.8 GB/s

    These are the differences:

The 525m has a 1200 MHz processor clock, 9.6 billion/second texture fill rate and a 600 MHz core clock.

The 540m has a 1344 MHz processor clock, 10.8 billion/second texture fill rate and a 672 MHz core clock.

For all practical purposes they appear to be the same card, but the 540m is a $100 "upgrade." Is the 540m worth the extra $100 or is this just some clever marketing with a marginally better GPU?

The real question is, would you ever notice a difference while watching a Blu-ray on the 15.6" B+RGLED screen while sitting at your desk?

Both GPUs will perform identically if you're just watching Blu-Ray movies on it. The 540M is faster but to me, isn't worth the $100 premium. As you have said, they both are based off the same GPU but differing in clock speed. The GT 525M can be overclocked to match and exceed the 540M easily. I had a M645 with the GT 525M that can hit 730 MHz on the core without a sweat.
