I just checked, and there are a ton of benchmarks on this new GPU!
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M - Notebookcheck
Test: Nvidia Geforce GTX 460M - DirectX 11 für Notebooks im Test | Grafikkarten | Tests | Hardware | GameStar.de
If these can be trusted, then it seems the GTX 460m really doesn't look bad next to the 5870, even besting it in a couple of games!
JUST REALIZED: Notebookcheck ran these tests on a pre-sample Qosmio with i7-740qm!!! THE NEXT QOSMIO IS GETTING THE GTX 460M!!! YEAH!!!
-
Yeah it looks like the 460m is going to end up in a lot of new machines coming soon...
5870m is still taking the lead by the looks of things so im sure there are many who are happy about that...
I have had too many 5870m notebooks as of recent though and the 460m is looking interesting even if a abit(or quite abit) slower ... -
Well, Notebookcheck did say it was better than the 5850. With improved drivers, I'm sure the performance will go higher. The 470m might be the answer to the 5870. Of course, the 6000 series may beat it. Then Nvidia will release the 500 series. And on and on and on...
But it's good enough for me. I've been waiting for a DX11 18.4" Qosmio for a while now, and it looks like the Qosmio is going to be one of the first to have it. Besides, how much power does one really need? Past a certain point, comparing framerates only serves to inflate egos... -
The G73JW will be launching VERY soon with the 460m ... Not sure the Qosimio will hit before it since the Asus is in the next week or two ... I believe some companies are going to launch the 460m machines sooner then people thought .

Cant expect the 460 to compete with the 5870 the 5850 would be the comparable card I think and the 480 is the one to go head 2 head with the 5870.
Of course this is in desktop land not notebook land so I guess things may be a bit different. From what I have read and seen though the 480 is much more expensive and using more power/heat so even when it matches or slightly beats the 5870 in performance the other factors average it out to be a less desirable card.
In the Asus market with the G73 series looks like the 460 and 5870 are actually priced about the same, to compensate for the slightly slower video card they upped the hdd quality and added a feature or two on the model that comes with the Nvidia 460 -
Notebookcheck's benchmarks only show a 10%< difference with the 5870 if you don't count the Crysis Ultra benchmarks. I'm fairly certain the 470m will best the 5870.
The G73JW is NOT coming next week. Soonest is end of Sept/beginning of Oct. -
Ehhh... the 480 just barely beats out the 5870m, and ATI's due for their next generation pretty dang soon here. They always trade back and forth on top performing cards, but it's amazing to me that Nvidia has such a minimal lead over ATI currently, especially considering that they need a non-trivial amount more power to do so, and only being significantly faster than ATI in DX11 games.
-
Notebookcheck says the TDP of the 460m is on the level of the 5850/5870, about 72W.
People should not compare this to the 480m, that was a hurriedly rushed out beast with a completely different architecture. -
...
-
Lol, obviously there are already some models out there...
Still, with Toshiba we at least won't have to worry about having serious problems that persist until the next money-grabbing model comes along. -
...
Yeah having owned the G73 i cant say it has the cleanest track record lol...
Maybe they got it right with the JW though... We shall see. -
They certainly have no more excuses.
I really hope Toshiba doesn't raise the prices for the new Qosmios. The Q885 debuted at $1999.99 and dropped below $999. This is also a great opportunity for Toshiba to really eat into Asus' market and attract people who refuse to pay $1600+ to play "Notebook Roulette". -
Its sad they jacked up the prices on the G73s and now dont offer a model with no BD drive...
At $1549.00 the G73 was a good priced machine with some nice features but now at $1745.00 its not looking like the same good value it once was ...
I have seen the Qosimos in person a few times and over all it looks pretty nice except the screens always looked rather dim IMHO and im a stickler for a good screen ... Having had the M17x's with RGB LED its hard to compare those to other notebook screens but i always enjoyed the G73 screen overall..
Hopefully these companies dont go hog wild on the pricing since they are adding the newest Nvidia cards but i wont be surprised one bit if it happens ...
Either way good luck with what ever you chose and i think the 460m is still a good choice over the 5870 regardless of what some people may think ... -
While some see a huge improvement in the Green camp, to me it looks like an epic fail, hehe. Kinda latish and lamish retaliation a split second before the knock-out
Reds?! Please don't smoke too much weed before BlackComb arrives -
...
I dont honestly see anything amazing about it but hey its something new...
Worrying about Blackcomb now is just crazy though because lets face it we need to see the Desktop cards hit first before we start worrying about the Notebook ones ... -
New article posted on AnandTech on 400M
Haven't kept up much with nVidia stuff since the switch from 9xxx to 1xx. What happened to GTS and will there be cards like GT460M or GTX 445M? -
5870 beats 460M in 3DMark that's for sure since both 3DMark06 and Vantage does not run in DX11 mode.
-
There's also the GTX 470M that will be due out very soon. That card in SLi should be the one that beats the 5870m xfire and OC's up to 480M speeds and beyond.

460m and 5870m-5850m are all very similar. Between these cards it best to choose depending on the other components you want and the price of the laptop itself. With the 480m I was expecting a laptop card that was out of the desktop 5770 performance range, however it did not happen. I believe this is will happen in a few years time

Go the green jersey people!

lol to be frank . ATI drivers will improve by 11.0 and 5870M should be better at tesellation hopefully.

460M game benchmarks from NotebookCheck are rubbish. Barely know how they did it or what settings. Example it has Crysis with 50+ FPS on High? What does that even mean? I get 34 FPS on the HD5870M @ 1080p all high settings. BTW Nvidia's Crysis @ 1080p high benchmark release for 480M was like 29 FPS I believe. That's how rubbish those game benchmarks are.
The only good benchmark I see is Vantage.
460M = 6,700
HD5870M Stock = 8,300
The HD5870M OC = 9,100.
HD5870M stock about 20% faster. The HD5870M overclocked around 30% faster. As I had predicted.
Face the truth, the Tessellation on the 460M won't be good enough for gaming @ 1080p. So the Vantage benchmark for DX 10.1 is very relevant and more useful than Heaven benchmark.
And price wise, IMO the 460M compares to HD5870M which has pricetag of $350.
So in the end for budget price and excellent performance, the HD5870M simply cannot be beat. -
Lol my current vantage is over 9500 with 840/1050 clocks, and I use those clocks for gaming as my temps are 80C max temp haha.
I love my cooling solution
So yeah, 460m is nothing next to me
It's still a VERY nice upgrade from 260m. If it were out right now, I would probably consider it. -
@ziddy123, Your post is what's rubbish. You can easily see the settings Notebookcheck used by hovering the mouse over the test setting. For example, the Crysis High benchmark was run at 1024x768 AF AA, same as Notebookcheck always does it.
Vantage has no DX11 support. Let me guess, you benchmarked all DX10 GPUs with DX9 programs?
And if the Tessellation on the 460m isn't good enough, then you're simply admitting that the DX11 support of the 5870 was rubbish to begin with. The gaming difference between the 460m and 5870 is small enough that future drivers could close the gap.
And finally, are you listening, The 460m contends with the 5850, not 5870. The 470m will compete directly with the 5870 and looks to easily beat it. Though I'm sure by then you'll have more hot gas and unsourced price points to pull out of your rear end. -
But please you go have fun with your barely faster tessellation on the 460M. Nvidia's numbers on HD5870M tessellation I can tell is wrong as most G73 users will score higher than 600. And YES I do not think the HD5870M, 460M or GTX 480M are worthy enough for proper DX11 Tessellation.
And I don't really care what Nvidia decides to contend with. Fact of the matter is, the HD5870M is $350 and likely cheaper than a GTX 460M still.
Unlike Nvidia, I base on what is contender by price and value. The GTX 460M can't match the performance of the HD5870M, too bad, maybe Nvidia should stop overcharging then. Not my problem, it's theirs.
Just as my post was rubbish to you, your post is even more rubbish to me. -
He is comparing them by price, because you know, that's how you put the tiers. Not because nvidia said the 470/480 would compete vs the HD5870, not because they are both companie's high end offering. It's according to their price. The HD5870 does compete vs the 460m because that's where the price matches. So you want higher performance? Then the 470m or 480m will be for you. Altho "higher performance" is close to nothing compared to the price you have to pay.
Anyways, with offerings like the MSI GX660R where you can run the GPU heavily overclocked at under stock temps of competition.... there is no point in getting else right now.
Anyways, back on track, the 460m is still a nice GPU upgrade from 260m found in the Asus notebooks. It offers 285m performance in DX10/9 while adding DX11. 1920x1080 might be too much of a resolution right now (even for Hd5870) but for 1600x900 it should be perfect. -
-
So it looks like 460M costs ~100$ more than MR5870...
480M-940$, 470M~600?$, 460M~450$, MR5870-350$ -> LMAO
-
-
Also, you have to remember that the JW will have USB 3.0, maybe a 120hz screen, etc....
-
-
-
There's a difference of 100-150$, you'll see it when the cards become available @RJ.
-
-
I think the whole 460m vs 5870 debate has gotten a bit too heated...if you think about it, by the time the 460m can't handle the new games, the 5870 won't be far from the trashbin either. -
To Asus, the RAM of the G73JW does not cost the same as what the resellers configure it. -

Its up for sale: ASUS G73JW-A1 17.3" Quad Core i7/8GB/1000GB/Blu-Ray G73 - eBay (item 160476395132 end time Oct-02-10 18:25:15 PDT)

I think the GPU is the main reason for a price jump.
The almost 2-year old Clevo D900F costs about 2.2-2.4k (the most basic config). What do you think will be the price of a x7200 (totally redesigned, with extra ports, better screen, GPU, etc)? Exactly, very close to the former if equipped with comparable GPU. AW M17X-R1 with the same GPU's and older C2D/C2Q CPU's was more expensive than the R2 version, with i7's, RGB LED, same chassis.
My 2 cents of course but the tendency is to lower not boost the retail price on every refresh. Otherwise we wouldn't be able to afford one today. -
ASUS G73JW-A1 - XOTIC PC - ROG Gaming Laptop -
RAM barely (if at all) factors into the price difference - it costs asus literally dimes to have 1333mhz instead of 1066. In fact, due to overwhelming demand when they were in mass production, a TON of g73jh's got 1333mhz ram for free when they were "supposed" to come equipped with 1066, likely because asus ran out of 1066. Mine is one, I'd wager it's probably between 20-40% of them have 1333. As for the 740, it's technically the same chip as the 720 and really didn't cost anybody anything more to produce than the 720 did.
Veering slightly more back on topic, when has there EVER been a laptop with a cheaper, comparable class NV gpu installed? Yeah. Hell, xotic still sells some of their sagers with a 5870 and an option of "upgrading" to a gtx 280 for ~$80.
I sort of feel disappointed by the entire 4xx lineup, at least with their G92 cores there was marked performance increases every time. Right now it feels like they have amdti within a good reach, but then 6xxx is already around the corner and cat&mouse starts all over again, with the mouse (amd) having a hefty headstart. -
That's how it's always been. AMD's a bit ahead of Nvidia right now, but Intel is creaming them on the CPU side. Then after a few years, everyone will switch roles and Nvidia will rule on graphics while Intel plays catchup to AMD. And so on and so forth....
But I'm content. A decent GPU is finally getting into my laptop of choice. The 460M may not have almighty power, but it's certainly no slouch, and by the time it dies of obsolescence, so will the 5870, and maybe even the 6xxx's. Technology is always improving... -
I think the Asus G73-JW may be the first G73 that's worth buying. The one equipped with the 5870 is pure junk. The GSOD'ing even after their new vbios and lack of Catalyst compatibility is all you need to know about AMD. Even if the new nVidia equipped machines cost a bit more, at least you won't have GSOD on your hands and will actually be able to use your system.

Impressive, now the price has to be right
