Hey guys, I just need to get some opinions here. I currently have an Asus G50VT-X1 with Nvidia GeForce 9800 GS w/512 MB RAM of DDR3 and am looking to buy another laptop with Nvidia GeForce GT 130M w/1028 MB RAM of DDR3. I really like all the features of this new laptop that I'm thinking about buying but I'd like to make sure that it can keep pace with games that I play, Fallout3 for example. I know this card isn't as fast as the 9800, but can somebody tell me if they have one and how well it plays games. I'm hoping the extra 512 MB of RAM with compensate for a little bit for the slower GPU. any thoughts?

Well, the 9800M GS is a good 50% stronger, so you will experience reduced settings and resolutions. It is quite a step back in memory bandwidth and stream processors.
If gaming is your main concern, don't take the step back. If you don't mind a slower machine for games.... then really consider if you need the new machine or not.
EDIT: Ah yeah, the extra 512MB won't do much in gaming, because they tend to be needed at higher resolutions, something that with the limited bandwidth of the 130M you won't really benefit at all, so they are rather useless. -
Nope VRAM isnt an asset in this case, and rarely is, that 130m is midrange, the 9800m GS is a high end card and is A LOT faster.
Your looking at mostly medium settings at best.
My 4870 performs better at 1920x1200 and above with 1gb vram compared to 512, but it is a much more powerful card, the extra memory is useful because of all the memory that is used up at that resolution. It basically just a marketing gimmick for lower-end cards. -
The amount of graphics memory rarely matters when gaming - it's the speed that provides the performance increase.
The extra 512MB of graphics memory will not make up the difference 32 additional shader units and a 256-bit memory bus have. -
So in other words, its not really cost effective for me to get the new laptop as I primarily use it for gaming
-
Since you primarily use it for gaming, your new laptop will be worse at gaming, but if the new computer is lighter and smaller and has a lower resolution screen, the loss of graphical precision might compensate for the loss of power.

Which one is better for Architecture?
-
GT130M will not even be able to fully ultilise that 512MB, let alone 1GB.

So why do you want to buy a new laptop then?
