Is the screen messed up all the way from boot up or only once in windows? Depending on the symptoms it could either be your drivers or bios or your GPU might be failing. Try booting in safe mode.

How old is your laptop and has it been pushed hard for gaming? The 86xxM series is known for its failures

I would try completely uninstalling VLC media player. Then download the latest version once more and re-install afresh. Looks like the codecs have become corrupted.

Also do you have the latest nvidia official driver 178.48 from their website. Remember to completely wipe all traces of the previous driver before installing.

Don't worry about that. If you take a glance you shall see you have 512mb of dedicated video memory.

Good luck with fixing your problem :)

When did the problems begin to occur? Maybe you could perform a system restore if you have a restore point. Tis an odd problem. You could try another player media player such as DivX.

I had that same problem before. What about resintalling but with a different version of VLC. Either latest or an old one.

tryed that, to no avail, also the drivers that are on hp and state that they are the current version but when i go to nvidia theres a totally different driver? ive tried them both but its really starting to annoy the hell out of me as i use my laptop to connect to my TV via HDMI and watch alot of web based TV, i even paid $29 for driver detective to see where i was going wrong but it just shows that my drivers are all up to date!

    Hey, try drivers from http://www.laptopvideo2go.com.

I have an 8600M GS card as well and I'm currently using Dox's 182.05 driver. It is working out pretty well for me!
