Yea so, my laptop has an nvidia geforce 9500m GS graphics card and when i try to use it to play UT3 and DMC 4 it lagggs really badly(playing offline).
I've tried overclocking my graphics card with riva tuner 2.09 but frankly i dont really see any difference. I'm currently using 169.04 driver. Should i change to another driver??? Also how do i know that the overclocked settings are actually being used???? Because i think it stays the same....
What are the recommended overclocking specs??
It really sucks cuz i can only play these 2 games smoothly in windowed mode.
What should i do inorder to be able to play these 2 games (and some others in the future?)

Use 177.79 from laptopvideo2go.com. Your video driver is way too old.
-J.B. -
update drivers and don't overclock. it has to be ur drivers as my friend has a identical card and his laptop plays it very well.
-
odd I'm using stock drivers and DMC4 runs very well I get 35-40 FPS.
-
-
i had the same problem even if i was playing NFS Most Wanted at low settings(i know you won't believe it) then i installed 177.79 and every thing runs smooth even at settings max..
so i say just give it a try......

u know, i own 9500m gs too and wish i hadn't choose one. it's very very lame. man, i want ps3...
-
-
I'm reporting back after trying out driver 177.79. I'm happy to say that DMC4 and UT3 works pretty good! Although both have to be at lowest settings and sometimes UT3 still lags a bit here and there, but at least no windowed mode! lol. anything else to make it run smoother ?
-
Silly question, but are you on power saver?
-
I don't think this card should have to be run at the lowest settings regardless of the driver. Something sounds amiss to me. What's the temps on your cpu and gpu?
-
...no..lol
-
but i heard u have to go through bios right
. Actually, ure right i think something's amiss too cause like i said a couple of weeks ago when i was playing COD4 it just started to get very laggy......
-
Temp seems fine and i'm not real sure where to tell you to look next. If some program (printer spools are famous for it) isn't sapping up the cpu I would venture to say you need to possibly get the thing looked at. Something sounds wrong with the GPU. Do other programs that may be more CPU intensive lag as well or just games?
-
have you tried turning off aero and switch to basic of classic. i know i have the nvidia 7150 and even unreal arena lagd really bad until i turnd off aero and switch to basic or even classic.
-
=( i dont want to turn off aero lol, it looks so cool.
-
The only thing that makes it lag so much are games. especially UT3.
Btw what's the best setting to change in the nvidia control panel for best performance? Should i turn v sync off?? can u tell me which settings are best?
I'm not prioritizing graphics but more on performance -
this is a list of programs i have on my com, should i delete any that are unnecessary?
-
Chage it to the let the 3d application decide setting in the nvidia control pannel.
Make sure your plugged into your ac adapter while playing,
try changing power management to high performance or off.
What are the rest of your specs?? -

Try using rivatuner to monitor your core/shader/memory clocks. This is just to make sure that they are what they are supposed to be at. I had a problem with one driver where it would set my clocks at idle (275/550/200) instead of (475/950/400) which, as you can imagine, caused bad gaming performance.
I also attached the trial benchmark for my 9500m GS.Attached Files:

I play on my 8600mGT just fine at 1920x1200 res med-high settings. Even my 3200 tablet plays it at 1280x800 at low-medium just fine.
-
measure your gpu temperature using rivatuner monitor during gaming. It could be powermizer downclocking gfx speeds after reaching a certain temperature. So you should try disabling powermizer to see if that'll help. Theres a good guide on this forum, look for it.

Download hwmonitor from cpuid.com and it will tell you the current, min and max temp reached while it's running.

i'm having the same problem.
Core 2 duo 2.0Ghz
16" HD Acer CineCrystal LCD
GeForce 9500M GS (driver 175.61 I think)
4GB DDR2
320GB HDD
Vista 64x
From what I read while searching the internet is that the graphic card gets too high and goes in 2d mode. Someone said (sorry for not having sources) that nvidia blocked graphics card at 65° because they were having overheating issues.
I've done a test with riva tuner and theres the result of what changed after the "crash":
(Before/After)
Core clock ROP domain: 513/297
Core clock shader domain: 1026/594
Memory clock: 400/200
Core temp: 66 or 67/ 62 or 61
Also, speedfan mark the temp1 maximum temp as 57. I don't know what is this indicator but I guess it's the graphic card one since it dropped fast after shuting the game. -
Shutting down powermizer doesn't work. Someone know the last driver that still make the blu-ray player work? Also, a searched on this forum and another explication would be that the processor temp gets too hot and sends less data to the graphic card. Then the graphic card lower it's clock speed because it doesn't need to be at max if less info comes in. Forgot to check prossessor temp at last test.
-
First, the 9500M indeed has a temperature threshold, that when is passed, the GPU automatically downclocks itself to 169mhz core, 100mhz memory or something around that.
Max temp that my 9500GS can take is 85C so I will asume most 9500 should reach that temp at the most. Going over 85C causes the glitch of FPS to go down. This limit can be very different depending on the laptop.
With my 9500M I play UT3 at 1280x800 at highest settings at around 28fps average.
Turning powermizer off does not get rid of the problem at all. So I did a very quick solution meanwhile: downclocking. Instead of the normal 475/950/400, I went to 460/920/390 and my temps get as high as 82C now. I never reach the threshold and I don't get any super downclocking issue.
So, try downclocking a little. and DO NOT DISABLE POWERMIZER, it helps keep your laptop temps very cool. I went from 70 idle GPU to 60GPU with powermizer. overall CPU and HDD temps decreased as well 2-4C.
What are the frames per second you are experiencing with those games? Also, I asume your laptop is an Asus F8? being a 14.1 inch with a 9500M im sure it would get rather hot during gameplay.
Download HWMonitor, and keep it open while you use the laptop and play games. It will show you the min and max temps you reach.
Right now Nvidia has a lot of defective GPU units, and i am not sure if this is par of the defects, or a "remedy" at any rate, it is shameful that a solution to this problem is loosing performance by downclocking. -
I will try that thanks. And no, I have an ace inspiron 6920G, 16 inch. I tought I had it in my sig
-
So I tried reactivating powermizer and downclocking it to what you said and it still overheat. But my threshold seems to be at 70°C and idle at 50-55 (43 after leaving it all day running when I was absent). What is your driver? Also, does the WHQL modded one from laptopvideo2go disable the ability to play blue-ray disk? I have vista x64 and I think that having non-WHQL driver disable the blue-rays.
-
btw i am thinking of buying that same acer laptop but the 18.4 inch version, what are your thoughts and how does it handle games like Bioshock and orange box?
-
Depends on what's inside, but I heard it run these well
-
After another test, I managed to get as high as 66 on my graphic card and it only crashed 3 minute after the last 66 spike at 65°C and my cpu at 52 when I get a spike at 55°C 6 minutes earlier. It makes me think it's not only temperature based. Also, the clock speed goes at standart 2D performance, like I suspected before.
-
Yep, thats definate hardware downclocking occuring below normal downclocking threashholds. Sorry to tell you but it sounds like you might have a really defective gpu. Is there a possibility that you can exchange your laptop on warranty?
If not theres one more option you can try out and thats cpu downclocking and undervolting. Since the temperature regenerated by your cpu affects your gpu temps as well, downclocking cpu will alleviate pressure. Ive tried it b4 when attempting to overclock my 8600m gt and it worked great.
Theres a guide in my sig: overclocking the 8600mgt and theres a section about it.
At but not least, have you tried a laptop cooler? Might think about purchasing one and theres a nice guide over@ accessories. -
undervolting sure did lower my temp but it didn't same me from crashing again. And in case someone brings this point, crashing doesn't lower my cpu speed. I'll try downclocking a bit more my gpu. Can I use any number or is there a ratio or something I shouldtake care of?
-
9500M GS is hot. Mine throttles at exactly 97C. We need to enable fan thresholds with Nibitor, but the GPU is not supported yet. Talk to them about it.
-
If your at 97C that's a great cause for concern! 97C will do great harm to you gpu!
-
maybe it is 97 in your asus, but now mine never got above 70. Or the temp sensor is wrong, which wouldn't suprise me since the cpu one was wrong(I already showed I got belo 0°C ^^ ). And for nibitor, send them your bios, they need it to work.
-
yeah mine never goes past 60C so yeah you might want to get your laptop checked out.
