Hi all, new here, been browsing the web for an answer to this question and haven't really found anything definitave. This site seems the best bet on getting an answer. I hope that yall can help.
Here we go.
System is a pretty bog standard Dell Inspiron 8200 (3 years old)
It came with an ATI Mobility 9000 (64MB)
The video card died and I can replace it with an Nvidia GeForce Go 4400 (64MB)
My question is, am I loosing out on this replacement, or should I ebay harder to try and find the original card?
The GeForce is coming free, but price is not an issue, as I'm not getting a new system for some time.
Is there much of a difference between the cards performance wise, bearing in mind I am pushing these cards already (not OC'ed) playing games on them.
Thanks in Advance.
Daniel

There is no such thing as a Go4400 . . there's the 440 Go, do you mean that?
The 440 Go is a terrible card, the 9000 is superior by a good amount. However, both cards are at the bottom of the barrel for performance.
The 9000 is better because it supports pixel shaders, whereas the 440 Go does not. -
Thanks for the reply ChazMan.
Its Dell doing the replacing, they have advised that they no longer have the M9000 in stock and they are going to put in the 4400 (Im going to assume that they mean 440, unless theres a specific Dell 4400?) as its the only one that they have in stock that fits the Inspiron 8200 chassis.
To make a long story short.
Within warranty a faulty fan was replaced by Dell, the engineer didnt use any anti-static precautions. After he left I tested the laptop to see if it was booting, which it did.
I put it away and didnt use it for about a month and a half. I then tried to use it and after 30 mins it began to display graphics artifacts. I tried diagnosing the issue myself and as it was happening in the BIOS too, I knew it was hardware related.
I called Dell and they diagnosed a hardware fault, and pulled the its out of warranty (and it was by 3 weeks) we cant do anything. I argued that it was damaged by their engineer and they eventually agreed to warranty service it.
I got a call yesterday to say that they didnt have the M9000 in stock, and are going to put in the Go 4400.
Their logic being that they are both 64mb so its not a downgrade.
Ive told them that I consider this a downgrade and Im not happy with this. They've said that they will note this and get back to me today.
I remember the option of getting the Geforce at time of purchace and the ATI was more expensive, so I went for that.
They cant downgrade what I have purchaced, can they ? -

Well, there's no such thing as the 4400 . . there's the 4200 Go, but that was never offered in the Dell 8200, only the 8500, which was a later model.
Well, it's good that it's a 64MB card, but performance is not going to be as good, plus you won't get any special effects in games . . . the MR9000 was DX8.1, the 440 Go is DX7.
To your last question - I'd argue that point as well. You should have replaced what you paid for. Let me know how you make out.

Giving this a bump and to add some news.
They have still got the laptop, and no suitable replacement video card.
They have offered to replace the laptop completely.
I will update with the details as we go on. -
what model laptop are they upgrading you too?
sounds like a good deal..

Very nice of them. You'll be getting a better machine than what you have (maybe), but hope it doesn't have integrated graphics. That will be slower than a MR9000 in games.

What can I say.. I love Dell
They sent me an Inspiron 6400
Centrino Duo 1.8
512MB DDR2 (533)
256MB ATI Radeon X1400
I am completely over the moon. But now comes the memory upgrade. I just cant live with 512
Thanks again for all your help. -

Daniel I want to felicate you with this deal! It is just INCREDIBLE. It is even Dore Cuo! And being a 512 DDR2 is even better in my opinion, you can easily upgrade it to 2 GB if you want so!
Then you have a real laptop for VISTA!
Congrats again,

Hehe, congrats! One of the things I like about Dell, they can afford to make customers happy.
