Well, I'm thinking about buying an hp dv5000 with the 7400, with the 2.00ghz Core Duo, and a 1 gig of ram. What should I expect? Basically all I'm going to be doing is play HL2, CS, and Garry's Mod.

Can I run the setting on high?

    Can I use Anti-Aliasing?

If this laptop doesn't meet the requirement, I'm not buying it.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    1) What is your budget? - $0-$1600

    2) What size notebook would you prefer? Doesn't matter

    a. Ultraportable; 12" screen or less
    b. Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen
    c. Mainstream; 15" - 16" screen
    d. Desktop Replacement; 17"+ screen

    3) What tasks will you be performing with the notebook? Photoshop cs2 (heavily), Dreamweaver, Maya, Flash, Blender

    4) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places or leaving it on your desk? I'll rarely take it places, but if I do need to take it somewhere, I don't care how heavy it is.

    5) Will you be playing games on it; if so, which games? Half Life 2, Garrys Mod, CounterStrike, Basically source stuff.

    6) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like? Meh, The last 2 Dell's that I had sucked, but I can get an employee discount on them, I do like the HP Dv5000 series.

    7) How many hours of battery life do you need? About 2-5, if I'm using the battery.

    8) Do you mind buying online without seeing the notebook in person? Yes, I would like to buy it in a retail store.

    9) Please select your country's flag as a post icon and tell us what country are you buying this in? United States.

    Screen Specifics

    10) Would you prefer standard or widescreen? Widescreen

    11) From the choices below, what screen resolutions would you prefer?

    Widescreen
    d. WXGA or WXGA+ - 1280x768/800 or 1440x900; Wider viewing version of XGA, good for movie viewing or spreadsheets.
    e. WSXGA+ - 1680x1050; Wider viewing version of SXGA, good for movie viewing or spreadsheets.
    f. WUXGA - 1920x1200; Wider viewing version of UXGA, good for movie viewing or spreadsheets.

    12) Do you want a glossy/reflective screen or a matte/non-glossy screen? Don't Care

    Build Quality and Design

    13) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you? Kinda

    14) When are you buying this laptop and how long do you want this laptop to last? My laptops usually last a year, so lets make this one last for 3

    Notebook Components

    15) How much hard drive space do you want; 40GB to 120GB? 80gb

    16) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD-ROM, DVD-CD/RW or DVD-RW drive? The HP I'm looking at has Lightscribe.

HL2/CS:S should run very well, but you should probably complete our FAQ in the What should I Buy forum so we can give you a better recommendation . .much more powerful cards can be had depending on your budget.

it can run on high with 2x antialiasing without a hiccup (i have a dv8000 but with the same video card) antialiasing affects the performance the most though, so if you want more, it costs ya

I can run The Lost Coast @ 1280x800, all settings high, reflect world, HRD, color correction, Vsync, 2x AA, and 16x AF. All that at about 40FPS. You will have absolutly no problem running any Half Life games with a 7400.

what about on the go7300? Are the two card that different? I have a core duo 1.67GHz and 1 GB RAM. Is running it on high that demanding?

I'd suggest looking at an Acer 5672 if you can get the updated version with the 128MB X1600.

Are you restricted to retail stores or would it be possible to buy online? You can get the Asus S96J online, great notebook.
