6490 should be slightly faster than the GT520m about 7-15% faster.

I would say more than that, it should be noticeably faster, specially since it can run like an underclocked gt 330m, correct me if Im wrong

Right the 6490 does run sort of like an underclocked 330m. I don't get why nvidia reduced the shaders from the 420m to the 520m that is what killed that card.

I went from the reviews on the mbp 15, thats why I said that, the 6400 series is a new chip and quite an improvement regarding the latter 5400 series

Because the 540M is the 420M/425M/435M (same chip, different binning) rebranded?

the 420m aint in the same family.

but yes the rebranding goes a little bit far:

    425m/ 435m/ 525m/ 540m/ 550m/ and some chips are 555m (they are equipped with GDDR5 though)

in this issue ati is better
    AMD Radeon HD 6490M - Notebookcheck.net Tech
520 is not a good choise for gaming, also remember 520 have two different type 520M and 520MX so in the same link you can see any graphic card and you can check, pipeline and core clock
and if you can find with 525M or 540M will be better
