They may have just forget. its the same arch on mobile and desktop, I doubt there is huge efforts required.

No need to modify anything, it just worked ok with my GTX 970m, straight out-of-box (Windows 8.1).
BTW here is a full list of Vulkan conformant GPUs, straight from Khronos:

These are GPUs which passed Vulkan conformance tests, so for all of these drivers must work. There is tons of them, many more than listed on that drivers page on Nvidia site.

i guess this is to replace my nVidia driver, or support it? Also, is there any improvement in performance with the 970M?

The Vulkan-enabled driver version is 356.39, so if you don't need Vulkan, you'll lose all the progress that happened from then till "normal" driver (latest stable driver version 361.91).
Main driver branch will also get Vulkan support eventually, so if you are not graphics developer, you may just wait.

As far as I'm aware, right now Vulkan performance isn't great, the first step was just to get out conformant drivers. Now that game developers got their hands on it, both they and Nvidia can start with more debugging and optimizations.
E.g. Talos Principle, the first game that released Vulkan rendering backend, gets today about 20-30% lower performance than their DirectX 11 rendering backend (which is already well optimized).

Vulkan doesn't matter right now unless you're a dev. It'll be at least a year or two before vulkan matters for consumers. We don't even have DX12 games yet and that's actually supported.

Gears of War Ultimate Edition is spec'd to use DX12 but it's release is still unknown. Quantum Break is out in April and is using DX12 and so that will be the first actual release in western markets. Games like Arma III will be updated to DX12 but they don't count as they were already released nor are they DX12 native.
so yeah looking to see how a DX12 game runs with laptop hardware -

I'm not saying it won't be viable and competitive at some point. That point will not be any time soon.
Edit: I do think one place where vulkan could be helpful is Android and Linux. The 96% of desktop gamers using Windows will be better served by DX for the foreseeable future.

what's the market share of games that use DX vs OpenGL/Vulkan?

This would make it bigger deal than just OpenGL 3-4 vs DirectX 9-11. Both developers and users want to use those hot new features without being tied to Windows 10.
Majority of the world still runs Windows 7. Outside of gaming niche, even Windows 8 and Windows XP are still much bigger than Windows 10.
See e.g. these recent Unity HW stats (these are more representative of normal people than Steam HW stats):

- Windows XP: 17.3%
- Windows 8.1: 8.6%
- Windows 10: 4.0%
- OSX El Capitan: 1.3%
- OSX Yosemite: 0.9%
- Windows 8: 0.8%
Also as Android future graphics will be eventually dominated by Vulkan (it'll have to, to be competitive vs iOS Metal), this should lower costs of keeping separate code paths for developers.
Most major engines have mobile versions, which mean Vulkan support will be everywhere too. This was kinda happening already with OpenGL ES3, but the difference now with Vulkan is just how much closer mobile graphics got to desktops.

Fun times ahead. I just hope Microsoft will not sabotage Vulkan. They kinda try to make DX12 + exclusive games the "carrot" that will help persuading people to switch to Windows 10 (Quantum Break is just beginning of that strategy). -

Vulkan has no chance... Unless Microsoft loses the console war and trashes DX12... Which I hate to say isn't going to happen. Microsoft messed up my Xbox One with Windows 10... The OS lags like nothing else... But games work better... By the time Khronos gets Vulkan ready for prime time, it will be relegated to Steam boxes.
