If that is true it will be a major problem for AMD. Although the price for 7970 is probably higher now due to no competition from Nvidia, I hardly doubt they can lower it $250 to match the price Nvidia is setting. Another problem is that if GTX 660 indeed is better or similar to 7970, then Nvidia will beat AMD in the hardcore department because GK110 etc with GTX 680, there will be no GPUs from AMD to match this performance because 680 is so far ahead.

I really hope this is true (but I have my doubts) because I would pick a Nvidia card in a heartbeat instead of AMD GPU due to stability and driver support with Nvidia GPUs. Plus I think Nvidia deserves to get back on the GPU throne after the disappointing Fermi architecture. But I think the price is a bit strange though, since Nvidia have never been cheap. Oh well, we will see :)

I doubt that would happen. Why would they make their new mid range card to out perform their old top end card? Remember they produce chip for profit not to break records and win nobel prize.

Every new gen have better performance. I don`t see the problem that GTX 660 will perform better than the 500-series, because Nvidia will shift toward the 600 series. The 400 series are not sold anymore right? If OEMs are stuck with some GPUs I am shure that Nvidia have some arrangements for them. Perhaps OEMs are aware months before so that they don`t order any more in wait for the new 600 series?

If Nvidia want to heat up the competition with cheap AMD GPUs that is fine by me. Competition is always good :)

AMD has Eyefinity, its vastly superior than the Nvidia multi monitor solution.

and the 7970 overclocks like a BEAST it beats the 6990 and thats a dual gpu die card.

I know I am a niche crowd but trust me once you play games w/ 3 monitors its a whole new level of gaming and a vastly different experience. Its worth paying for and worth taking a hit in performance if Nvidia is better than AMD this round.

I think it may be good for the market if tides change, AMD has really beat Nvidia for too long, if Nvidia does come back it simply means better competition and that means maybe a cheap 7990 :D

But I feel things are nothing more than rumors right now and we cant know what will happen till it happens as far as price and performance goes.

Unlocking was only possible with the old versions. Its no longer possible, so unless you're buying an old used card, unlocking is no longer an option.

There are a few 3rd party cards that are able to do it too.

That may be true from a technical perspective, but from a business perspective AMD is still held back by the DisplayPort requirement while Nvidia has an all-DVI/HDMI solution that at the same time promotes sales of more GPUs.

"SLI provides the power needed to drive 3 monitors" sounds a lot better than "You need to either replace your existing monitors or buy an expensive active adapter"

I'm disappointed that AMD still has not found a way around the DisplayPort requirement even after 3 generations of video cards - when the 5870 first launched I expected it to be a temporary limitation, but it seems that's not the case.

Seems like the latest word is that Charlie is packpedalling on his earlier claims.

I think all the speculation is to be taken with a pinch of salt as the new kepler is now rumored around 580 speeds with a $300 price tag and actually doesnt beat the 7970 but is a good performance to price GPU.

    I can :D

I actually liked how much people are complaining that AMD is going to cost more than nvidia as well, laugh myself so hard every time.

Then we move on how abysmal the performance of the 7970 is going to be compared to whatever nvidia is going to release.

And still there isnt the comment that this thread aint useful for notebooks, since the 7800 and the whatever nvidia is going to launch aint here, and wont be, until we are necroing this thread, to which I hope we wont

Since I farted, Im going to leave the room

7970 comes with adapters and no longer needs active adapters can use passive now which are really cheap.
