I'm thinking to by HP 8710p but I'm interested of gaming only.So is it good choice for gaming and is there any problems with any games running on that notebook? Of course I know that there is very powerfull gaming notebooks but for ~2000 $ I don't have any options except notebook with GF 8600 GT or ATI 2600.

I play WoW and played TF2 for awhile. Both games run great.
I have the 1.8gig model and updated to 3gig of ram (running XP).
I can play WoW or any steam game with a second monitor (my 19" widescreen 1440x900 to match the 8710) and have firefox/zune software/ventrilo/outlook open at the same time with no choking whatsoever. My WoW fps stays constant at around 60-80 except when doing 25man raids and it stays around 30. -

thank you so much for this forum (it helped me to pick 8710p yesterday & i adore it) and thank you twice for this thread (it helped to make my 8710p perform)
now let me contribute
i have laptopvideo2go driver, 178,13 modded as described to 8700gt
notebook specs are in my signature

I tried Crysis 800x600, all medium except for high shading, DX10.
Smooth but some weird outlines on some trees and bushes.
Also tried DX9 mode. If I raise resolution my 8710p starts to cough.
- I had exactly same thing with stock 8710p drivers. except that it wasn't smooth on this settings. it was awful
I guess it was poor DX10 compatibility of older drivers. afaik quadro is supposed to "ignore" DX10 cuz they are designed for different purposes
Now I have 17-25 FPS, 1st level, jungle & beach
screen res 1280x800
all settings med
the only issue I have (and it irritates me a bit, but only while in the menu) the cursor drawn like 4cm lower and 4 cm further to the left than the system thinks it is
maybe reinstallig crysis will fix it, but it doesn't irritate me that much
...hell, why play crysis set to med... i'd rather play farcry set to max
NFS MW has performance increase of 30% roughly, I didn't measure FPS...

I had 4255 3d marks 06
now I have 4693
can do better cuz all stock processes (u know, hp stuff) are running -

UPDATE. I swithched back to original drivers due to system overheating. The fan is always on, so I guess that's just the drivers. Notebookcheck gives 20W power consupmtion of nvs 320 & 29W consumption of 8700 GT. The HP cooler was not designed to work with that much heat, so... Either I get a cooling pad (not the best solution for portability) or I switch back to HP drivers. Whic I did.

So what is the difference between NVS 320 and 8700M? Only driver difference? If it is then what the point of NVS320 in the first place?

NVS 320 is a powerful card with low power consumption. It is "business class card". It's performance/consumption ratio is VERY good.
I modded my Quaddro NVS 320 to act as Geforce 8700GT, I have 20-30% performance boost, but my machine overheats. I do not recommend to mod the card on 8710p without additional cooling. Notebookcheck gives 20W consuption of 320 & 29W of 8700. 50% is a big difference you know.
The latest HP driver update was in march. Just google "HP 8710p drivers". Vista can automatically update them. Everything besides DX10 works great, so I will stick with stock drivers. -
I found the solution for this problem! At least in my case. This has been bugging me for a loooong time, and in my case it's a larger problem. I have an Alienware with 2 8700M GT cards. You can fool the driver into thinking it's a 8700GT, but you won't fool Nvidia Control Panel. And since both cards have to look the same to the control panel in order to work in SLI, I couldn't get it to work. What I had forgotten about is that I had updated the chipset driver for the motherboard quite a while ago (from Intel's site) and it suddenly dawned on me why it saw the 8700 as the Quadro card. The second card actually IS a quadro card, but with Alienware's chipset drivers, it sees it as an 8700M GT. I have been wondering why there are two different BIOS' on these cards and this must be why. Long story short, in my case, the motherboard chipset driver fixed the problem. Go to your laptop mfg site and update it (or revert, whichever way you want to go), and it should solve it. Good luck!
BTW, the BIOS' versions end in 51 and 52, in case you wanted to check yours. The 52 is the quadro I believe. -
I just got a a new 8710p and im planing to use it mostly for gaming and im thinking about changing my quadro drivers to 8700M.
So is it safe to do that? I mean do i risk getting any overheating or something?
thanks
